Keep construction dust out by closing windows and exterior doors during dusty work, especially on the side facing the site. Do not use open-window ventilation while outdoor dust is elevated. Use compatible HVAC filtration or a portable air cleaner as a supplement, then remove settled dust with damp wiping and careful vacuuming. These steps reduce intrusion but cannot make a home airtight or establish whether a particular site is creating a hazardous exposure.
What to do first when construction is producing dust
Nearby construction can release particle pollution, including PM10 and PM2.5, into surrounding areas. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies construction sites as a source of these particles in its Dust Control guidance (2021). The practical response is to reduce entry while the work is active, filter air that is already indoors, and clean surfaces without putting settled dust back into the air.

| Measure | What it addresses | Main limitation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closed windows and exterior doors | Direct outdoor-air entry | Small cracks and other openings still allow some exchange | During visible or reported dusty work, particularly on the site-facing side |
| Compatible HVAC filter | Particles carried through the central system | Only works when the system operates and the filter fits the equipment | Ongoing background control with manufacturer-approved replacement intervals |
| Portable air cleaner | Particles suspended in a room | Does not stop dust entering through open doors, windows, or leaks | A supplement in occupied rooms where dust is noticed |
| Damp wiping | Dust settled on hard surfaces | Does not remove particles from carpets or upholstery | After dusty work or whenever visible residue appears |
| Careful vacuuming | Dust in carpets, rugs, furniture, and floors | Vacuuming can temporarily stir particles into the air | After damp cleaning, with people who have asthma or allergies out of the area |
Close windows and exterior doors strategically
Shut windows and exterior doors before the dust-producing work starts, and keep them closed during the dusty period. Prioritize openings that face the construction site, because they provide a direct route for outdoor air and particles. Limit unnecessary door opening, and close a door promptly after people or pets pass through.
EPA consumer guidance says to keep windows closed when outdoor pollutants are high. Its Sources of Indoor Particulate Matter (PM) page explains that outdoor particles can enter through windows, doors, cracks, and other openings. Closing a window therefore removes one important pathway; it does not make a building completely airtight.

Use outdoor air-quality information as a signal, not a site monitor
Check your local air-quality report when deciding whether to open a window. It can indicate that regional particle pollution is elevated, but ordinary air-quality reporting may not measure dust from one nearby construction project. Treat it as an additional warning signal rather than proof that your specific building is safe or unsafe.
Do not ventilate by opening windows while outdoor dust is high
Opening windows is often useful when indoor sources are causing a problem, but the advice changes when the source is outside. EPA’s Improving Indoor Air Quality guidance distinguishes ventilation that removes indoor pollutants from outdoor air entering through an open window. If construction dust is elevated outside, open-window ventilation can increase the amount entering your home instead of diluting it.
Plan for the day’s dustiest period
If the contractor or building manager publishes a schedule, use it to close openings and move activities before work begins. Keep a short list of site-facing windows, balcony doors, garage entries, and other openings so no one forgets one. On days when work is unpredictable, respond to visible plumes, fresh residue, or notices from the site rather than leaving windows open by habit. Closing a window is an entry-control step, not a guarantee that no particles will enter through leaks or normal air exchange.

