A bristlebot is a small vibrobot made from a toothbrush head, a vibration motor with an off-center weight, and a compatible coin-cell battery. When the motor runs, its vibration travels through the bristles and moves the bot across a surface. You can influence its direction by changing the bristle lean and the balance of its parts, but a simple bristlebot will not steer precisely.

What you need

  • A toothbrush with a head that can serve as the base. If you use a disposable toothbrush, its handle can be removed; have an adult supervise cutting.
  • A small vibration or pager motor with an offset rotating weight.
  • A coin-cell battery compatible with that motor. Motor and battery requirements vary, so check that the cell type and voltage suit your motor.
  • Double-sided foam tape or another secure way to mount the parts.
  • A way to make and hold electrical contact between the motor leads and battery.

Allow the offset weight to spin freely, and keep exposed leads from touching each other. The build time varies; Science Buddies lists 30–45 minutes for both active and total project time for its activity, an estimate rather than a universal build time.

How to make the bristlebot

  1. Prepare the base. Use the toothbrush head as the platform. If removing a disposable toothbrush handle, ask an adult to supervise the cutting.
  2. Mount the motor. Secure the vibration motor to the toothbrush head with foam tape or another firm mounting method. Leave enough clearance for the offset weight to rotate without hitting the toothbrush or tape.
  3. Attach the battery. Secure the compatible coin cell near the motor. Keep both components firmly mounted, with their positions balanced over the bristles.
  4. Complete the circuit. Connect one motor lead to each battery contact using a reliable contact method. The motor needs a complete circuit to run; make sure the exposed leads do not touch one another.
  5. Test it on a clear surface. Check that the weight spins freely and that the bristles meet the surface. If the bot does not vibrate, disconnect the circuit before adjusting the contacts.

Why a toothbrush bristlebot moves

The motor spins its off-center weight, creating vibration. The toothbrush transfers that vibration through its bristles to the surface, which makes the bot move. The Ontario Science Centre describes it this way: “The vibration travels through the toothbrush bristles, making your bug travel around.”

The bristles also affect the bot’s movement. Their lean can give the bot a directional bias, while motor and battery placement affect balance and whether it tracks straight. These are tuning variables, not precise steering controls.

How to tune its direction—and try to make it go faster

Change the bristle lean

Try orienting the bristles so they lean in the direction you want the bot to travel. Guides describe bristle lean as a way to bias movement or encourage forward motion, but the result depends on the particular toothbrush and build.

Adjust balance and placement

If the bot tips over or spins unpredictably, reposition the motor or battery so the assembly sits more evenly over the bristles. Test one adjustment at a time and watch how the bot moves.

Check clearance and contact

Make sure the eccentric weight has room to spin, the parts remain secure, and the bristles contact the surface. A blocked weight or poor balance can interfere with movement.

There is no source-supported universal setting that makes every bristlebot fastest. The basic build guidance describes qualitative adjustments rather than controlled speed comparisons, so treat changes as experiments rather than guaranteed upgrades.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The motor does not vibrate: Check that both leads contact the battery and the circuit is closed. Confirm that the offset weight is not blocked.
  • The bot starts, then stops: Check for a loose lead or a connection that has opened.
  • Opposite leads touch: Separate the exposed leads. Contact between them can short the circuit, drain the battery, and stop the motor.
  • The bot tips or spins unpredictably: Reposition the motor or battery and check how the bristles meet the surface.
  • You want to switch it off: Open one connection in the circuit.

Keep coin cells and tools safe

Keep coin-cell batteries and small parts away from young children. STEM Detective Lab’s BrushBot instructions warn: “There have been multiple reports of life-threatening injuries to children who have swallowed coin cell batteries.” Have an adult supervise cutting the toothbrush handle, soldering, or using hot glue.
