A paver block road stays safer and more stable when its joints are kept free of soil, filled with suitable jointing material, and checked for movement or settlement. Sweep away debris, remove weeds before they seed, clean without stripping the joints, replace lost sand, and investigate damaged or uneven blocks rather than treating weeds as the only problem.

These practices greatly reduce weed establishment but cannot make a paved surface permanently weed-free. Advice written for residential hardscape must be adapted to the pavement design, traffic loading, drainage and specifications of a public or heavily used road.

Why weeds appear between paver blocks

Most weeds do not grow through an intact paving block. They establish in the joints, where windblown seeds can lodge in accumulated leaves, soil, moss and organic fragments. Belgard describes the mechanism directly: “Weeds can germinate between pavers from windblown seeds lodged in the joints.” See the Belgard Paver Maintenance and Product Installation Guide (2025).

Joint material has two maintenance roles. It helps lock adjacent blocks together and reduces the open space in which seeds, water and soil can collect. Wind, runoff, traffic vibration, steep grades and cleaning can remove that material. Once a joint is low or empty, a small plant can establish more easily; pulling it out may then remove still more sand.

Weed control is therefore a cycle rather than a one-time treatment:

  • Keep organic debris from becoming growing medium.
  • Remove plants while roots are small and before seed heads form.
  • Restore jointing material disturbed by roots, brushing or washing.
  • Correct settlement, drainage or edge movement that creates wide, open joints.

Routine care reduces the number of seeds that survive, but airborne seed will continue to arrive. A maintenance plan must include inspection and follow-up, not just an annual chemical application.

Inspect the road before choosing a treatment

Start with a walk-through in good light, preferably after sweeping. Record the location and extent of each defect so that a local weed problem is not confused with a structural one.

Check the joints

  • Look for joints that are visibly lower than adjacent joints, empty, washed out or filled with soil.
  • Note moss, grass, broadleaf weeds, seedlings and any plants with developing seed heads.
  • Check whether roots have lifted blocks or forced joints wider.

Check the blocks and pavement shape

  • Identify cracked, spalled, rocking or missing units.
  • Look for depressions, ruts, ridges, ponding water and abrupt changes in level.
  • Inspect edges, kerbs and restraints for movement that could allow blocks to spread.

Check drainage and sources of debris

Downspouts, eroding shoulders, unsealed edges, overhanging vegetation and sweeping routes can repeatedly deliver soil to the same joints. If the same area fills with sediment after every storm, removing weeds without addressing that source will produce only temporary improvement.

A practical maintenance sequence

Use the following sequence for ordinary maintenance. Work in a small area at a time so that removed weeds, sand and wash water do not migrate into cleaned joints.

  1. Sweep and inspect

Use a stiff-bristle broom to remove leaves, grass clippings, loose soil and other debris from the surface and joints. Sweep away from drains and collect the material rather than pushing it into the next section. Once the surface is clear, inspect joint depth, weeds, damaged units and uneven areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Remove weeds while they are small

Hand-pull small plants, taking care to remove the crown and as much root as practical. A block-paving brush is useful for moss and shallow growth; a narrow block-paving knife can loosen roots in a joint or crevice. Cornell University Extension advises removing weeds before seed heads form to reduce the amount of seed returned to the pavement. Its hard-surface guidance is available at Cornell University’s Hard Surfaces weed-management page.

Bag or otherwise contain pulled plants if they carry mature seed heads. If a root pulls out joint sand, leave the joint clean and plan to refill it after all removal is complete.

  3. Clean without scouring the joints

For ordinary dirt, use the broom and a controlled hose rinse. Direct water so that loosened soil flows to a collection point rather than into open joints or a surface-water drain. Avoid aggressive pressure washing as a first response: high-pressure water can remove joint sand and may expose aggregate on the blocks. Belgard’s maintenance guidance is at Belgard Hardscape Maintenance and Care; additional concrete-paver cleaning guidance is provided by Mutual Materials and Thomas Armstrong.

If a pressure washer is genuinely needed for an oil mark, embedded dirt or a large maintenance project, use equipment and technique appropriate to the paver system. Belgard says high-pressure cleaning is generally for contractors experienced with paver cleaning and joint-sand replacement. Keep the nozzle and force from scouring the joints, test an inconspicuous area, and inspect the entire treated section afterward.

