Before cutting, drilling or breaking into a bathroom floor, identify whether radiant-heating pipes are embedded in the concrete slab. The method shown in the Ask the Builder video is to view the slab with a thermal-imaging camera attached to a smartphone. Tim Carter demonstrates using that type of camera to locate radiant heat pipes by seeing the heat pattern associated with them.
That demonstration is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every pipe will be visible. The page names no camera model, accuracy figure, operating condition or confirmation procedure. Treat the thermal image as information for planning and verification, not as permission to cut into the slab without an appropriate construction decision.

The video page identifies a specific situation: radiant heat pipes installed in a concrete slab during a bathroom remodel. Tim Carter uses a thermal-imaging camera connected to a smartphone to find the pipe locations before work proceeds.
A thermal camera does not show the pipe as a conventional X-ray image. It displays temperature differences at the surface. Where heat from an operating radiant system reaches the slab surface, the resulting pattern may outline the route of a pipe. The demonstration therefore addresses a practical remodeling question: can a camera help you map the heated areas before you disturb the floor?

Why pipe location matters before demolition
Radiant tubing is concealed inside the floor assembly. A saw cut, anchor hole, plumbing penetration or other invasive work placed over a tube can damage the heating circuit and create a difficult repair. Knowing where the tubes run lets a remodeler place cuts and penetrations away from the mapped areas or reconsider the proposed work.

A marked-up floor plan or photograph gives the crew a record of the suspected routes before tile, underlayment or fixtures are removed. Keep that record with the project documents rather than relying on memory after the floor is covered again.
A cautious workflow for using thermal imaging
The following workflow explains how to use the video’s idea responsibly. It separates what the demonstration establishes from the decisions that still require project-specific judgment.

- Define the area to be disturbed. Mark the proposed demolition, new plumbing penetrations, fixture locations and any planned anchors on a sketch or photograph of the bathroom. The camera is most useful when you know which parts of the slab must be protected.
- Use the equipment category shown in the demonstration. The source describes a thermal-imaging camera attached to a smartphone. It does not establish a particular product, operating system, app or specification, so select equipment only after checking its compatibility and instructions.
- Capture the slab surface systematically. Record images across the complete work area rather than taking a single picture. Keep the camera position and viewing direction understandable, and label each image with its location so a warm line can be related to the room plan.
- Look for a repeatable heat pattern. The purpose of the scan is to identify a pattern that corresponds to radiant tubing in the concrete. Do not treat one ambiguous color change, reflection or isolated warm spot as a confirmed pipe route.
- Transfer suspected routes to a plan. Draw the observed lines on a scaled sketch, photograph or floor marking. Include the date and the areas that were not clearly visible. A record of uncertainty is as important as a record of the apparent lines.
- Review the map before making an opening. Give the thermal images and marked plan to the person performing demolition, drilling or cutting. Decide whether the planned work can be moved away from suspected routes or whether the proposed method needs to change.
- Stop when the image is inconclusive. The source provides no verified accuracy figure or universal performance claim. If the pattern cannot be interpreted confidently, do not convert an uncertain image into a cutting location; obtain project-specific confirmation before invasive work.
Conditions that can change what the camera shows
The Ask the Builder page does not establish the conditions required for a successful scan. That matters because thermal imaging reports surface temperature, while the tubing is concealed below the surface. The visible pattern may depend on the floor assembly, the state of the heating system, surface finishes and other site conditions.
For that reason, the video should be read as a demonstration of a possible locating method, not as proof that a smartphone attachment will reveal every pipe in every bathroom. A clear image in one concrete slab does not establish the same result in another slab.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not infer a pipe location from color alone without considering whether the pattern is continuous and consistent across adjacent images. The source supplies no technical test for distinguishing tubing from other warm or cool areas, so an ambiguous result remains ambiguous.
What is—and is not—established about the equipment
| Question | What the available source establishes |
|---|---|
| What kind of tool is used? | A thermal-imaging camera attached to a smartphone. |
| Where is it used? | On a concrete slab containing radiant heat pipes, in the bathroom-remodel context shown. |
| Which brand or model? | Not stated. |
| How accurate is it? | No accuracy figure is stated. |
| What resolution, temperature range or sensitivity is required? | Not stated. |
| Will it find every pipe? | No universal performance claim is established. |
| What alternative detection methods should be compared? | The page does not provide a comparison. |
This distinction prevents a common planning error: treating a generic product category as a certified locating system. If a contractor needs specifications, request them for the actual camera and the actual floor assembly rather than assuming that all smartphone attachments perform alike.

How to document the result for the remodeling crew
Good documentation makes a non-invasive scan useful even when it cannot provide a formal guarantee. Keep the original thermal images, ordinary-light photographs of the same areas and a room sketch showing orientation. Label walls, doorways and permanent fixtures so the images can be placed correctly after demolition begins.
- Mark lines that appear consistently in more than one image.
- Separate suspected pipe routes from areas where the image is unclear.
- Note the exact surfaces scanned and any areas hidden by fixtures or finishes.
- Give the contractor both the marked plan and the unedited images.
- Revisit the plan whenever the layout changes; a new penetration can create a new conflict.
Do not erase uncertain areas from the plan. A blank space can be mistaken for an area proven to be pipe-free, while an “uncertain” label correctly communicates the limit of the scan.
Questions to resolve before relying on the scan
The video description does not answer several questions that can affect a real remodel. Resolve them with the contractor or a qualified heating professional before demolition:
- Is the floor actually a concrete slab with embedded radiant tubing, as in the demonstrated setting?
- Which portions of the bathroom are accessible for scanning?
- Does the planned work require cutting, drilling or anchoring in the mapped area?
- What evidence will be accepted as sufficient before an invasive step?
- What is the plan if the thermal image is weak, interrupted or contradictory?
These are decision points, not specifications supplied by the video. The source does not establish a particular verification standard, so the project team must set one appropriate to the consequences of damaging the heating system.

Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming a smartphone image is a pipe drawing
The camera records a thermal pattern at the surface. It is not described as a direct image of the tubing, and the source gives no accuracy measurement. Use the result to inform planning, not to claim that every line is proven.
Buying a model based on an unverified promise
No model, specification or tested performance appears on the cited page. Avoid presenting an unnamed attachment as universally suitable or recommending one on the video’s authority.
Recommended Free Tools
Scanning only the spot where the cut is planned
A small image can be hard to interpret without the surrounding pattern. Map the full work area and retain the room context so suspected routes can be followed and compared.
Proceeding when the result is inconclusive
The absence of a clear line is not established as proof that no pipe is present. If the image does not support a confident decision, pause the invasive work and obtain additional project-specific guidance.
Bottom line for a bathroom remodel
The documented method is straightforward: use a thermal-imaging camera attached to a smartphone to look for heat patterns over radiant pipes in a concrete slab. The Ask the Builder demonstration shows the concept and the setting, but it does not establish a camera model, accuracy, required conditions or a guarantee of detection. Map the area carefully, preserve the images, mark uncertainty and have the remodel decision reviewed before cutting or drilling.
