You can make a candle decorated with garden flowers, but treat it as an unlit display piece: dried flowers near a flame can ignite. For a candle you plan to burn, make a separate flower-free candle and keep botanicals out of and away from its wax pool and flame.
Can you put dried flowers in candles?
You can incorporate dried flowers into a candle for display, but do not light it. The National Candle Association (NCA) warns against flammable botanicals embedded near a candle flame. Its summary of tests on three reviewed commercial samples says two experienced secondary ignition; the most severe event ignited the entire wax surface within one hour of first lighting. Those results describe a small set of samples, not every candle, but they support a clear safety boundary: keep a candle decorated with flowers unlit.
The NCA does not validate a method for attaching flowers to the outside of a candle intended for burning. Pressing flowers flat, placing them at the side, or using a candle-making kit does not establish that a flower-decorated candle is safe to light.
Choose the project: display candle or burnable candle

How to make a flower-decorated candle for display
Use pressed or dried garden flowers as visual decoration for a candle that will remain unlit. The specific attachment method, adhesive, flower placement, and curing process are not established by the NCA guidance, so do not treat any particular technique as tested or safe for burning.

- Set the use before you begin. Decide that the finished candle is for display only, not for lighting.
- Arrange the flowers. Place the candle and flowers in a separate display arrangement, or decorate the candle as a craft object. Keep the whole arrangement away from any lit candle or other flame.
- Mark it clearly. Label the candle “display only—do not burn” and preserve that warning if you gift or package it.
How to make a candle you can burn
Make a conventional candle without flowers or other botanical decorations in or near the wax pool. A candle-making kit or separate wax, wick, and candle-safe vessel or mold can provide the relevant materials, but not every kit is suitable for every component combination. Follow the kit and component makers’ instructions rather than assuming a generic recipe will burn correctly.
Candle behavior depends on interacting components. The NCA identifies candle size and shape, wick, wax, fragrance, and dye as factors that affect burning. An untested combination should not be presented as guaranteed to burn safely or evenly.

How to burn a flower-free candle more safely
The NCA’s guidance begins with a simple reminder: “A lighted candle is an open flame.” Before lighting a flower-free candle:
- Trim the wick to 1/4 inch.
- Remove wick trimmings and other debris from the wax pool.
- Use a holder made for candle use.
- Keep the candle away from drafts and combustible materials.
- Never leave a lit candle unattended, and follow the maker’s instructions for burn time and care.
A calm, steady flame is a sign the candle may be burning in balance. Airflow can disturb a flame and cause flickering or visible smoke; an overly long wick or debris in the wax pool can contribute to flare-ups. These signs are useful to notice, but they do not diagnose every candle problem.