Maintain the central HVAC filter
If your home uses forced-air heating or cooling, install a filter that the equipment manufacturer allows and follow both the system and filter maker’s instructions. A higher-efficiency filter may capture more airborne particles, but an incompatible filter can restrict airflow or cause equipment problems. Check the filter on the schedule stated by the manufacturer, and inspect it sooner if it becomes visibly loaded with dust.
EPA’s Air Cleaners and Air Filters in the Home guidance describes filtration as a supplement to source control and ventilation, not a replacement for reducing the source. A central filter cannot remove dust before it enters through an open window or a gap around a door.
Before buying a higher-efficiency replacement, confirm the size, airflow direction, and permitted filter type for the equipment. In a rental or multifamily building, ask the manager or HVAC professional rather than changing a shared system yourself. Replace the filter according to the stated interval; a visibly dirty filter may need attention sooner, while an overdue filter can reduce system performance.
Add a portable air cleaner where people spend time
A portable air cleaner can reduce particles suspended in a room while the windows remain closed. Place it in the room where occupants spend the most time, leave clearance around its air intake and outlet, and operate it according to the manufacturer’s directions. A unit marketed as a portable HEPA air purifier is one possible category to consider; no particular model is established here as tested or superior.
Keep expectations specific: the appliance treats air that passes through it. It does not seal the building, prevent new dust from entering, or remove settled residue from a floor. Continue closing openings and cleaning surfaces. Replace or wash components only as the product instructions specify. Do not cover the intake with an improvised filter or operate the unit in a way that blocks airflow.
Reduce avoidable air movement between rooms
When one room is closest to the construction side, keep its interior door closed when practical and avoid using fans that blow air from that room into the rest of the home. Do not tape over heating or cooling grilles or block return vents without qualified advice; doing so can interfere with the HVAC system. The goal is to limit unnecessary particle movement while preserving safe equipment operation.
Use normal mechanical ventilation as designed. Do not modify combustion appliances, exhaust systems, or fresh-air intakes to solve a temporary dust problem. If a mechanical intake is drawing air from the construction side, ask the building manager or a qualified technician what settings are safe; the correct response depends on the system.

Where outdoor dust gets in
Particles can enter through obvious openings and through small leaks around window frames, door jambs, utility penetrations, and other cracks. Outdoor and indoor air mix, so even a closed building exchanges some air. If a particular window or door is repeatedly associated with visible residue, check whether its weatherstripping is damaged or compressed and arrange a proper repair. Do not create an improvised seal that prevents an exterior door from operating or blocks a required ventilation or safety opening.
Recommended Free Tools
Weatherstripping or a properly fitted door sweep may reduce drafts at a leaky opening, but choose products that fit the door or window and remain compatible with emergency egress. Permanent repairs are preferable to tape or plastic that can detach, trap moisture, or interfere with operation. In a rented home, report failed seals to the landlord or manager.
Make a room-by-room plan
- Identify rooms on the construction-facing side and close their windows first.
- Move sleeping or work activities to a cleaner room if practical, especially during the dustiest hours.
- Keep clean textiles, children’s toys, and food covered or stored while dusty work is underway.
- Bring outdoor items inside only after brushing or wiping them outside, where appropriate.
- Keep luggage, bedding, and clean laundry away from open doors, windowsills, and dusty balconies.
These housekeeping measures reduce the amount of settled material that can be redistributed indoors; they do not replace controls at the construction site. Avoid shaking dusty rugs or fabrics indoors. If an item is heavily contaminated, isolate it until it can be cleaned using the manufacturer’s care instructions.
How to clean settled construction dust without stirring it up
Clean after the dusty activity has stopped or when the room is otherwise as still as possible. Work from higher surfaces to lower ones so that material dislodged from a shelf does not contaminate an area you have already finished.
- Prepare the room. Close the exterior window or door, move loose objects out of the way, and keep people with asthma or allergies out of the area while cleaning.
- Damp-wipe hard surfaces. Use a clean, damp cloth on window sills, tables, ledges, trim, and other hard surfaces. Moisture helps hold dust on the cloth instead of sending it back into the air. Rinse or replace the cloth as it becomes dirty.
- Clean floors and furnishings. Vacuum carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, and fabric-covered surfaces regularly. Use slow passes rather than vigorous sweeping that can lift particles.
- Prefer a HEPA-filtered vacuum when available. EPA notes that a HEPA filter can help keep some vacuumed dust from escaping back out of the machine. It is a feature, not a guarantee that every particle will be captured.
- Finish with a floor-appropriate damp method. After vacuuming, use a damp mop on hard flooring if the flooring manufacturer permits it. Avoid soaking wood or other materials that can be damaged by excess water.
- Handle the vacuum safely. Empty or replace bags and filters according to the vacuum maker’s instructions, preferably outdoors if the equipment permits. Wash hands after cleaning.
Vacuuming can temporarily increase airborne dust. People with asthma or allergies should leave the area being vacuumed and return after particles have settled and the room has been aired with clean, filtered air. EPA provides this precaution in its indoor particulate-matter guidance.

