You can make a large Halloween spider web by cutting openings into tubular polyester beef netting, then stretching it tightly across the space you want to decorate. The method below follows HGTV’s tutorial; it explains construction and installation, but does not establish how to wash, store, or reuse the web in later seasons.
Materials and tools
- 5 lb. of polyester beef netting, as specified by HGTV’s tutorial
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Clip-on spiders, or fishing line for attaching spiders
Make the web from tubular netting
- Measure the installation area. Decide where the web will go and measure the span so you can cut a suitable length of netting.
- Cut the netting and open a seam. Cut a length of tubular netting, then open one seam so the tube can be unfolded into a broader sheet.
- Fold and cut scattered openings. Fold the material as directed in the tutorial and cut holes at irregular intervals. Varying the openings helps create the web-like pattern.
Install and finish the web
- Make attachment openings. Cut openings at the points where the web will attach to its supports.
- Stretch it across the space. Pull the netting from end to end and secure it at the attachment points. HGTV says the material looks best when stretched tightly.
- Adjust the pattern. Add more holes where needed after installation. The tutorial also suggests scraping scissors across the netting to create runs; this is an optional way to alter its appearance.
- Add spiders. Fasten clip-on spiders to the netting, or tie them on with fishing line.
A smaller framed alternative: thread on cardboard
For a compact craft rather than a large stretched installation, the IET’s spider-web activity uses corrugated cardboard as a backing and string, wool, or cotton for the web.

- Cut notches around the edge of a piece of corrugated cardboard.
- Anchor thread in the notches and stretch strands across the backing to make the framework.
- Tie additional strands across the framework to form the web.
This is a different construction approach: the netting method spans a larger installation area, while the cardboard activity makes a web held by a backing. The cited instructions do not compare the two for durability, storage convenience, or realism.

What “reusable” means for this project
Although reuse is the goal, HGTV’s instructions cover cutting and installation only. They do not specify how to remove, clean, or store the netting, or whether it will hold up through repeated Halloween seasons. Avoid assuming that it is machine-washable, weather-resistant, or proven for multi-season use based on these directions alone.
