Maintain a floating dock by following its maker’s instructions, inspecting the deck, frame, connections, floats, accessories, and moorings, and fixing compatible hardware problems before they worsen. A loose bolt may be a straightforward repair; unusual movement, uneven flotation, damaged structural parts, or underwater mooring problems call for closer assessment and may require a qualified marine repair provider. Before working in the water, check the rules for the dock’s location and the work involved.
What to inspect on a floating dock
Walk the dock systematically rather than checking only the boards underfoot. The goal is to spot changes: missing or loose parts, cracks, corrosion, misalignment, unusual movement, or a change in how the dock floats. Record defects and their locations so you can tell whether they are stable or getting worse. Use the dock maker’s manual for the inspection points and specifications that apply to your particular system.

Deck and walking surface
- Look for cracked, split, loose, or damaged decking and boards.
- Check for raised edges, gaps, or other damage that could catch a foot or indicate a loose connection.
- Look for dirt or buildup that may need cleaning, using a method approved for the deck material.
Frame, joints, and connections
Inspect the frame and its joints, including corners and welded or bolted areas. Check for cracks, weakness, corrosion, loose bolts, and signs that sections have shifted out of alignment. Multinautic specifically calls attention to frame joints, corners, pile clamps, and welded or bolted areas on its systems; these are useful examples, not a universal engineering checklist.
Where the dock is made of connected sections, inspect the connections between them. Also check the gangway attachment and the points where handrails or other accessories attach. The EZ Dock owner manual calls for checking couplers, connections, gangways, handrails, and attachments to confirm they are securely connected.

Cleats, ladders, rails, and other accessories
Check cleats, ladders, rails, and other installed accessories for looseness, damage, and secure attachment. A part that moves when it should be fixed may need its hardware tightened or replaced, but do not assume the visible fastener is the only issue. If the attachment point or supporting frame is cracked, corroded, or unstable, treat it as a structural concern rather than a simple tightening task.
Floats and mooring components
Inspect accessible floats and anchoring components for damage, wear, corrosion, and looseness. Mooring systems can include chains, shackles, swivels, tensioners, anchors, and fittings; not every dock uses the same arrangement. PAGEO Marine identifies these components, along with floats, decking, and fittings, as areas that may need inspection or repair. Use the dock’s design and manual to identify what is present and what can be safely examined.
Pay attention to changed behavior as well as visible defects. A dock that moves more than usual, appears unstable, or sits unevenly deserves closer investigation. Those symptoms do not identify a single cause: the issue could involve an accessible connection, a float, or an anchoring component. Do not guess at a repair when the source of the movement is unclear.
How often to inspect and what should trigger an extra check
There is no universal inspection interval established for every floating dock. Follow the schedule in the owner’s manual, then add a visual check when conditions or the dock’s behavior give you a reason to look more closely. AccuDock recommends routine visual inspection of hardware and says to tighten it as needed; its guidance suggests checking yearly or when a visual inspection indicates a need. That is AccuDock guidance, not a general standard for all docks.

Consider an additional inspection after storm exposure or unusual sea conditions, or when you notice increased movement, loose or heavily corroded fittings, or a mooring check that is overdue. These warning signs are identified by a marine maintenance provider; they are prompts for investigation, not a substitute for the dock maker’s inspection plan.
- Routine check: Look over the deck, frame, connections, attachments, accessible floats, and visible anchoring components.
- Condition-based check: Inspect when you notice movement, instability, uneven flotation, corrosion, looseness, or damage.
- After unusual conditions: Recheck the dock after storms or unusual water conditions, paying particular attention to connections and moorings.
How to clean a floating dock
Choose a cleaning method for the actual deck, frame, and float materials on your dock. A technique that is suitable for one surface may not be suitable for another, so check the owner’s manual before using cleaners or powered equipment.
- Remove loose debris. Use a brush or broom if the product instructions allow it. EZ Dock recommends a brush or broom as part of its cleaning guidance.
- Rinse the surface. EZ Dock recommends water, while AccuDock says its PVC decking can usually be rinsed with a hose. Confirm that this applies to your model and material.
- Address stubborn dirt with an approved cleaner. EZ Dock recommends a mild, environmentally friendly cleaner. AccuDock suggests an eco-friendly detergent and brush for more stubborn dirt on its PVC decking.
- Use powered washing only if the manufacturer permits it. EZ Dock’s manual says a power washer may be used. Do not extend that permission to a different dock, material, or surface without checking its instructions.
Cleaning is also a useful opportunity to notice cracks, loose fittings, or changes in the surface. Do not use an unapproved cleaning chemical or assume that a method recommended for PVC is appropriate for wood, aluminum, or another material.

