You can make a basic fishing pole from a straight, slightly flexible branch, monofilament line, a hook, and—if useful—a bobber and weight. Tie the line securely near the handle, wrap it along the pole, and secure it near the tip. This fixed-line setup is simple and short-range; it does not work like a rod and reel.
What you need
- Pole stock: A sturdy, fairly straight branch about 5 to 8 feet long that bends slightly without feeling brittle. Bamboo is another option. One Minnesota DNR instructional example uses a green sapling about 4 to 5 feet long and roughly ¾ inch across at the base; those measurements are an option, not a universal requirement.
- Monofilament fishing line: Enough to wrap along the pole and leave a hanging section suitable for your fishing spot.
- Hook: The Missouri Department of Conservation names a No. 6 hook as a useful size for bluegill, bass, and catfish. The Minnesota DNR article lists size 6 or 8 hooks.
- Optional tackle: A bobber or float, bait, and a small sinker if needed. The Minnesota DNR recommends lead-free sinkers because lead can poison people and wildlife.
- For preparation: Sandpaper and, if trimming is needed, suitable cutting tools. Ask an adult to help with pruning shears or a saw.
Use fallen wood where appropriate, or get permission before cutting a living branch. The Missouri Department of Conservation’s fishing-pole guide calls for a sturdy green branch 5 to 8 feet long; Minnesota DNR’s instructions also describe bamboo as an alternative. Neither source provides comparative strength tests, so choose based on what you can use legally and find that is straight, sturdy, and slightly flexible.
How to make the pole
- Choose the branch. Look for a sound pole with no obvious cracks or brittle feel. Its length should suit the place you plan to fish and the distance you need to reach.
- Trim and smooth it. Remove small shoots and leaves. Smooth rough knots or burls with sandpaper so they are less likely to snag line or hands.
- Attach the line at the base. Tie monofilament near the handle end, leaving enough line free to retrieve by hand. Wrap the line up the length of the pole toward the tip, keeping it controlled along the shaft.
- Secure the line near the tip. Tie it off near the tip to help keep it aligned. A base attachment matters: Take Me Fishing cautions against relying only on a tie at the very end, since a large fish could break the stick and leave you without line to retrieve.
- Set the hanging line length. Leave enough line beyond the tip for the bait to sit at the depth you intend to fish. The Missouri guide gives about 10 feet as an example; Take Me Fishing advises leaving several feet depending on water depth. These are examples, not a required length for every location.
- Add the tackle. Tie on the hook, then add a bobber and bait if you want them. A weight is optional when needed to help position the bait.

How to use a stick pole
A stick pole is a fixed-line tool: the line runs along the pole, and you position the bait by moving the pole rather than reeling line in and out. It is suited to simple, short-range fishing where you can reach the water. The cited guides do not quantify the pole’s strength or guarantee catches, so treat the branch as a basic tool rather than a substitute for a conventional rod and reel in every situation.

Use it safely and check local rules
- Smooth rough areas before handling the pole, and get adult assistance when cutting or trimming branches.
- Keep the hook controlled. If practicing a casting motion, do so without a hook near other people.
- Check the fishing rules for your location before you go, including license requirements, seasons, permitted species, size limits, daily catch limits, and tackle restrictions. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service advises first-time anglers to consult state fishing laws for species, size limits, and daily catch limits; see its first-time fishing guide.
- The UK government’s freshwater tackle rules cover England and Wales, where local byelaws also matter. They should not be treated as rules for other countries or regions.
The Missouri Department of Conservation puts the basic idea simply: “You don’t need fancy tackle to catch loads of fish.”