Dry sweeping, feather dusting, and compressed air tend to redistribute fine particles rather than remove them. Use separate cloths for especially dirty areas, and do not shake them inside. Follow care labels for electronics, stone, wood, and finished surfaces; damp does not mean dripping wet.
Understanding particle size and health implications
EPA describes particulate matter of 10 micrometers in diameter or smaller as a particular indoor-air concern; that size is at least five times smaller than the width of a human hair, according to the EPA page accessed in 2026. The size description explains why particles can remain airborne and travel through a building, but it is not a measurement of your home’s exposure or a prediction of a health outcome.
Construction dust is not a single, uniform substance. Its composition and concentration depend on the materials, equipment, weather, controls, and distance involved. The general steps here are therefore exposure-reduction measures, not a site-specific assessment. Persistent symptoms, visible contamination that cannot be removed, or concerns about a vulnerable occupant warrant advice from an appropriate health professional or qualified indoor-air specialist.
People with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory concerns may choose to spend dusty work periods elsewhere, particularly while vacuuming or when visible dust is entering. There is no general national number in the EPA pages that tells a household exactly when it must leave. Seek medical advice for symptoms such as persistent coughing, wheezing, or breathing difficulty.

- Record the date and time, weather conditions if known, construction activity you observed, and the rooms affected.
- Note which windows, doors, vents, or other locations seem associated with the dust.
- Take dated photographs of visible residue when useful, keeping the original files.
- Write down cleaning dates and whether the dust reappeared soon afterward.
- Keep copies of notices, emails, or replies from the site operator or property manager.
Use that record when contacting the construction-site operator, your building manager, or the relevant local environmental or health authority. Ask what dust-control measures apply to the project and how complaints are handled. Requirements and complaint routes vary by location, so confirm the process locally rather than relying on a generic national procedure.
Ask about controls at the source
Depending on the work, source controls may include keeping soil or debris from becoming airborne, managing vehicle movement, or scheduling especially dusty tasks. The EPA’s Dust Control document identifies construction-related PM10 and PM2.5 as pollutants that can affect surrounding areas, but it does not establish what controls a particular project must use in your jurisdiction.
Do not confuse ordinary dust cleanup with hazardous-material work
Routine damp wiping and vacuuming are appropriate for ordinary settled household dust. They are not a license to disturb suspect paint, insulation, siding, or other building materials.

Homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint. EPA’s Best Practices for Indoor Air Quality when Remodeling Your Home explains that general remodeling practices are not approved for disturbing lead-based paint. Covered renovation work that disturbs paint in pre-1978 target housing or child-occupied facilities has specific certification and work-practice requirements. Use appropriately certified or qualified professionals when those rules apply.
If nearby work is occurring inside your own pre-1978 home, ask whether the contractor is certified for covered renovation and what containment and cleanup procedures will be used. Do not sand, scrape, or dry-sweep deteriorated paint yourself. Lead-safe rules are separate from ordinary outdoor construction-dust precautions.
Suspected asbestos or other unusual materials
Do not sand, scrape, drill, sweep, or vacuum material you suspect may contain asbestos or another hazardous substance. Stop work and obtain qualified local advice. General construction-dust advice cannot identify the material or determine whether a legal or medical threshold has been crossed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ventilation decisions: a simple decision tree
- Is the outdoor construction dust active or visibly elevated? Keep windows and exterior doors closed, and avoid fans that draw unfiltered outdoor air indoors.
- Is the indoor source instead cooking, cleaning, or another activity? Once the outdoor source is not the dominant concern, normal ventilation may help remove indoor pollutants, provided outdoor air is acceptable.
- Do you need air exchange but outdoor conditions remain dusty? Use the home’s normal mechanical system as designed, with a compatible filter, and consider a portable air cleaner. Do not modify combustion or ventilation equipment without qualified advice.
- Has dust settled? Damp-wipe first, then vacuum carefully, keeping sensitive occupants away during vacuuming.
This distinction matters because “more ventilation” is not universally better. Ventilation lowers indoor concentrations when the pollutant originates indoors; an open window increases the entry of an outdoor pollutant.