| Underwater anchoring or mooring concern | Identify the affected system and check applicable local requirements before in-water work. | Use a qualified provider when the work is difficult to access or assess safely. |
This table is a triage aid, not a substitute for model-specific procedures. A marine provider’s listed repair scope includes mooring chains and fittings, anchoring, floats, support structures, decking, and cleats, but there is no single repair method that applies to every dock design.
Replacing dock hardware without creating a new problem
Use compatible replacement hardware, not merely a fastener that appears to fit. Confirm the dock model or system, manufacturer approval, dimensions, and specified stainless-steel grade. Consider the exposure conditions, including whether the dock is in freshwater or saltwater, but do not use exposure alone to override the maker’s specification.
Manufacturer guidance demonstrates why there is no single grade to prescribe for all docks: AccuDock specifies stainless steel 304 hardware for its own products, while Aqua Docks Hawaii Ka specifies stainless steel 316 hardware for its aluminum floating dock. These are product-specific instructions, not interchangeable universal recommendations. Check the manual or ask the manufacturer or supplier for the exact replacement part.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Identify the part and location. Note where the hardware is installed and what it connects. Check the dock’s parts information or manual.
- Verify the specification. Confirm dimensions, material or grade, and any model-specific approval before buying a replacement.
- Inspect the surrounding material. If the frame, connector, or attachment point is cracked, badly corroded, or deformed, replacing the fastener alone may not address the problem.
- Install according to the dock maker’s instructions. Do not improvise with a generic hardware kit or assume different docks use equivalent parts.
- Recheck the connection. Confirm that the repaired connection is secure and observe whether the original movement or looseness returns.
A compatible stainless-steel fastener or connector can be a useful replacement, but compatibility must be established for the specific dock. The available guidance does not establish a universal hardware kit, price, or service life.

When movement or flotation changes
A change in movement or flotation is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Compare the dock’s current position and behavior with what is normal for that installation. Look for visible loose connections, damaged floats, corrosion, or signs of movement at accessible anchoring points. If the dock sits unevenly or remains unstable, do not assume that tightening a visible fitting will solve it.
Some mooring components may be underwater or difficult to reach. A service provider can inspect or repair mooring chains and fittings, anchors, floats, support structures, and other parts, but the appropriate method depends on the dock’s design and the defect. If the problem could involve structural damage, inaccessible anchoring, or float integrity, consult the maker or a qualified marine repair provider rather than attempting a repair by guesswork.
Preparing a floating dock for ice, winter, or severe weather
Winter procedures depend on the dock design and the site’s exposure. Follow the owner’s manual rather than applying one manufacturer’s ice guidance to all floating docks. The EZ Dock manual distinguishes ordinary ice pressure from shoreline pressure, wind-blown ice, or ice flows. It says normal ice pressure should not harm its product because its floats are high enough; in the other listed ice conditions, it advises removing the dock from or disconnecting it from its moorings. It also advises removing pipes or piles in those conditions to avoid bending from ice pressure. This is EZ Dock-specific guidance, not a guarantee for other products or installations.
For another model, use its own instructions to decide whether the dock should remain installed, be disconnected, or be removed. AccuDock’s support materials include model-specific winterizing and hurricane-preparation resources, which underscores the need to use the procedures for the installed system rather than assuming that a general rule covers all docks.

Rules to check before repairing a dock in the water
Requirements depend on the dock’s location and the proposed work. Before repairing below the ordinary high-water mark, check current local, regional, and national requirements. In-water work may disturb sediment or aquatic habitat, and regulations may set conditions, require notification, or call for further project review. Canadian guidance is a jurisdiction-specific example, not global law.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada publishes codes of practice for in-water structure maintenance and repair and for residential boathouses, docks, and moorings. Its December 2025 In-water structures: Maintenance and repair code describes measures that include limiting the duration of in-water work, using existing access routes, minimizing disturbance to aquatic habitat, keeping machinery clean and free of leaks, managing sediment, preventing paint, solvents, fuel, and other harmful materials from entering the water, and disposing of waste on land. The code includes conditions and a notification before starting when using that code.
The same Canadian guidance says work that cannot meet the code’s conditions and measures may require project review, and that other federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal requirements continue to apply. Whether the code applies depends on the project and location. Check the current code and relevant local rules, or consult a qualified environmental professional when scope or applicability is uncertain. Do not assume that compliance with one code replaces other permits or requirements.
