First identify the head and drive, fit the correct tool fully, and apply controlled force. If it still will not move, match the next step to the likely cause—corrosion, a stubborn screw, or a tool that is too small—rather than simply forcing it harder.
Identify the fastener and loosening direction
Check the fastener’s head or drive and choose a correctly sized driver, bit, or socket. Most screws, bolts, and nuts use conventional right-hand threads and loosen counterclockwise. Some specialized fasteners have left-hand threads and loosen clockwise; check the equipment instructions or markings if the direction is uncertain. The University of Hawaiʻi’s threaded fastener and tool guidance explains the conventional direction and tool-fit basics.
Resistance alone does not tell you why a fastener is stuck. A poor-fitting tool, rusted threads, threadlocker, overtightening, or a fastener that needs more capacity than the tool provides can call for different approaches. Do not assume that more force is the answer.
Prepare the tool and work area
- Stabilize the work when appropriate and keep the driver or wrench aligned with the fastener.
- Use the correct size and type of bit or socket, seated fully. A loose or mismatched fit can round or deform the head.
- Wear eye and hand protection when the task presents flying debris or sharp-edge risks.
- For powered impact tools, use bits and sockets specifically rated for impact use. Ordinary accessories may not be suitable.
Begin with controlled hand force. If the head starts to deform, the fastener or surrounding material appears at risk, or the work is safety-critical, stop rather than escalating force. Tool and equipment instructions take precedence; the available guidance does not establish one safe torque limit for every application.

Choose a method for the cause
Rusted threads: use penetrating oil
Apply an appropriate penetrating oil to the rusted threaded area and let it work for the time and in the manner specified on the product label. Then retry with the correctly sized hand tool. Product directions and safety information control; there is no universal soak time or guarantee that penetrant will free the fastener. The University of Hawaiʻi guidance covers penetrant use, while CRC’s rusted-bolt guidance discusses additional methods with context-specific cautions.
Stubborn screw: consider a manual impact driver
A manual impact driver combines a hammer strike with rotational force. Fit the matching bit, set the tool to turn in the loosening direction, keep it aligned, and strike it only as its maker directs. It can be useful when a screw resists an ordinary hand driver, but it is not a remedy for a badly damaged head or an unsafe setup.

Larger nut or bolt: match tool capacity to the fastener
An impact driver is generally intended for smaller screws and bolts, while an impact wrench is designed for larger nuts and bolts. A small impact tool may not free seized automotive lug nuts. Depending on the fastener and application, a suitably sized impact wrench or breaker bar may be needed. For vehicle wheel work, follow the vehicle maker’s lifting and wheel-service procedure. The tool-capacity guidance is not a complete wheel-changing procedure.
Heat: specialized escalation, not a general fix
Some rusted-bolt guidance discusses heat, but it can damage nearby materials and create serious hazards around flammable penetrants. Do not apply heat as a routine next step. Consult equipment and product makers, and avoid heat if the assembly or its surroundings make it unsafe. CRC’s guidance is context-specific, not a universal heat procedure.

Choose among tools by fastener size and drive, access, corrosion or seizure, tool capacity, accessory compatibility, and the risk to surrounding materials. Available manufacturer and educational sources support these decision factors, but do not provide a neutral head-to-head tool test.
When to stop
- The tool slips, the head begins to deform, or the fastener is visibly worsening.
- More force could damage the workpiece, nearby components, or a safety-critical assembly.
- You are unsure about the thread direction, the equipment’s service procedure, or whether a method such as heat is safe in that location.
At that point, pause and check the equipment maker’s service instructions or consult a qualified professional. Do not treat specialized hydraulic-wrench figures or procedures as general home-repair limits; Enerpac’s nut-and-bolt loosening information applies to its specialized equipment and context.
