For a quick DIY life-size board game, lay out a path on a clear floor with painter’s tape, add a die, and make players the game pieces. A simple version can use ten spaces, with marked spaces that send players forward or backward. If you want a sturdier project instead, build a giant wooden block game; if you prefer ready-made rules and components, choose an oversized boxed game.
Choose the kind of giant game you want to make
“Big-as-life” can mean a custom path across the floor, oversized pieces for a familiar game, or a large-format game supplied with its own board. The right option depends on your available space, storage, tools, and whether you want to invent rules or use an existing game.

| Option | Effort and supplies | Play and storage |
|---|---|---|
| Taped floor path | Mark spaces with painter’s tape; use dice. No lumber or powered tools are needed for the described layout. | Custom rules and path; tape layout is temporary and uses clear floor space. |
| Giant wooden block game | Cut and sand 54 pieces from six 2×4×8-foot hardwood boards; the project names a miter saw and orbital sander. | A separate block-stacking game, not a path board. Loose pieces can be stored in the optional carrying case described by the plan. |
| Ready-made oversized game | Use the supplied board and components rather than building a custom path. | Familiar rules; storage depends on the game and its packaging. |
Make a custom life-size board with painter’s tape
This is the simplest way to turn a game idea into a floor activity. KiwiCo’s example uses ten spaces, painter’s tape, and dice. Squares mark ordinary spaces, a diamond tells a player to advance, and triangles send a player back. Players start at the beginning, roll, move by the result, and the first to reach the finish wins in that example.

Choose a floor with enough room for the whole path and for players to move safely around it.
- Mark the route. Use painter’s tape to make a start, a sequence of spaces, and a finish. The ten-space layout is an example, not a required standard.
- Make special spaces obvious. Use distinct shapes or colors, and decide what each one means before play.
- Explain the rules. Tell players how to roll, move, handle special spaces, and win. Keep the rules visible or repeat them before the first turn.
- Play as the pieces. Players move themselves from space to space according to the roll and the marked rules.
KiwiCo describes its activity as taking 30 minutes to one hour and being for ages 3–11; those are the publisher’s descriptors, not a guarantee that every group will finish within that time or suit every child in that age range. See the KiwiCo Life Size Board Game tutorial for its example layout.

Build a giant wooden block game
Harbor Freight’s giant block project is a different kind of game: players stack and remove oversized wooden blocks rather than walking a path. Its plan calls for six 2×4×8-foot hardwood boards, cut into 54 pieces measuring 10.5 inches each. Sand the edges; the plan also describes an optional carrying case.
- Review the full plan and tool requirements. The project names a miter saw and orbital sander. If you do not have access to suitable tools, consider borrowing or renting them, or choose the tape-based layout instead.
- Cut the lumber to the specified dimensions. To reproduce the project, follow Harbor Freight’s plan for making 54 pieces from six boards.
- Sand the edges. The instructions call for sanding the blocks before play.
- Make the optional carrying case if useful. It provides a storage route for the loose pieces.
For a separate way to make an oversized die, Harbor Freight’s Yard Dice “Yardzee” project uses a 4×4 cedar post to make at least five dice, then sands the edges and corners, paints pips, and applies outdoor varnish. The page advises wearing proper safety equipment while handling tools. These dice are optional inspiration for outdoor play; they are not required for the taped floor-board activity, which calls for ordinary dice.

Plan the space and play before setting up
Measure the available floor or yard area and decide how many people will play. A taped route needs enough room for the path and for players to stand or move without crowding. For any oversized game, consider where pieces will go between sessions: tape marks are temporary, wooden blocks need storage, and a mat or modular board needs room to put away.
