To make a folded-corner acrylic box, cut four near-through 90-degree V-grooves in one sheet, tape the opposite face across each groove, then fold the panels and solvent-cement the mitered seams. The tape acts as a temporary hinge; the grooves create the folds. A separate acrylic hinge is only needed if your design has a separately attached lid.
How the tape-hinge method works
The method turns a single rectangular sheet into a box body. Four V-grooves define the sides and bottom; leaving a thin layer of acrylic uncut lets each panel bend and snap along its groove. Solvent-resistant tape on the ungrooved face holds the panels together as temporary hinges. Once folded, the mitered edges are aligned and bonded from inside the box with acrylic solvent cement.
Make Magazine’s “Hinge Technique” Acrylic Box Construction describes this approach. It does not specify a universal groove depth, so do not treat a particular measurement as suitable for every sheet or setup.
Materials and tools
- Acrylic sheet sized for the box body.
- A way to cut four straight, 90-degree V-grooves, such as an appropriate router and bit setup.
- Solvent-resistant tape for the ungrooved face and for holding the folded corners.
- Acrylic solvent cement suitable for the sheet, plus a needle-type applicator for controlled placement.
- A rubber band or other suitable fixture to help hold the box while cementing.
- Eye and skin protection appropriate to the cutting process and cement product.
ACRYLITE’s cementing guidance lists an applicator among likely supplies and emphasizes clean, accurately fitted edges. Select cement for the materials and follow that product’s instructions and safety information.

Cut, tape, and fold the box
- Plan the layout. Mark the four fold lines on the sheet so each V-groove runs parallel to, and equally spaced from, its corresponding edge. Confirm the panel layout and box dimensions before cutting.
- Cut the V-grooves. Make each groove close to, but not through, the sheet. Aim for a consistent, clean cut. The project instructions warn that excessive heat can remelt acrylic into rough, white residue in the groove, which can spoil the finish and weaken the resulting joint. Remove re-melted material carefully rather than leaving it in the fold.
- Tape the ungrooved face. Apply a continuous strip of solvent-resistant tape centered over each groove. This tape will hold the panels as you fold them.
- Fold and clear the corners. Bend and snap the acrylic along each groove. Remove the small corner scraps and trim tape where it would interfere with the corners meeting.
- Raise and secure the sides. Fold the panels upward, bring the mitered edges into alignment, and tape the outside corners tightly. Check that the box is square and the seams meet cleanly before cementing.
Apply solvent cement safely
With the box supported and the mitered seams aligned, apply acrylic solvent cement along the inside of the joints. Capillary cementing can form a strong, transparent joint when the fit and process are right, but poor edge preparation or alignment can leave a weak or unattractive seam. ACRYLITE cautions that polished or rounded edges can cause problems; prepare clean edges and support the parts with tape or a fixture while cementing.
Work in a well-ventilated area. Solvent products can be volatile and potentially flammable: do not smoke nearby, protect your skin, and consult the safety data sheet for the particular cement. Follow the manufacturer’s handling, application, and cure instructions.

Make’s project instructions suggest letting the adhesive sit for several hours at minimum and describe overnight as best. Those are project-specific directions, not a universal cure-time guarantee; the chosen cement’s instructions govern. Keep the tape and supports in place until the product allows their removal.

No, not for the tape-hinge construction method: its taped V-grooves temporarily connect the box’s folded panels. If you are making a box with a separate lid that needs to open, attached hinge hardware is a different design choice. Product descriptions give dimensions and design features, but do not establish a universal best hinge or comparative strength ranking.
