What to build
Kubb—also commonly spelled “Koob”—is played with wooden pieces on a marked rectangular pitch. Kubb World describes a set with ten kubbs, six batons, one king and four or six field markers. For commonly used tournament dimensions, the finished pieces are:

These are finished-piece measurements from Kubb World’s game rules. The king is often given a crown design, but its decorative shape is not specified as a required dimension.
Plan the materials and cuts
Choose stock based on the finished measurements, not a board’s nominal label. Lumber sold as a particular size may measure differently in reality, and planing, sanding or cutting can reduce it further. Confirm actual stock dimensions before laying out cuts. The rules specify final piece sizes, but not a particular wood species, lumber size, dowel size or cut sequence.

- For the ten kubbs, the finished blank must allow a square 7 cm cross-section and 15 cm height after cutting and finishing.
- For the king, allow a finished 9 cm square cross-section and 30 cm height; plan any crown detail separately so it does not reduce the required body dimensions.
- For the six batons, use round stock that finishes to 4.4 cm diameter and cut each to 30 cm long.
- Allow for saw kerf and any material removed during sanding or shaping. The rules do not publish a kerf allowance, so determine it from your saw and stock rather than treating an inferred figure as official.
- Make four or six field markers. Their construction dimensions are not specified in the cited rules.
Because stock sizes vary, a responsible cut plan starts with measured material and a test cut. Check the first finished kubb and baton against the target sizes before repeating the cuts for the rest of the set. Smooth sharp edges and splinters so the pieces are comfortable to handle; this is practical finishing advice, not a rulebook requirement.
Build the pieces
- Measure and mark. Lay out the kubb and king blanks using the target finished dimensions, accounting for the actual stock and material removed by cutting or finishing.
- Cut the kubbs. Cut ten pieces to a finished 7 × 7 × 15 cm. Check their cross-sections and height after cutting.
- Cut the king. Cut one piece to a finished 9 × 9 × 30 cm. Add a crown or other identifying detail if desired.
- Cut the batons. Cut six round batons to 30 cm long, finishing at 4.4 cm diameter.
- Finish and inspect. Remove rough splinters and verify the final dimensions. Keep the finished pieces together so you can check the full set before playing.
- Make field markers. Prepare four corner markers and, for the described championship layout, two additional markers for the sideline midpoints.
The steps above translate published finished dimensions into a straightforward DIY approach; neither Kubb World nor the championship rules provide a complete fabrication plan.

Lay out the pitch
A commonly specified championship pitch is 5 m wide by 8 m long. Mark the four corners and the midpoint of each long sideline, which indicates the center line. The Kubb World Championship rules specify this field size, and the U.S. National Kubb Championship rules and tips also summarize a 5 × 8 m field.
Place five base kubbs evenly along each short baseline and stand the king at the center of the pitch. Use a tape measure to check the length and width before play so the baselines and center line correspond to the marked field.

How the pieces work in play
In the described championship format, teams throw batons from behind their baseline toward the opposing team’s base kubbs. Kubbs knocked down are thrown into the other half of the pitch and stood upright where they land; these become field kubbs. On the next turn, the team must knock down field kubbs before attacking the opponent’s remaining base kubbs. If field kubbs are not cleared, the closest one to the center line can determine the other team’s forward throwing baseline.
A team may target the king only after clearing the opponent’s kubbs. Knocking the king down prematurely loses the game. Event rules and house rules can differ, so check the current rules for the competition you plan to enter. Kubb World Championship posted a 2026 rules-update notice at Updated rules 2026.

Tournament play or a casual set?
The dimensions above are for championship-style play, not a requirement for every backyard game. Kubb World describes casual adaptations such as reducing the pitch size or allowing children to throw from the center line. Those are variants, not the championship setup described above.
Ready-made sets also vary. The U.S. National Kubb Championship advises buyers to compare listed piece dimensions with tournament size rather than relying on the product label alone. If buying instead of building, check the kubb, king and baton measurements against the table before ordering. Kubb World recommends a set on its homepage and describes it as meeting official dimensions; that is the publisher’s product claim, not an independent comparison.
