You can build a small recirculating vortex fountain around a glass cylinder, a submersible pump and a catch basin. A documented design uses a 6-inch-tall, 4-inch-diameter cylinder with a 1/2-inch opening in its base, but it does not specify a universal pump rating. The title’s $2,500 comparison is unverified, so treat this as a build concept—not a guaranteed way to save a particular amount.
How the DIY vortex fountain works
The smartpond project guide describes a simple recirculating arrangement: a pump in a catch basin pushes water through tubing and a 90-degree elbow into a glass cylinder. The cylinder sits above an opening in the basin grate. Water returns to the basin, where it can be pumped through the system again. Decorative stones can hide the basin and plumbing; lights are optional.
The guide’s example cylinder is 6 inches tall and 4 inches in diameter, with a 1/2-inch hole drilled through its base. These are dimensions for that project, not universal requirements. Read the smartpond Vortex Fountain Project guide before choosing parts.
Materials and fit checks
- Glass cylinder sized for your chosen layout
- Glass drill bit suitable for the cylinder’s material, if drilling the base yourself
- 1/2-inch 90-degree elbow compatible with the opening and tubing
- Tubing and a clamp that fit the elbow and pump outlet
- Catch basin with a grate or support opening
- Submersible fountain pump
- Water, plus optional fountain lights and decorative stones
This is a component list based on the guide, not a tested bill of materials. Confirm dimensions and fitting compatibility before assembly. The guide emphasizes water pressure but does not give a universal flow rate or head rating; select a pump for the actual plumbing, cylinder and basin rather than assuming one specification will suit every build. The guide also links to a related vortex fountain kit.

- 4 Different Water Styles - This solar water pump set contains 1 separate solar panel, 1 fountain pump bulit-in filter, a 3m/ 9.84ft cable and 4 different nozzles. 4 different nozzles bring you 4 different styles of fountain effects. Can be used for different water flow and water heights, add more fun to your garden and make your garden look more comfortable and inviting.
- Easy to Use - After installing the nozzle, place the pump completely in the water, with the nozzle over the water surface. Make sure the pump is securely fastened to the bottom of the fountain to avoid vibration. Plug the jack of the pump into the jack of the solar panel output. Expose the solar panels to full sunlight and the fountain will automatically work within 3 seconds.
- Built-in filter water pump- Solar water pump built in a filter,it can be used to filter impurities in the water to ensure that the pump water flow smoothly. Please use the solar pump in clean water. Leaves, dust and other debris can easily clog the filter and make the pump stop working.
- Eco-friendly & Energy Saving - Completely powered by solar energy, no batteries and electricity required. Please note that the water fountain kit doesn't store energy ,it only operates under direct sunlight and stops working on cloudy or rainy days.
- Troubleshooting Guide for Solar Water Pump Kits- If the water pump stops working due to a malfunction, please follow these steps to resolve the issue: 1. Check if the filter inside the pump is clogged with debris and clean it. 2. Check if the solar panel is covered with dirt or debris and clean it. 3. Check if the water level is high enough to submerge the pump, and add water if necessary. 4. Ensure the solar panel is placed in direct sunlight.
Build and set up the fountain
- Plan the layout. Place the basin where it can support the cylinder and conceal the pump while leaving access for cleaning. Check that the arrangement is stable and that splashes will not reach electrical connections or damage nearby surfaces.
- Prepare the cylinder. For the documented design, make a 1/2-inch opening in the base of a 6-by-4-inch cylinder. Glass can crack during drilling; if you are not equipped to drill it safely, arrange for suitable glass-drilling work rather than forcing the bit.
- Connect the water path. Fit the 90-degree elbow through the opening, attach compatible tubing, secure it with a clamp, and connect the tubing to the pump as shown in the guide.
- Position the assembly. Set the cylinder above the basin-grate opening so returning water can drain into the basin. Keep the pump submerged and ensure the tubing is not kinked or strained.
- Fill and test. Add water before powering the pump. Observe the flow and check for leaks, unstable parts, excessive splashing or water escaping the basin. Adjust the arrangement and water level as needed; no single pump setting is specified for all builds.
- Finish accessibly. Add stones or optional lights only after confirming that the pump can be reached and removed for maintenance.
Keeping the fountain running safely
A small recirculating fountain depends on adequate water in its basin. The Quox Creek Vortex Fountain Owner’s Manual, issued by MRM Innovations, LLC, warns: “Do not let the Vortex Fountain run dry; the pump is designed to be fully submerged and can be severely damaged (or burned out) if it runs without enough water.” Although the manual covers a commercial fountain rather than this DIY layout, the pump-protection warning is relevant to submerged-pump designs.
- Check the water level regularly, especially as water evaporates or splashes out.
- Unplug the pump before cleaning or servicing it.
- Rinse debris from the pump intake when needed.
- Do not add fish or other aquatic life; the Quox Creek manual advises against it.
- Keep stones and other finish materials from blocking the pump or making it inaccessible.
Tap-water minerals may appear in the vortex and leave deposits as water evaporates. VortexFountain.com recommends distilled water for its tabletop product to reduce these effects. A DIY basin may behave differently, but mineral buildup and evaporation are worth checking during routine maintenance.

What the $2,500 comparison does—and does not—establish
The available sources do not identify a specific $2,500 product or establish the total cost of the DIY build, so they cannot support a savings figure. A fair comparison would need current prices for a complete parts list and a clearly matched finished product, as well as the cost of tools or glass-drilling work and the value of assembly time.
For context only, VortexFountain.com describes its own commercial tabletop model as 10.5 inches long, 10.5 inches wide and 13 inches high, with a six-foot cord for 110V North American power and an approximately 1.5-gallon recirculating capacity. Those are specifications for that product—not the smartpond DIY design. Its FAQ also says the maker does not offer a DIY kit. Compare dimensions, finish, pump suitability, maintenance access and splash or water-loss risks before deciding whether a homemade arrangement meets your needs. See the maker’s Frequently Asked Questions for its product details.
