You can make a household-material ornithopter that demonstrates birdlike flapping with cardboard, straws and simple hinges. For a better chance of powered flight, use a light frame, tissue-paper wings, a wire crank and a rubber-band motor: ordinary scrap cardboard alone is better treated as a motion prototype than a reliably flying model.
Choose a build that matches your goal
An ornithopter is a flying machine powered by flapping wings. In a rubber-band model, the unwinding band turns a crank; connecting rods convert that rotation into repeated wing movement. A simpler cardboard-and-straw version can make the wings flap, but the documented educational design for a flying attempt uses light spars, wire and tissue as well as common craft supplies.
| Build route | Materials | Mechanism | Realistic outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flapping demonstration | Scrap cardboard, straws, paper fasteners or wire, glue | Hand-operated hinge or lever | Shows the wing motion; do not assume it will sustain flight. |
| Rubber-band-powered model | Light wooden spars, tissue, wire, rubber band, glue, plus a crank support | Rubber-band motor, crank and connecting rods | A design intended for a flight attempt; performance depends on low mass, free movement, symmetry and tuning. |
The SCOPES-DF lesson, “Jingle Jangle Flying Machine,” is designed for ages 11–14 and uses iterative design. Its dimensions below belong to that particular design, not every ornithopter. Read the SCOPES-DF lesson. For a simpler visual demonstration, Position Is Everything’s household-material guide is another reference.

- Meng Model Dune Harkonnen Ornithopter
- Detailed scale model kit
- For collectors aged 14 years and over
- This it not a toy
- Balsa wood or wooden coffee stirrers for the body and wing structure.
- Music wire or paper clips for hooks, crank and linkages.
- A long rubber band.
- Tissue paper for the wing covering; the lesson specifies a piece 16 inches by 7 inches for its design.
- Craft glue, ruler, marker, scissors or a craft cutter, and a thin straw or bead to support the rotating crank.
Thin plywood, wire cutters, needle-nose pliers, a glue gun and super glue are listed as optional. Use substitutes only if they are light enough for the model and stiff enough for their job. A heavy frame or covering works against a flight attempt.
Build the body, tail and rubber-band motor
Make the body and tail
Cut a 5-inch body stick for the lesson’s design. Add a short crosspiece to support the crank and make the tail structure. The tail stabilizes the machine; keep it aligned with the body so you can make small adjustments later.

Fit the hooks and crank
Bend wire into a rear hook for the rubber band and a crank at the front. Secure the rear hook to the body. Support the crank in a thin tube or bead: as the lesson puts it, “The tube/bead holds the crank wire.” The crank must remain free to turn, so do not glue or pinch its rotating section.
Make matching wings and connect the linkage
Build a left and right wing from light spars and supports, following the lesson’s layout. Keep them as close to mirror images as you can: unequal wings or levers can make the flapping cycle uneven. Cover the frameworks with tissue paper, using the lesson’s 16-by-7-inch piece for its design.

Attach a lever to each wing and connect the levers to the crank with the connecting rod. Before adding the rubber band, turn the crank slowly by hand. Both wings should move freely through the same cycle without catching on the body or binding at a pivot. Correct rubbing or misalignment now; extra winding will not fix a mechanism that binds.
Attach the rubber band and try a flight
- Hook the rubber band between the rear body hook and the crank.
- Turn the crank to twist the band, then hold the model securely while you move to a clear, open area.
- Release it gently and watch the wings and flight path. Keep people, pets and fragile objects out of the launch area.
The University of Iowa Department of Physics & Astronomy says to wind its demonstration ornithopter up to 50 turns. That figure applies to the Iowa model, not this homemade design; start conservatively and stop if the band, crank or frame looks strained. The Iowa page also notes that tail position affects its model’s circular return. See the University of Iowa demonstration.

- THIS IS A MODEL KIT THAT REQUIRES ASSEMBLY
- The 1/72 Atreides Ornithopter with a wingspan of 720mm (28.5 inches) delivers an unmatched sense of amazement. Its massive size becomes even more pronounced compared to the MMS-011 Atreides Ornithopter. (The MMS-011 Atreides Ornithopter is sold separately.)
- The kit includes two sets of interchangeable landing gear systems, reproducing both the landing and flying modes.
- The wings can rotate, retract, and unfold as per the settings.
- The gear mechanism inside the fuselage allows for independent control of each pair of wings, enabling the left and right sections to perform flapping motions up and down together.
Troubleshoot by changing one thing at a time
- Wings stick or move unevenly: Check that the crank turns freely, the pivots are not pinched, and the connecting rod does not rub the body.
- One wing travels differently: Compare the left and right spar and lever shapes, then correct any difference in alignment.
- The model curves or circles: Adjust the tail a little at a time and observe the change. The Iowa demonstration specifically identifies tail position as affecting its model’s return path.
- The wings flap but the model does not fly: Treat that as a successful motion demonstration, not proof of a failed build. A heavier cardboard construction may flap without producing a reliable free flight; reduce unnecessary mass and check for friction before trying again.
These checks follow from the design’s moving parts and are practical tuning guidance, not guaranteed fixes. The cited sources do not establish a general success rate, flight duration, current build cost or proof that models made entirely from household scraps sustain flight. Make’s 2007 article reports a historical cost of “about $1.30” attributed to project maker Royalestel; it is not a current budget estimate. The same maker’s view that one “really only” needs to ensure bearings are parallel is an opinion about that project, not a universal guarantee of easy construction. Read Make’s 2007 project article.
