The simplest DIY camping pad is a piece of closed-cell foam cut to fit your sleeping area. It can add cushioning and help limit moisture buildup beneath a sleeping bag, but its warmth and comfort are not established by thickness alone. A self-inflating pad is a substantially more involved project: it needs a sealed fabric shell, foam, and a valve.
Choose a build that fits the trip
First decide whether you need a custom fit, a simple layer of ground protection, or a more complete sleep system. Car camping leaves more room to carry a bulky mat; for backpacking, packed bulk and carried weight matter more. REI describes air, self-inflating, and closed-cell foam pads as the three main styles, and notes that camping context affects pad choice: REIโs camping sleeping-pad guide.

The National Park Service describes foam pads as inexpensive but bulky and not especially cushioned. That makes a cut-to-size mat a straightforward project, not a guarantee of a comfortable or warm night. See the NPS camping gear guidance.
Make a simple closed-cell foam mat
- Plan for where you will use and carry it. For car camping, you may prefer a larger sleeping footprint. For backpacking, account for the foamโs packed bulk as well as its weight.
- Choose foam sold for camping mats. One supplier lists XPE camping-mat foam in single-layer thicknesses from 3โ15 mm and laminated thicknesses from 15โ200 mm. These are supplier-listed material options, not recommendations for warmth or comfort: Bofeng Foamโs XPE camping-mat material page.
- Mark the footprint you want. Lay out the sleeping area on the foam and mark a shape that suits your setup. There is no universally established DIY pad dimension.
- Cut carefully and check the fit. The reviewed sources do not establish a required cutting method, so use a method suitable for the material and handle cutting tools safely.
- Test it at home before relying on it outdoors. Lie on it in your usual sleeping position and check fit and comfort. Adjust the shape if needed; do not assume a particular thickness will be warm enough.
- Keep it dry and inspect it before the trip. The available product evidence does not establish a specific wet-weather performance or service life for a homemade mat.
Why a self-inflating pad is a bigger project
A self-inflating design needs more than foam: it uses a fabric shell that can be heat-sealed and an air valve. Backpackerโs tutorial, updated July 28, 2026, describes using a clothes iron for sealing and recommends practicing test seals before making the finished pad. It also covers cutting the foam and making a valve opening. Because the construction sequence depends on the materials and design, follow the original Backpacker tutorial rather than improvising from a shortened outline.

Do not guess a homemade padโs R-value
R-value is a measured comparative value, not something that can be reliably assigned from a homemade padโs apparent thickness. ASTMโs F3340-18 standard page includes closed-cell, non-inflatable foam mats within its scope. It describes a controlled, steady-state test that compresses a mattress between hot and cold plates. ASTM says the resulting value can be repeatable and useful for comparison, while noting that real-world heat loss can differ because of edge losses, uncovered areas, changes in compression, and sleeping posture.
The ASTM page identifies F3340-18 as historical and indicates F3340-22 is active; check the standardโs page for the current edition. A laboratory result is not a promise that an individual sleeper will feel warm, and the standard does not provide a rating for an untested DIY pad.

When to buy or layer a finished pad instead
If cold exposure makes insulation performance consequential, use a tested product rather than relying on an unrated homemade mat. A commercial closed-cell foam camping pad is also a simpler option if you want a finished product. Therm-a-Rest describes closed-cell foam as lightweight and durable, but less compressible than open-cell foam, and suggests layering it beneath another pad in colder conditions: Therm-a-Restโs sleeping-pad selection advice.
For one product-specific example, Therm-a-Rest says its Original Z Lite closed-cell pad adds 1.7 R-value when placed under another pad. That figure applies to the manufacturerโs named product and layering claim, not to homemade foam.