Frequently asked questions
Should I open windows at night if construction stops?
Only if outdoor conditions are acceptable and no dust is still being generated or carried toward the building. Local air-quality information can help, but it may not detect one construction site. If residue or a visible plume remains, keep windows closed and use compatible filtration instead.
Will closing windows make the house completely dust-proof?
No. Particles can still move through cracks, door gaps, utility penetrations, and normal air exchange. Closing openings removes a major direct pathway, while weatherstripping repairs, filtration, and cleaning address the remaining routes.
Is a portable HEPA purifier enough by itself?
No. It filters particles that pass through the unit but does not stop new dust entering through an open window or remove dust already settled on surfaces. Use it as a supplement to closed openings and careful cleaning.

Can I use a higher-rated HVAC filter in any furnace?
No. The filter must be compatible with the equipment and installed in the correct size and direction. Follow the equipment and filter manufacturers’ instructions or ask a qualified technician. An unsuitable filter can restrict airflow or damage the system.
Should I vacuum before or after damp wiping?
Damp-wipe hard surfaces first, working from high to low, then vacuum carpets, rugs, and upholstery. Finish with a suitable damp mop on hard floors if the flooring permits. This sequence reduces the chance of re-soiling cleaned surfaces.
Can people with asthma stay in the room while I vacuum?
EPA advises that people with asthma or allergies leave the area being vacuumed because vacuuming can stir dust into the air. They can return after cleaning is complete and airborne particles have settled or been removed through clean, filtered air.
When should I contact the construction company or authorities?
Contact them when dust repeatedly enters despite reasonable household controls, when visible plumes or residue persist, or when you need to learn the project’s complaint process. Provide dates, affected rooms, photographs, and the openings or activities associated with the dust. Local requirements and contacts vary.
Does ordinary dust advice apply to old paint or suspected asbestos?
No. Do not disturb suspect paint or unusual building materials. Pre-1978 paint-disturbing work may require EPA lead-safe certification and prescribed practices. Suspected asbestos or other hazardous material requires qualified local advice rather than routine sweeping or vacuuming.
What these measures can and cannot establish
Closing openings, filtering indoor air, and cleaning settled dust are practical ways to reduce indoor particle levels. They do not identify the dust’s chemical composition, measure a household concentration, prove that a construction site violated a rule, or provide a medical threshold for leaving a home. EPA’s consumer pages offer general U.S. guidance, not a site-specific exposure assessment. For persistent contamination, suspected hazardous materials, or health concerns, seek advice suited to your building, location, and occupants.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I keep construction dust from coming into my house?
Close site-facing windows and exterior doors during dusty work, avoid open-window ventilation, maintain a compatible HVAC filter, and use a portable air cleaner as a supplement. Damp-wipe settled dust and vacuum carefully.
Should I use a portable HEPA air purifier?
A portable air cleaner can reduce suspended indoor particles, especially in occupied rooms, but it does not seal openings or remove settled dust. Operate and maintain it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
What is the safest way to clean construction dust?
Damp-wipe hard surfaces first, then vacuum carpets and upholstery, preferably with a HEPA-filtered vacuum. Keep people with asthma or allergies out of the area while vacuuming.
What if dust keeps returning after I clean?
Record dates, rooms, openings, activities, and photographs. Contact the site operator, building manager, or local environmental or health authority and ask about applicable dust controls and complaint procedures.
Are old paint and construction dust handled the same way?
No. Paint-disturbing work in pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities may require EPA lead-safe certification and work practices. Do not disturb suspected lead paint, asbestos, or other hazardous materials yourself.
The Bottom Line
During dusty construction, close windows and exterior doors, especially on the site-facing side, and do not bring in outdoor air through open windows while dust is elevated. Use only compatible HVAC filters and consider a portable air cleaner as a supplement. Damp-wipe settled dust, vacuum carefully with sensitive occupants away, and document and report recurring intrusion. Ordinary cleaning advice does not replace lead-safe or other qualified hazardous-material work.
