Here’s how to build one while keeping it comfortable, breathable, and easy to get out of.
What a potato bed is—and why it went viral
The name describes the shape: an opened fitted sheet holds a rounded border of pillows and blankets around a softer, flatter place to lie. A blanket or comforter forms the base, with another layer over the top. The result is a temporary bedding nest for lounging, napping, or sleeping, rather than a permanent change to the bed.

The trend took off on TikTok in late October 2025. The Daily Dot reported that a tutorial had reached 151.6 million views, while Ideal Home reported more than 15 million likes for a tutorial from @secretlifeeee123; platform counts are snapshots and can change (The Daily Dot; Ideal Home). In the 2026 UK Sleep Survey, Dreams UK found that 4% of respondents had tried the trend and 7% were interested—a survey result for its sample, not a measure of all TikTok users (Dreams UK).
Some creators have described a particularly good night’s sleep: @alicekateea posted, “I had the best night’s sleep ever, omg,” on October 29, 2025, as reported by Bustle and Ideal Home. That is an individual testimonial, not evidence that the setup treats sleep problems (Bustle; Ideal Home).

How to make a potato bed
- Clear the bed and lay a fitted sheet upside down, with its elastic edge facing up. This sheet is the shell that helps hold the nest together.
- Arrange pillows around the inside edge to create a rounded border.
- Fold or roll a blanket along the bottom and sides to add softness and help fill out the walls.
- Use extra pillows, blankets, or soft toys to fill gaps, keeping the shape plush but not tightly packed.
- Put a blanket or comforter in the center as the lying surface, then add a separate layer on top.
- Leave a clear, comfortable opening so you can get in and out without climbing over or collapsing the border. Fluff and reposition the sides as needed.
The fitted sheet is the essential structural piece; pillows and blankets control the nest’s height, softness, and stability. A mattress topper or loftier duvet can add cushioning, but neither is necessary.

Keep the nest comfortable, not overheated
How comfortable it feels depends on your body temperature, the room, bedding materials, and personal preference. The National Sleep Foundation says heat-trapping bedding can interfere with sleep and recommends breathable or ventilated bedding. It identifies 65–68°F as an optimal bedroom range for most adults; that is general guidance, not a requirement for every person or room (National Sleep Foundation).

If you tend to sleep hot, consider breathable cotton or linen sheets and use fewer insulating layers. Keep the opening clear and avoid packing the walls so tightly that getting out becomes difficult.

Do not use a potato bed for an infant
This setup is for adults and older children, not infant sleep. NIH’s Safe to Sleep program says an infant’s sleep area should be firm and flat, covered only with a fitted sheet. Pillows, loose blankets, stuffed toys, and other soft bedding can increase risks including suffocation, entrapment, strangulation, and overheating (NIH Safe to Sleep).
