You can make ash lumber look more like flatsawn oak with a pigment stain in a red-oak color. The change is visual only: ash remains ash, and stain will not create oak’s large wood rays or quarter-sawn ray fleck.
What staining ash can—and cannot—do
Ash has coarse, open grain that can resemble the pronounced grain of flatsawn oak. Pigment stain settles in the pores and can make that resemblance more noticeable. WOOD Magazine describes this approach in its July 14, 2017 article.
The match has limits. Oak’s large rays are a distinguishing feature, especially the fleck visible on quarter-sawn oak; staining ash does not reproduce that anatomy. The wood also keeps ash’s own structural and durability properties. Purdue University Extension notes that ash grain can look much like oak while lacking the large rays seen on oak’s quartered surface in its September 2007 ash guide.
How to stain ash for an oak-like color
- Choose a red-oak pigment stain. WOOD Magazine names Minwax red oak (#215) as an example. Its current availability and formulation are not established here, so check the product label and use a stain labeled for your project.
- Test on an offcut from the same board. Apply the stain using the product label’s directions, then let the sample dry as directed. Ash color varies: sapwood may be nearly white, while heartwood can range from grayish or light brown to pale yellow streaked with brown, according to the American Hardwood Information Center’s ash guide. A sample shows how the actual board responds; no exact match is guaranteed.
- Adjust the approach if needed. WOOD Magazine reports that ash pores absorb more pigment from liquid stain than oak pores do. For a darker result, it suggests sanding ash to 150-grit so the slightly rougher surface can retain more pigment. If you want less grain contrast, it suggests using dye instead of pigment stain.
- Finish the piece only after approving the sample. Follow the stain and topcoat manufacturers’ instructions for application and compatibility; the cited article does not establish one universal schedule for every product.
When stained ash is—and is not—a substitute for oak
Use the sample to judge color and grain for the specific board and lighting in the project. If the design depends on quarter-sawn ray fleck or a precise oak figure, choose actual oak rather than expecting stain to supply those features. For structural or durability decisions, compare the species against the project’s requirements rather than relying on appearance.

Purdue Extension reports that white ash at 12 percent moisture content weighs about 42 pounds per cubic foot and is comparable in strength to white and red oak under that stated condition. The same guide says ash has no decay resistance. Those facts apply to the guide’s white-ash context; they do not establish that ash and oak are interchangeable for every use.
