How to Keep Customers Coming to Your Business During Nearby Road Construction

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will customers still have access to my business during construction? Often they will, but the answer changes with each work phase, entrance, parking arrangement and local rule. Protect visits by learning the project details first, publishing precise directions, making permitted wayfinding visible, adapting operations to the actual barrier and keeping customers informed until the work is finished. Treat access information as a live service: verify it with the project team, update every channel when conditions change and invite customers back when the route improves.

Start with the project facts, not assumptions

Road work can preserve a driveway one week and close it the next. Before announcing a route, identify the transportation agency, municipality, contractor, business liaison or project supervisor responsible for the work. The Colorado Department of Transportation advises businesses to plan before construction starts; its planning guidance and construction information page explain how to find contacts and prepare. Keep the contact name, telephone number, email address and project-update page in a shared business file.

Ask the questions that affect a customer visit

Request a phase-by-phase schedule rather than one start and end date. Ask which approach remains open in each phase, where customers can park, whether a pedestrian or accessible route is maintained, when lane or sidewalk closures occur, and whether turning movements are restricted. Confirm the route for delivery trucks, the permitted hours for loading, temporary utility interruptions, emergency access and the process for receiving updates. The Region of Durham business guidance and Wisconsin Department of Transportation business information both emphasize sharing business-specific requirements early.

Give the project team a usable business brief

Write down facts that a generic traffic plan may not show: the customer entrance, accessible entrance, number and location of parking spaces, loading bay dimensions, largest delivery vehicle, busiest arrival periods, operating hours, utility dependencies and any time-sensitive service. Send this brief before work begins and ask how each item will be handled in every phase. If a promised route becomes impractical, report it promptly rather than waiting for the next public meeting.

Build a phase calendar

Translate the contractor’s schedule into customer-impact dates: entrance changes, parking moves, sidewalk closures, night work, utility work and restoration. Assign one staff member to check agency or contractor updates on an agreed cadence. Conditions can change with weather, safety needs or accelerated work, so mark the calendar as provisional and record the date of the latest confirmation. Do not treat a navigation app’s suggested route as the official access plan; verify the route against current project information and your own observations.

Publish directions customers can actually follow

A statement that says only open is not enough. Customers need to know how to reach the open entrance, where to stop and whether they should walk from another parking area. The Minnesota Department of Transportation’s business guidance and Toronto’s Construction Mitigation Strategies Retailer Guide recommend practical, current information for people trying to reach a business.

Use a standard access message

Prepare a short message that can be copied without alteration:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
We are open during the road work. Enter from [current street or driveway], use [parking or drop-off location], and follow [walking instruction]. The next access change is expected [date or phase]. Call [business number] if you need help planning your visit.

Replace every bracketed item with confirmed information before publishing. If access differs for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists or customers using an accessible entrance, give each route its own sentence. State what is closed as well as what remains open; a customer who knows a familiar entrance is unavailable is less likely to turn around.

Keep every customer-facing channel synchronized

Update the website home page and contact page, your business listing, social profiles, email messages, voicemail greeting, appointment confirmations and a notice on the door when those channels are in use. Put the effective date or phase on the notice so staff can remove stale instructions. Milwaukee’s business support page stresses clear communication during major projects. Give front-line employees a one-page script and the same map or written directions used online.

Make a simple map

For a confusing detour, draw the final approach from a recognizable cross street, show the open driveway, parking or drop-off area and a walking path to the door. Label a closed approach with a cross or a short note instead of asking people to follow an unspecified detour. Date the map and identify the project phase. Check it by driving and walking the route at the times customers arrive; a route that works at midday may be blocked during a scheduled closure.

Make wayfinding visible and lawful

Temporary directional and parking signs can solve the discoverability problem when customers can reach the site but cannot see how. Place signs where a driver or pedestrian makes a decision, use large high-contrast lettering and name the destination rather than relying on an arrow alone. Toronto’s guide specifically discusses directional and parking signs, while Colorado and Wisconsin guidance stress coordination with the project team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not put an A-frame, banner or arrow in a public road right-of-way, median, sidewalk or construction area unless the responsible authority has approved that location. Ask the project contact or municipality where signs may stand, what wording is allowed, whether a permit is required and who removes them after a phase. A portable A-frame can be useful on private property or another approved location, but no guidance guarantees permission at a desired spot. Refresh or remove signs immediately when the entrance or parking arrangement changes.

Adapt the operation to the barrier customers face

Choose an operational change because it removes a specific obstacle, not because every business is expected to use the same tactic.

If the entrance or parking is hard to find

Move the welcome point to the open entrance, station an employee during the busiest arrival period or offer curbside handoff where local rules and safety conditions allow. Put the current route on appointment confirmations and delivery instructions. If a nearby lot is available, obtain the owner’s permission, define the walking route and explain any time limits before directing customers there.

