Make a freestanding outdoor Christmas tree by wrapping outdoor-rated solar fairy lights around a plant training frame and fastening them with twist ties. Set the finished frame in a decorative pot or place it in a garden bed, following the frame and lights’ instructions. The published DIY method does not specify a universal frame size, light count, spacing, or wind rating, so choose a frame and plan its placement for your site.
What you need
- A plant training frame or garden obelisk to form the tree shape.
- Solar fairy lights explicitly marked for outdoor use.
- Twist ties to secure the lights to the frame.
- Optionally, a decorative pot if the frame is designed to stand in one.
This materials list follows Bunnings Australia’s November 2025 DIY instructions, which use a plant training frame, solar fairy lights, and twist ties. How to make the light tree
- Choose the frame and location. Decide whether the tree will stand in a decorative pot or go in a garden bed. Check that the frame’s base suits the chosen location and that the planned position is clear of overhead power lines.
- Check the lights. Confirm the packaging identifies them as suitable for outdoor use. Inspect the lights and lead for damage; do not install damaged equipment. Follow the maker’s instructions for use and connection limits.
- Wrap the frame. Wind the solar fairy lights around the plant training frame, distributing them to create the tree outline. Secure the lights with twist ties. The cited instructions do not prescribe a particular wrapping density or spacing, so use the frame’s shape and the light maker’s directions as your guide.
- Set the tree in place. Position it in the decorative pot or place or stake it in a garden bed as appropriate for that frame. The DIY instructions do not establish a wind-load rating or guarantee stability; use a base and placement suitable for local conditions and the frame’s instructions.
- Arrange the solar unit. Follow the light manufacturer’s instructions for positioning the solar panel and operating the lights. Avoid improvising electrical modifications.
DIY frame or packaged pole-and-net tree?
A frame wrapped in lights is a straightforward made-at-home option. A packaged pole-and-net product is another way to create a freestanding cone of light, with components and product specifications supplied by its manufacturer. The choice depends on whether you prefer a DIY project or a packaged system, and on the space and setup your site allows.

Outdoor electrical and placement safety
- Use outdoor-rated equipment. Do not put indoor-only decorative lights outside. Québec’s government guidance and Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office both distinguish outdoor-use equipment by its suitability for weather exposure. - Inspect before setup. Check lights, plugs, and leads for damage. Do not use damaged equipment, and follow the manufacturer’s directions and limit for how many light strings may be connected. University of Illinois Extension: Deck the halls safely this holiday season.
- Use suitable outdoor connections. If an extension cord is needed, use one designed for outdoor use and keep connections weatherproof. Queensland’s regulator advises using factory-made extension leads or those made by a licensed electrical contractor; follow local electrical rules.
- Avoid overload and cord hazards. Do not overload outlets or extension cords. Use GFCI protection for outdoor electrical equipment where applicable. Unwind extension leads to reduce overheating risk, and do not connect extension cords end to end, as Québec advises.
- Keep clear of power lines. Illinois Extension advises keeping the decorator and equipment at least 10 feet from overhead power lines. Do not position or install the tree where it could contact them.
- Switch lights off when unattended. Québec and Queensland safety guidance recommends turning decorative lighting off before going to bed or leaving home.
Electrical requirements vary by jurisdiction. Follow local rules alongside the instructions for the specific lights, cords, frame, and any packaged system.
