To keep leaves from blocking gutters and downspouts, clear the system at least twice a year—in fall and spring—then check it more often after severe weather or when trees around your home shed heavily. Gutter guards can reduce debris, but they do not eliminate maintenance. Make sure water can pass through the downspouts and discharge away from the foundation.
Set a cleaning and inspection schedule
The Government of Canada recommends checking eavestroughs and downspouts at least twice a year, in fall and spring, and removing leaves and sticks. Check more often after severe storms, heavy rain, or high winds, and adjust the schedule to the trees and debris around your home. This is Canadian public guidance; local drainage rules and conditions may differ. Government of Canada guidance

During an inspection, look for debris in the trough, at the outlets, and around the downspout openings. Check that water is not pooling near the foundation. Clogged gutters can also leave standing water; the University of Minnesota Extension identifies standing water as a place mosquitoes can develop, but does not quantify a gutter-specific effect. Consider gutter guards, but plan to inspect them
Gutter guards or screens can reduce the amount of leaves, pine needles, and other debris entering a gutter. They are not clog-proof or maintenance-free: debris can collect on top or around a guard, and periodic inspection and cleaning are still needed. Check that a product fits the installed gutter size and style and works with the roof edge. The available guidance does not establish that one guard design outperforms another. Combined with the snap-in alignment, this DIY gutter guard system is perfect for covering 120 ft of guttering efficiently.
- [MAXIMUM FLOW, MINIMUM CLOGS] Don't let heavy rain worry you. The micro-mesh design effectively siphons water into the gutter while blocking pine needles and debris. These gutter covers ensure your system handles torrential downpours without overflowing, protecting your foundation and landscaping from water damage.
Match the approach to debris and access
Consider the debris your roofline collects, local weather, gutter compatibility, and how much ongoing cleaning you are willing to do. A basic manual setup can include gloves, eye protection, a gutter scoop or gardening shovel, and a hose nozzle. Some manufacturers offer gutter-cleaning attachments for compatible blowers or pressure washers; compatibility and safe use depend on the equipment and site. Those tools do not make an unsafe ladder setup safe. WVU Extension gutter safety; STIHL gutter-cleaning guidance
Clear the downspout and route water away
A clean gutter will not protect the home if water cannot flow through the downspout or is discharged beside the foundation. If water is not draining properly, the Government of Canada recommends using a garden hose to loosen debris. This may help with a debris blockage, but it is not a guaranteed remedy for a damaged, collapsed, or underground drain. If the blockage persists or you cannot reach it safely, have a local professional assess the system.

Check where the outlet sends water. The Government of Canada recommends directing it toward an area with good drainage, at least 2 m (6 ft.) from surrounding homes if possible; that is guidance for its context, not a universal code. The University of Minnesota Extension advises at least one downspout per 50 linear feet of roof eave and extensions discharging at least 4 feet beyond the wall. These are Extension recommendations, not universal requirements. Check local drainage rules and site conditions before changing a discharge route. Know when to call a professional
Get help from a qualified local gutter cleaner or roofer if the work would require unsafe access, the gutter or downspout appears damaged, or a blockage remains after reasonable clearing. The Government of Canada also advises contacting a local professional when a homeowner cannot complete this maintenance. Check local requirements before rerouting downspout discharge.
