How to Make an Alaskan Ulu Knife: Traditional Forms and a Responsible Build Plan

An ulu’s design varies by community, period, and materials, so there is no single universal pattern to copy. Museum sources document traditional forms and construction details, including an Alutiiq slate-blade example, but they do not provide a complete modern knife-making procedure. If you want to make one, start by choosing a specific documented form and use; treat the details below as a historically grounded design brief, not as instructions for forging, grinding, heat-treating, or sharpening a blade.

Choose the form before choosing the materials

“Alaskan ulu” describes a family of curved knives, not one fixed specification. The Alutiiq Museum describes a traditional Alutiiq example with a broad, convex slate blade and a beveled edge, suited to cutting and splitting fish. Museum collections also document other materials and handle arrangements. These examples show variation; they should not be combined into a supposedly standard design.

Documented example Blade and edge Handle or attachment Context
Traditional Alutiiq form described by the Alutiiq Museum Thin slate leaf, ground to shape; broad, convex profile with a beveled edge Wooden handle secured with baleen or spruce-root lashing through a small hole in the blade A regional construction description, not a universal ulu specification. Alutiiq Museum: “Word of the Week: Ulu”
Smithsonian collection example, “Woman’s Knife Ulu” Collection record describes a stone blade Record documents a woven handle An individual artifact; its construction should not be treated as the standard for all ulus. Smithsonian: “Woman’s Knife Ulu”
Smithsonian collection example, “Semi-lunar knife” Iron blade Wood and walrus-ivory components An individual iron-bladed artifact, not a template for every regional tradition. Smithsonian: “Semi-lunar knife”

The Alutiiq Museum’s Alutiiq Technological Inventory also shows a ground slate ulu and explains grinding as a way to shape soft stone or form an edge. It does not give dimensions, tool specifications, a grit sequence, or workshop safety directions.

Understand how the curved blade is used

The arc and centrally placed handle support a pushing or rocking cut. The Alaska State Museum explains that a push directs force toward the middle of the blade, unlike the drawing motion used with a typical straight knife. Museum sources describe ulus used for tasks including processing fish and game, cutting blubber, and working skins and furs. Uses vary; do not assume every ulu or user is associated with every task. See the Sheldon Jackson Museum’s “Artifacts of the Month: Ulu”.

Turn the historical details into a responsible build brief

Before making or commissioning a knife, decide which documented tradition or artifact you are using as a reference. Record the intended task and the features you want to preserve. For an Alutiiq-inspired reference, for example, that might mean the broad convex slate profile and the documented wooden handle with lashing. Identify it as an Alutiiq example rather than claiming it represents all Alaska Native ulus.

  • Name the reference: Cite the museum description or collection object that informs your design.
  • Specify the use: A form documented for fish processing is not automatically a general-purpose pattern.
  • Keep material choices distinct: Slate, iron, and steel appear in documented examples, but the sources do not establish a single preferred material or rank their performance.
  • Describe the attachment accurately: The baleen or spruce-root lashing through a blade hole is documented for the Alutiiq example, not for every ulu.
  • Ask for appropriate expertise: If your plan involves contemporary steel fabrication, consult a qualified knife maker or an authoritative, task-specific knife-making guide for the actual process and safety practices.

What this guide cannot safely supply

The cited museum and collection sources establish historical examples, materials, uses, and some construction details. They do not establish a complete contemporary sequence for making a steel ulu. They provide no supported instructions for steel selection, forging or stock removal, heat treatment, grinding temperatures, fasteners, edge geometry, sharpening, or shop safety. Supplying those steps here would require evidence and safety guidance that these sources do not provide. Do not treat a historical artifact description as a modern fabrication manual.
