Mount the birdhouse on a freestanding pole or post whenever possible. It keeps fasteners and straps off the trunk and makes the box easier to reach for cleaning and maintenance. If a pole will not work, secure the box with a strap or tie-down instead of a nail or screw, and check it periodically so it does not tighten or grow into the tree.

Mount the birdhouse on a pole or post

Keep height advice specific to the target bird
Oklahoma State University Extension’s plans for eastern bluebirds call for the house to be mounted on a pole four to six feet above the ground. That measurement applies to the bluebird plans; it is not a universal height for every birdhouse or species.

If the box must be attached to a tree
Use a strap or tie-down around the trunk rather than driving a nail or screw into it. University of Illinois Extension forestry specialist Jay Hayek suggests “ratchet straps, bungie cords, rubber tie downs, or industrial plastic zip ties.” These avoid a puncture fastener, but they still contact the bark and require attention.
- Wrap the strap or tie around the trunk and secure the birdhouse without driving a fastener into the tree.
- Inspect the attachment periodically. If it is tightening or becoming embedded as the tree grows, change or adjust it.
- Continue checking over time. The cited guidance does not prescribe a universal inspection or replacement schedule, so no fixed interval can be given.
A strap is not a set-and-forget solution: the important safeguard is monitoring and changing it as needed. The sources do not establish a universally suitable strap width, material lifespan, or wind-load capacity.

If a nail or screw is already in the tree
Do not automatically pull it out. University of Illinois Extension says removal may not be necessary and, depending on the fastener’s size, can sometimes make the problem worse. The cited guidance does not give a universal removal rule, so consider the specific fastener rather than treating removal as an automatic fix.
