To make a huge UFO, first decide whether it will sit on the ground, hang as a decoration, or be raised above people. Each use calls for a different structure: a lightweight craft can work for a small suspended scene, while a large event prop needs transportable sections and a suitable support and installation plan. Documented 7-, 8- and 16.5-metre projects show possible approaches—not plans or safety specifications to copy.
Choose the display before choosing materials
A grounded crashed saucer, a hanging yard decoration and an overhead stage feature are different construction problems. Decide the display location, approximate size and how the UFO will be supported before settling on a design. Also plan how it will be moved, stored, assembled and accessed once installed.
- Grounded prop: A partial saucer can suggest a craft that has crashed into the ground. It may avoid building a complete underside.
- Hanging decoration: A small, non-structural scene can use lightweight craft materials, but that does not make the method suitable for a huge prop.
- Elevated or suspended structure: A prop above a stage or in the air needs a support and installation plan suited to its site and use. The published examples below are specialist projects, not do-it-yourself rigging instructions.
What documented UFO builds show
These examples illustrate how size and setting change the build. Their dimensions and structural details belong to the projects described; they are not generally applicable design values.

Plan a large grounded UFO in transportable sections
The Goodwood example offers a useful planning reference for a large prop intended to appear crashed. Spur Creative divided its 8-metre-diameter saucer into sections for transport and storage, made a master section with MDF, moulded and cast fibreglass, and bonded a metal frame into each section. The sections were bolted together on assembly and the finished prop was sprayed silver. The project also included lights, smoke and sound. These are details of one build, not a specification for another.

- Set the footprint and visual effect. Decide how much of the saucer needs to be visible. In the Goodwood installation, the other half was not required because the UFO was meant to look crashed into the ground.
- Work out transport and storage early. Choose section sizes and joins with the route to the site, available storage and assembly sequence in mind. Spur Creative’s sections were designed to be bolted together after transport.
- Choose shell and frame as a system. The project used a metal frame bonded into fibreglass sections. That combination is evidence of one scenic build, not a universal material recipe; a design needs to suit its actual dimensions, support and setting.
- Finish for the actual shell material. The Goodwood prop was sprayed silver, but its project page does not specify a paint brand or formulation. Verify that any chosen coating is compatible with the material being finished.
- Add effects only after the basic installation is planned. Lights, smoke and sound were features of the Goodwood prop. Any effects should be considered alongside access, power and the actual venue requirements.
Do not scale up a craft project or copy an overhead structure
For a small yard scene, Yard Plotted’s concept uses two plastic saucer sleds, a hula hoop and six yards of tulle; the decoration is suspended from a branch so its rope is less visible after dark. That is a lightweight visual idea, not a structural design. The source does not establish that it can withstand weather or support a large object.
At the other end of the scale, the ELO stage saucer and helicopter-flown Rio artwork depended on project-specific support and specialist operations. Their dimensions, beams, wind appraisal and flight arrangement cannot be safely transferred to a different site or build. The available project descriptions do not provide a general DIY structural design, anchoring details, permit guidance or universal wind limit. For a structure raised over people or suspended in the air, arrange assessment and installation appropriate to the actual site, dimensions, materials and support method.

For a craft-scale alien or UFO idea
If the goal is a small sculpture rather than an overhead structure, the Smithsonian Hirshhorn’s found-object activity suggests experimenting with arrangements, placing the feet on the ground and building upward with found materials. It advises adult help for hard-to-cut objects such as cardboard. Those craft suggestions do not address structural engineering. (Smithsonian Hirshhorn)
