The method below follows WOOD Magazine’s June 7, 2017 example; its dimensions are specific to that example, not a universal plan for every square hole.
Tools for the wood-panel method
- Drill press and 3/8-inch Forstner bit
- 3/8-inch hollow mortising chisel, of the type made for a mortising machine
- 1/4-inch hand chisel
Make the square mortise

Mark the mortise
Lay out the square peg location on the panel. The four corners define where the initial holes go.

Drill the corner holes
With the panel secured on the drill press, use the 3/8-inch Forstner bit to drill a 1/8-inch-deep hole at each corner of the marked location. These shallow holes establish the corners for the mortise.

Cut the straight edges
Replace the bit with the 3/8-inch hollow mortising chisel. Align the chisel edges with the panel edges and drive it 1/8 inch into the wood, as in the example. The corner holes and chisel cuts form the square outline.

Clean the mortise
Use the 1/4-inch hand chisel to clean the mortise and remove remaining waste.
When this method fits
This is a woodworking technique for the square mortise shown in a wood panel, not a general method for turning any round hole into a square opening. The cited article does not establish instructions for metal, masonry, different materials, or other square-hole applications, and it gives no tolerances or alternative-method comparison. For a square peg covering a screwhead, WOOD Magazine suggests that a slightly protruding peg in contrasting wood can be a deliberate design choice; a matching round plug may look like a dot after finishing.
