Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMake the sign a short wayfinding message, not a traffic-control device: identify the business, say that it is open, and give one accurate direction to the temporary entrance or customer parking. Use large, high-contrast lettering on a weather-suitable panel, obtain permission for the exact location, keep pedestrians and sight lines clear, and remove or update the sign as soon as access changes.
A business sign can help customers find you during road work, but it does not authorize placement in a public right-of-way or allow you to copy official detour, closure, warning, or regulatory signs. The road agency or project contractor remains responsible for work-zone traffic control.

Start with the customer’s one-second question
A driver or pedestrian approaching your site usually needs only two answers: “Is this business open?” and “Where do I enter?” Put those answers first. A useful temporary sign normally contains:

- One direction to the current entrance or customer parking, such as “Entrance on Oak Street” or “Customer parking →.”
Add a phone number, website, hours, or a short explanation only if customers genuinely need it to complete the route. Long copy is difficult to read from a moving vehicle and competes with the direction that matters most.

Examples of concise messages
- SMITH HARDWARE — OPEN
Customer entrance on Pine Street → - CAFE OPEN DURING ROAD WORK
Parking behind the building ← - WE ARE OPEN
Use the east driveway
Use the street name, side of the building, or driveway that a first-time visitor can verify. Do not point toward an entrance that is closed, blocked by equipment, or accessible only through a route that the road authority has prohibited.
Confirm where a business sign may go
Before designing the panel, identify who controls the proposed location. A sign on your own parcel may still be subject to local sign rules, lease terms, visibility restrictions, or construction instructions. A verge, sidewalk, median, shoulder, parking area owned by someone else, or other public right-of-way may be controlled by a municipality, transportation department, utility, or project contractor.
Permissions to check
- Property owner or landlord: confirm that the panel, stake, frame, or banner may be installed at the chosen spot and ask about acceptable dimensions, attachment methods, and removal dates.
- Local sign authority: ask the city or county planning, code-enforcement, or permitting office whether a temporary sign permit, banner permit, or business-sign allowance applies.
- Road authority: ask which agency controls the road, sidewalk, and right-of-way. Its rules may differ from the property owner’s rules.
- Project contractor: if construction fencing, barricades, or a temporary traffic-control plan affects the location, obtain written direction before placing anything near the work zone.
Keep the permission contact, any permit number, and the planned removal date with your project records. Permission for a sign on private property does not make placement in a public work zone lawful.
Keep the route safe
Do not place a panel where it narrows a sidewalk, blocks an accessible route, covers a curb ramp, forces people into traffic, obscures a driveway, hides a pedestrian from drivers, or interferes with an official sign, signal, barricade, cone, or sight triangle. Never attach a business sign to a traffic-control device unless the authority expressly permits it. If the only visible location is in the work zone or roadway, ask the road agency or contractor to provide an approved customer-information sign instead.
Understand what the MUTCD does—and does not—do
The Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 11th Edition (2023) covers traffic-control signs and devices within its scope. It discusses regulatory, warning, and guide signs and addresses qualities such as visibility, placement, and nighttime use. It is not a blanket permission for a private business to install a sign on public land, in a work zone, or beside a highway.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
A homemade “OPEN” panel should not imitate the color, shape, wording, symbol, or placement of an official closure, detour, warning, or regulatory sign. Customers should be able to tell that it is private business information rather than an instruction from the road authority.
Nighttime visibility
For signs covered by the MUTCD’s nighttime provisions, the manual requires retroreflective material or illumination. Ordinary streetlights, headlights, highway lighting, or a flashing strobe do not automatically satisfy that requirement. Because a business-made sign is not automatically a compliant traffic-control sign, do not assume that adding reflective tape or a lamp makes it legal for roadway use. Ask the responsible agency when a sign will be visible after dark or close to traffic.