  4. Refill depleted joints

After the surface is dry and free of loose debris, place jointing material suited to the paver type, joint width and site conditions. Brush it diagonally across the blocks so it falls into the joints rather than being swept back out. Follow the selected product’s installation directions for moisture, compaction, curing and cleanup.

Belgard’s 2025 installation guide identifies joint-sand loss of more than 1/2 inch, measured from the bottom of the chamfer, as requiring replacement. That measurement is a product-guide criterion, not a universal engineering tolerance for every road. Recheck low areas after rain and traffic have had an opportunity to settle the material.

Polymeric jointing sand can be considered where the paver system and project conditions permit it. Select it for the actual joint dimensions and drainage conditions, and follow its manufacturer’s instructions. It can reduce movement and erosion when correctly installed, but it is not a guarantee that weeds will never return.

  5. Use chemical control only when justified

Mechanical removal and joint upkeep should be the default for isolated growth. A herbicide may be considered for extensive or inaccessible growth only after confirming that the product is legal for the location and labelled for the intended surface and weed. Read the complete label, including dilution, personal-protective equipment, re-entry, weather and disposal directions.

Manufacturer guidance warns that spray or runoff can injure nearby vegetation. Choose only a product whose label and local rules permit the use, prevent drift onto desirable plants, and protect drains, streams and other water. Thomas Armstrong recommends using weed killers sparingly and according to the manufacturer’s instructions. No single product is universally suitable without the site’s jurisdiction, weed species and drainage information.

  6. Repair displacement or damage

Replace missing or broken blocks and investigate settled areas instead of filling the depression with extra sand. A local defect may result from a failed base, poor drainage, inadequate edge restraint, utility work or loading beyond the original design. If the cause remains, the repaired area will move again and recreate open joints.

Interlocking concrete pavers can often be lifted, the underlying material corrected and the units reinstated. The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association Operation and Maintenance Guide discusses removing and reinstalling pavers in uneven areas. The Indian Roads Congress Guidelines for the Use of Interlocking Concrete Block Pavement describes replacing damaged blocks and raising settled sections. These are general repair concepts; a heavily trafficked road may require an engineer or road authority to specify the repair.

How much joint sand should be replaced?

Do not judge the need for refill solely by whether weeds are visible. Check the joint profile after sweeping and cleaning. Belgard’s stated trigger is loss greater than 1/2 inch from the bottom of the chamfer. Measure in several representative locations because runoff and wheel paths can deplete joints unevenly.

The Indian Roads Congress guideline recommends checking joint sand about one week after laying and continuing checks for two to three months until the level stabilizes. That recommendation appears in a 2004 guideline and is not a current universal standard for every jurisdiction, pavement design or repair. For an existing road, use the project specification and the jointing-product instructions as the controlling documents.

When refilling:

  • Remove weeds, loose soil and standing water first.
  • Use clean, compatible jointing material; do not mix products casually.
  • Brush the material into every joint and compact or vibrate only as the product instructions allow.
  • Remove excess material from the block faces before wetting or activating a polymeric product.
  • Reinspect after the first significant rain and after traffic resumes.

Choosing a weed-control and cleaning method

The best method depends on whether the objective is preventing new seedlings, removing established growth, preserving joint sand, and protecting adjacent plants and water. This comparison summarizes the practical trade-offs.

Method Primary use Effect on joint sand Best fit Main cautions
Hand pulling Small weeds and seedlings Low if roots are loosened carefully; refill any disturbed joint Localized growth and routine patrols Remove the crown and roots; contain plants with seed heads
Block-paving brush Moss and shallow growth Low to moderate, depending on pressure and joint condition Regular mechanical maintenance Do not brush aggressively through already empty joints
Block-paving knife Roots in narrow joints and crevices Moderate where roots pull out sand Precise work around individual blocks Work carefully to avoid chipping edges or widening joints
Broom and controlled hose Leaves, soil and ordinary dirt Low when water is controlled Routine cleaning and prevention Collect sediment; do not wash it into joints or drains
Pressure washer Stubborn surface contamination Potentially high Specialist cleaning when gentler methods fail Can remove sand or expose aggregate; joint refill may be required
Herbicide Extensive or inaccessible growth Usually little direct sand removal, but runoff is a concern Only where label and local rules permit Protect desirable plants, people, animals and water; follow the label
Polymeric jointing sand Replacement jointing material where compatible Can improve resistance to erosion when correctly installed Projects with suitable joints, drainage and installation conditions Not a permanent weed-proofing guarantee; follow product directions

Cleaning and sealing: what is and is not universal

Cleaning intervals depend on traffic, pollution, shade, leaf fall and the paver system. Belgard’s product-care page recommends cleaning and resealing every three to five years and says not to seal more than once in three years, with a maximum of two applications. Those are Belgard product-care recommendations, not universal intervals for every paver block road.

