To make a giant spider for Halloween, choose a build method that fits its size, weight, finish, and storage needs: use PVC and chicken wire for a rigid, large frame; supported pool noodles or pipe insulation for lighter, bendable legs; or mesh and expanding foam for a sculpted body. These are different designs, not one combined materials list. Decide where the spider will sit and how you will move and store it before you start.
Choose a construction method
Think about the intended span, portability, appearance, assembly effort, and exposure to weather before buying materials. The projects below illustrate different approaches; there is no controlled side-by-side testing establishing one as strongest or most weather-resistant.

Gather materials for your chosen route
Keep each materials list tied to its design; combining all the supplies below is not necessary.
Rigid PVC frame
- PVC pipe and matching connectors
- A saw or other cutting tool suitable for the pipe, and sanding tools for smoothing cut edges
- Chicken wire, zip ties, and paint or other finish if the selected plan calls for them
- PVC cement if specified by the plan
This Old House’s project describes cutting and sanding the pipe, painting components, and assembling connectors with PVC cement. Its dimensions and assembly sequence belong to that specific plan, rather than serving as universal measurements. See its project instructions.

Supported noodle legs
- Pool noodles or foam pipe insulation
- Fencing or craft wire when the selected design uses internal support
- Ties or tape for fastening
For its particular porch-spider tutorial, eHow specifies four six-foot pieces of 9-gauge fencing wire and four pool noodles. Those quantities are not a general materials requirement for every size or design. Check the eHow instructions before cutting materials.
Sculpted body
- Chicken wire and expanding spray foam
- Pipe insulation and wire
- Adhesives, paint, and shaping or cutting tools

Plan the size, joints, and storage
A large spider can be difficult to carry once assembled. In a 2015 Instructables build, creator Rania Peet reported a 17-foot diameter from leg to leg and described detachable legs for transport and storage. That is the span of one creator’s project, not a recommended or tested size.
Before assembling a large frame, check the path from your work area to the display location, including doorways and turns. If you want detachable parts, follow the joint design in the plan you choose. Peet describes leaving leg attachments unglued when detachability was wanted; that detail should not be treated as universal structural advice.

Assemble and finish the spider
- Set the display location and target span. Choose dimensions and a support approach suited to the specific plan, then consider how the finished sections will reach the display area.
- Build the frame or supported legs. Cut and fit the PVC frame, or add wire inside noodles only where the chosen design calls for it. Do not assume a method intended for a smaller decoration will work at a larger scale.
- Form the body using the selected plan. A rigid-frame design may use chicken wire attached to a base; a sculpted design may add foam and surface shaping. Keep the body construction consistent with the tutorial rather than mixing incompatible steps.
- Apply the finish specified for the design. Paint, coverings, and adhesives differ by route. Allow materials to cure or dry as their labels and instructions direct.
- Move, assemble, and secure the decoration at its display site. Use the plan’s assembly details, and choose a setup appropriate to the actual location; the cited projects do not establish a general wind or structural-load rating.
Work safely and account for weather
- Smooth PVC cuts: This Old House advises sanding cut pipe to remove burrs.
- Use PVC cement carefully: Work in a well-ventilated area because the fumes are strong, and let the cement cure according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
- Follow product labels: For foam, adhesives, paint, and other finishing products, use the directions for the specific products selected.
- Do not assume a homemade finish is weatherproof: Peet reported that the fur finish on the 2015 Instructables spider was not weatherproof. The creator said it stayed outside through rain for a while, but recommended indoor storage or covering it when possible. That account is not a weather rating for other finishes or materials.
The cited sources do not establish general wind, rain, UV, flame, or structural-load ratings for homemade giant spiders. Outdoor suitability depends on the particular construction, finish, location, and setup.