The MUTCD is applied through state adoption and local practice. California, for example, publishes a 2026 California MUTCD landing page and includes setting-specific requirements for temporary traffic-control sign materials. California dimensions or material rules should not be copied into another state. Use the manual and ordinances adopted by the jurisdiction where the sign will stand.
Choose the production method
Most businesses have two practical choices: make a simple panel in-house or order a custom-printed sign. The right choice depends on how quickly the route may change, how long the project will last, and whether you can produce lettering that remains readable at the expected viewing distance.
| Decision factor | Make it yourself | Order a custom sign |
|---|---|---|
| Lead time | Can be produced immediately if a suitable panel, printer, paint, or vinyl is available. | Requires design approval, production, and delivery time. |
| Message changes | Easy to replace or revise when an entrance moves. | A replacement may be needed if the printed panel cannot be edited. |
| Legibility | Depends on your layout, lettering method, and print quality. | Usually easier to obtain a clean, professionally cut or printed layout, but review the proof carefully. |
| Weather and duration | You select the panel, ink, paint, edge protection, and support. | Ask the printer what outdoor exposure and mounting method the chosen material is intended to handle. |
| Total cost | Includes panel, printing or lettering, supports, fasteners, ballast, and replacement risk. | Includes design, printing, shipping, supports, and any rush charge. |
| Site suitability | You remain responsible for choosing a stable support that is allowed at the site. | A printed product is not automatically approved for a public road, work zone, or regulated traffic-control use. |
Rigid and flexible materials are both recognized in the MUTCD’s traffic-control context, but that recognition does not certify a consumer yard sign or any particular product for roadway use. Select a panel and support for the permitted, on-site wayfinding location—not for an unauthorized position in traffic.

Design the message for rapid reading
Use a clear information hierarchy
Arrange the content so the most important information is encountered first:
- Business name or a familiar mark.
- OPEN or the equivalent status statement.
- One arrow or one short route instruction.
- Optional secondary detail, such as “entrance on the east side.”
Use plain, mixed-case or uppercase lettering that remains distinct from the background. A high-contrast combination, generous spacing, and a simple arrow generally work better than decorative fonts, dense graphics, or several competing arrows. Keep the arrow close to the words it qualifies and make its direction unambiguous.
Write for the actual approach
Stand at the point where a customer will first see the sign and ask what can be understood without stopping. If vehicles approach from two different directions, one panel may not be enough; use separate signs only where each location has permission and each sign gives a route that is accurate for that approach. Do not place a sign that tells drivers to make a turn they cannot safely or legally make.
Do not claim more than you can maintain
“Open” should remain true during the hours customers are expected to arrive. If the business has changed to appointment-only service, a side entrance, or limited parking, state the condition briefly rather than leaving customers to discover it. Remove “OPEN” wording when the business closes or the construction route ends.
Select a panel and support for the site
For a short project on permitted private property, a rigid panel or a flexible outdoor sheet can work if it is secured against the local wind, rain, and sun. The governing traffic-control manual recognizes both rigid and flexible sign materials in its own scope; it does not establish a universal consumer sign product, business-sign size, or letter-height standard.