Sealer does not replace sound jointing material or drainage. Before any sealer is considered, remove weeds, correct low joints, clean the surface and verify that the product is approved for the blocks and jointing system. Applying a coating over damp contamination or unstable joints can trap problems and make later repairs harder. Obtain the installed system’s technical data and follow the road owner’s specification.

Road-specific issues that deserve professional review

A driveway or pedestrian patio can tolerate maintenance methods that are unsuitable for a bus route, industrial access road or public highway. Escalate the assessment when any of the following is present:

  • Repeated settlement, rutting or ponding after local repairs.
  • Frequent heavy trucks, buses, forklifts or braking and turning loads.
  • Loss of edge restraint or spreading over a long length.
  • Blocked or failing drainage, erosion at the shoulder, or washout beneath the pavement.
  • Large areas of missing joint material after a storm or utility excavation.
  • Uncertainty about accessible-route tolerances, traffic management or public liability.

Have the pavement designer, qualified contractor or road authority verify the base, bedding layer, jointing specification, drainage and loading before reconstructing a distressed section. A manufacturer maintenance page is useful for product care, but it is not a substitute for the installed pavement design or local road standard.

Seasonal and event-based checks

Use events rather than arbitrary calendar promises to trigger inspections:

  • After leaf fall or grass cutting: sweep before organic material decomposes in the joints.
  • After intense rain or snowmelt: look for washed-out joints, sediment fans, exposed bedding and new ponding.
  • After pressure washing or other deep cleaning: measure joint levels and refill material that was removed.
  • During the growing season: remove plants before seed heads mature.
  • After utility work or unusual loading: inspect for rocking blocks, widened joints and settlement.

Keep a simple log with the date, area inspected, joint condition, defects found, material added and follow-up required. Consistent records help reveal whether a location has a recurring drainage or structural cause.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely contributors Corrective response
Weeds return weeks after removal Seed-laden debris remains, joints are low, or nearby vegetation continually sheds seed Sweep and collect debris, remove plants before seed set, inspect joint depth and refill compatible material
Sand disappears after every wash Excessive water pressure, an uncontrolled hose stream, runoff or poor joint stability Change the cleaning method, control drainage, then replace the lost jointing material
Moss covers shaded joints Persistent moisture, shade and organic deposits Brush mechanically, remove the moisture source where feasible, improve debris removal and refill disturbed joints
One patch keeps sinking Base failure, leaking service, poor compaction, drainage or repeated heavy loading Lift the affected blocks, diagnose the supporting layers and repair the cause before reinstatement
Blocks spread at the edge Damaged or missing edge restraint, lateral traffic or inadequate confinement Inspect and repair the restraint and review loading; do not rely on extra sand alone
Spray damages nearby plants Drift, runoff or a product not labelled for the site Stop further application, follow the product label and local reporting or environmental requirements, and use mechanical control where practicable

Tools and materials checklist

  • Stiff-bristle broom and collection shovel or pan.
  • Block-paving brush and narrow joint knife.
  • Gloves, eye protection and other personal protection appropriate to the task.
  • Clean, compatible jointing material selected for the paver system.
  • Hose with controllable flow; avoid uncontrolled high-pressure cleaning.
  • Measuring rule or depth gauge for checking joint-sand loss.
  • Barrier or warning signs where cleaning or repairs affect traffic.
  • Product instructions and the applicable road or pavement specification.

Completion check

Before reopening a maintained section, confirm that the blocks are stable and level, joints are filled to the specified profile, excess sand or cleaner has been removed from the surface, drains are clear, and no weed roots or loose debris remain. Walk the area for trip hazards and check that water can follow its intended drainage path. Schedule a follow-up inspection after weather or traffic has tested the work, particularly where joints were substantially refilled or blocks were reinstated.
