Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDuring colder months, regularly clear leaves and other debris from your deck, remove snow with a shovel that has no metal edge, and use only cleaning products and ice melt approved for your exact decking. Those simple steps help limit debris buildup, surface damage and residue—but care instructions differ by brand and product generation.
Keep leaves and other debris from sitting on the deck
Leaves, pollen, dirt and other debris can collect moisture and contribute to mold or staining if they remain on the surface. Sweep or remove debris regularly, and clear dirt and mud promptly. Make sure the spaces between boards remain open so water can drain rather than leave the deck persistently damp.

For its high-performance decking, Trex recommends cleaning twice a year—in spring and fall—to prevent pollen and other debris from building up and supporting mold growth. That is Trex guidance for the products covered by its care page, not a universal schedule for every deck. TimberTech likewise advises prompt removal of dirt, mud, construction dust and other debris. Follow the guidance for your installed product: Trex care and cleaning and TimberTech care and cleaning.

Remove snow with a shovel that will not scrape the surface
Choose a plastic snow shovel without a metal edge, and push snow carefully rather than scraping the boards. Trex says a plastic shovel may be used but warns that a metal snow shovel may scratch the deck. TimberTech warns against metal shovels and plastic shovels with a metal leading edge because they can damage its deck or porch surfaces.

- EASY TO APPLY AND MAINTAIN: Low odor formula may be applied using sprayer, roller or brush onto the wood's surface; no sanding or stripping required for reapplication
These instructions are product-specific. Before clearing snow, check the care guide for the decking actually installed, including any instructions for the board or porch product. See the Trex guide and TimberTech guide.
Check the deck maker’s ice-melt instructions before treating ice
There is no single ice melt that can be assumed safe for every composite deck. The cited manufacturers differ on rock salt:

- Trex: Its guidance permits calcium chloride or rock salt for melting ice and snow on Trex decking. It advises rinsing residue off when practical. Consult the care guide and FAQ for the applicable product.
- TimberTech: Its care guidance says most products containing calcium chloride can be used without damage, although they may leave white residue. It advises against rock salt and other abrasive ice melts. Check TimberTech’s care guidance.
Use only a product allowed by your decking’s instructions. If the guidance calls for rinsing residue, do so when conditions safely allow; do not create a new ice hazard by rinsing in freezing conditions.
Match the cleaner and washing method to the product
“Composite” is not a complete care instruction. Trex distinguishes high-performance decking from earlier generations and gives different cleaning and pressure-washer directions. TimberTech’s guidance distinguishes current composite products from Advanced PVC and other specialty or discontinued products; its cleaner recommendations are not interchangeable across all of them.

Before using a deck cleaner, stiff brush or pressure washer, find the exact product and generation in its manufacturer’s care guide. Use only the cleaner and method allowed there, and follow any directions about rinsing. A method approved for one line or brand should not be assumed safe for another. See Trex’s care and cleaning instructions and TimberTech’s product-specific guidance.

- Identify the decking. Check the product label, project records or manufacturer information so you can find the care instructions for the installed brand and product generation.
- Clear debris regularly. Sweep away leaves and other buildup; remove dirt and mud promptly, and keep board gaps clear for drainage.
- Clear snow gently. Use a plastic shovel with no metal edge, unless the installed product’s instructions specify otherwise.
- Verify ice-melt compatibility. Read the deck maker’s guidance before applying any deicer, particularly if considering rock salt.
- Clean residue and wash appropriately. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for rinsing, cleaner, brush and washing pressure, and wait until rinsing can be done safely.
Manufacturer instructions are product-specific and can change. The guidance cited here is from official Trex and TimberTech care pages accessed October 13, 2026; confirm the current instructions for your exact deck before applying a cleaner or deicer.