Panel considerations
- Rigid panel: stays flat and is easy to read, but can act like a sail in wind and needs a stable frame or posts.
- Flexible sheet or banner: can be lighter and easier to store, but needs proper tensioning and fastening to prevent flapping, folding, or loss of legibility.
- Printed paper or cardboard: is suitable only for a protected, very short-term indoor or sheltered display; rain and sunlight can make it unreadable quickly.
Use outdoor-rated ink, paint, or vinyl when exposure warrants it, and protect printed edges from standing water. Choose supports that do not create a trip hazard or protrude into the pedestrian path. If the site is exposed to wind, ask the property owner or contractor what ballast or anchoring is allowed instead of improvising a heavy object in a walkway.
Build the sign: a practical step-by-step method
- Map the customer route. Walk or drive the approach from each relevant direction. Record the entrance that is open, the nearest permitted sign location, and any temporary barriers or one-way movements.
- Write the shortest accurate copy. Start with the business name, “OPEN,” and one direction. Remove slogans and details that a passing customer cannot use.
- Sketch the hierarchy. Reserve the largest area for “OPEN” and the route instruction. Check that the arrow remains visible if the sign is viewed from an angle.
- Choose the panel and support. Match the material to the project’s expected duration and weather. Confirm that the support is allowed by the property owner and will not obstruct access.
- Produce the lettering. Use a clean digital print, cut vinyl, stencil, or carefully applied outdoor paint. Inspect the finished panel from the actual viewing distance rather than only from a desk.
- Check the route against reality. Verify every street name, driveway, arrow, and parking instruction immediately before installation. Construction can change overnight.
- Install without entering the work zone. Place the sign only at the approved location, keep it outside pedestrian and vehicle clearances, and secure it so ordinary weather does not tip or rotate it.
- Photograph the installed sign. Save a picture showing its position relative to the sidewalk, driveway, and official devices. This creates a simple record for staff and for later removal.
- Inspect after the first weather event. Confirm that the panel is upright, readable, and not leaning into a route. Correct loose fasteners, glare, dirt, or a changed arrow immediately.
- Remove or revise it on schedule. Take it down when the entrance reopens, the project ends, the permit expires, or the message is no longer accurate.
When a custom-printed sign is the better choice
Order a custom panel when the project will last long enough to justify durable printing, when several signs must match, or when staff cannot produce clean lettering quickly. Give the printer the exact copy, finished dimensions, preferred orientation, viewing direction, mounting method, and expected outdoor duration. Ask for a proof before production.
Proofing checklist
- Is the business name spelled correctly?
- Does “OPEN” appear prominently enough to be read before secondary information?
- Does the arrow point in the correct direction when the sign is viewed from the road?
- Is the street, side entrance, or parking statement still true?
- Are contrast and lettering clear without relying on a small logo?
- Are grommets, holes, posts, or other mounting features located where the approved support requires them?
A professionally printed panel still needs lawful placement, a suitable support, and regular inspection. Printing quality does not turn a private information sign into an official traffic-control device.
Accessibility and temporary-sign timing
The U.S. Access Board’s Guide to the ADA Accessibility Standards: Chapter 7, Signs describes an exemption from the visual and tactile requirements covered by that guide for signs posted for seven days or less. “Seven days or less” is a narrow duration condition, not a general exemption from accessibility law, building requirements, local sign ordinances, or safe placement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Regardless of duration, preserve an accessible pedestrian route. Keep the sign, its feet, ballast, cables, and stakes out of the clear path; do not cover detectable warnings or curb ramps; and do not force wheelchair users, people with low vision, or people pushing strollers into moving traffic. If customers must use a temporary entrance, make the route information available in a way staff can explain verbally and keep the physical path usable.

Keep the sign current during a changing project
Road construction rarely follows a perfectly static schedule. Assign one person to check the sign at opening each day or whenever the contractor announces a traffic shift.
Inspect these conditions
- The entrance and parking shown by the arrow are still open.
- The panel is clean enough to read in daylight and, if relevant, after dark.
- The support is upright and does not wobble, tip, or encroach on a walkway.
- Wind, rain, dust, snow, or vehicle spray has not damaged the face.
- No barricade, cone, official sign, or sight line has been added in front of it.
- The wording still matches the hours and access policy customers will encounter.
Update the panel rather than adding handwritten corrections that make the hierarchy confusing. If the route changes more than once, a replaceable insert or a reusable frame can reduce waste, provided the insert remains weatherproof and firmly secured.
Troubleshoot common failures
Customers still drive past
Move the sign to the earliest permitted decision point, enlarge the “OPEN” and direction lines, remove secondary copy, and verify that the arrow is visible from the approach lane. Do not solve poor visibility by moving into an unauthorized shoulder or work zone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The arrow is misunderstood
Replace diagonal or decorative arrows with one simple directional arrow and a street or side-of-building reference. Check the sign from the driver’s actual approach, because a panel that looks correct from the sidewalk can appear reversed from the road.
The sign keeps falling over
Stop using an improvised support. Ask the property owner or contractor which anchoring or ballast is allowed, then select a stable frame that stays outside the pedestrian route. Do not add weights where they create a trip hazard.
The route changed unexpectedly
Covering one word is rarely enough if the arrow, street name, or parking instruction is now wrong. Remove the panel until a corrected message is installed, and notify staff so they can give the same directions verbally.
Someone asks whether the sign is an official detour
Explain that it is a private business-access notice and direct questions about road closures, lane shifts, or regulated detours to the road authority or project contractor. Never present the panel as an official instruction.
Quick Recap
Final installation checklist
- Business name and “OPEN” are immediately visible.
- Only one accurate customer direction is given.
- Copy is short, high-contrast, and readable from the approach.
- The panel and support suit the expected weather and duration.
- Property owner, local authority, and road-project permissions have been checked for the exact location.
- The sign does not block a sidewalk, accessible route, curb ramp, driveway, sight line, or official traffic-control device.
- The design does not imitate a regulatory, warning, guide, closure, or detour sign.
- Nighttime visibility has been discussed with the responsible authority when relevant; no assumption has been made that ordinary lighting makes the sign compliant.
- A person is assigned to inspect, update, and remove the sign.