If travel takes longer

Adjust opening or appointment hours to include the periods when the route is least congested. Stagger staff arrivals so employees are not competing with customers for the fewest spaces. For service businesses, group visits geographically or offer a remote consultation when the customer’s task does not require a site visit. Explain any changed hours prominently and update voicemail and booking systems at the same time.

If suppliers and delivery vehicles are restricted

Give suppliers the phase-specific route, truck-size limits, loading location and permitted delivery window. Schedule shipments for quieter periods when the contractor allows it, split a large delivery into smaller vehicles if that is practical and confirm who receives goods when the usual bay is inaccessible. Tell customers about delivery or pickup options when those options genuinely replace a difficult trip; do not advertise a service that staffing or construction restrictions cannot support.

If utilities, noise or work zones interrupt service

Ask the project contact for planned utility outages and high-noise periods. Protect inventory that is sensitive to dust, vibration or temperature, and move appointments or stock before a confirmed interruption. Keep an emergency contact method visible so a customer arriving during an unexpected closure can reschedule rather than assume the business has permanently shut.

If the business serves different customer groups

Write separate instructions for walk-in shoppers, appointment customers, commercial clients, delivery recipients and people who need an accessible route. A single sign saying open may help one group and mislead another. Train each employee who answers the phone or manages online bookings to ask which kind of visit is planned before giving directions.

Keep customers connected without buying loyalty with unnecessary discounts

Regular, useful contact reassures customers who already know you and helps unfamiliar customers decide that the trip is manageable. Use an email list collected with appropriate consent, social posts, account messages and in-person conversations to share the current route, not a stream of generic construction complaints.

Use an offer only when it solves a real problem

A focused promotion can give people a reason to visit during a period of uncertainty: a free-with-purchase item, a bundled service, an appointment window with added convenience or a small event timed to a quieter period. Milwaukee advises against reflexive deep discounting and suggests considering free-with-purchase value instead. Set a budget, a time limit and a way to identify the offer so you can compare response with its cost. Do not imply that a discount is compensation for construction or promise that it will preserve revenue.

Coordinate locally

Talk with neighboring businesses, a business improvement area, chamber or trade group about a shared access map, cross-referrals, coordinated opening hours, a joint event or a common message to the project team. A combined notice can help customers understand that several businesses remain open, while shared feedback can reveal a blocked turn or missing sign faster than one business reporting alone. Keep each business’s directions specific; a shared campaign should not replace an accurate address and entrance.

Measure friction, not just sales

Ask callers how they found the entrance, record missed appointments caused by access and note delivery delays, parking complaints and requests for alternative service. Compare these observations with staffing and promotion costs. The official guidance reviewed does not establish a universal percentage loss or a guaranteed recovery rate, so use your own documented experience to decide whether a tactic is worth continuing.

Action plan by project phase

Before work begins

  1. Identify the agency, municipality, contractor and business liaison; save their contact details and subscribe to available notices. The Colorado planning page explains this preparation step.
  2. Obtain the phase schedule and document vehicle, pedestrian, accessible-route, parking, loading, utility and operating-hour requirements.
  3. Send the business brief to the project team, attend meetings when possible and ask how to report an access problem.
  4. Prepare the dated access message, map, staff script, voicemail wording, window notice and supplier instructions.
  5. Plan staffing, inventory, delivery windows and any alternate service against each phase rather than assuming conditions will stay constant.
  6. Coordinate with neighboring businesses or local business groups on shared communication, parking information and customer events.

While work is underway

  1. Check the latest agency or contractor update before publishing a route. Record the confirmation date on your internal phase calendar.
  2. Post the current entrance, parking, walking route, hours and contact method on the channels your customers use; replace old maps and notices.
  3. Use only signs and locations approved by the project team or local authority, and remove or move them when conditions change.
  4. Brief employees, suppliers and delivery drivers on restrictions and adjust shipments, appointments or service delivery to match the current phase.
  5. Review calls, complaints, missed visits and delivery delays; report a blocked or unsafe route promptly and revise directions.
  6. Run a targeted event, convenience service or offer only when it addresses a documented awareness, timing or travel barrier.

When the project is complete

  1. Confirm that the work phase affecting your approach is actually finished; completion of paving does not necessarily mean every lane, sidewalk or parking area is restored.
  2. Tell customers what changed, which entrance and parking are now available and whether any temporary restriction remains. Use email, social posts, the website, in-person notices and the business listing as appropriate.
  3. Invite customers back with a practical event or joint promotion if it fits the business. Indiana’s Road Construction Guide includes ideas for communicating after work and recognizing improved access.
  4. Remove temporary signs, maps, voicemail wording and online notices that are no longer accurate.
  5. Record which messages, routes, staffing changes and delivery arrangements worked. Minnesota asks businesses to share feedback about project communication and what helped.

Choose tactics by the barrier they remove

The options below are a decision framework, not a measured ranking. Match the tactic to the customer barrier, setup burden, construction phase and your ability to keep information current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Tactic Barrier addressed Setup and staff burden Best fit What must stay current
Approved directional or parking signs Customers cannot find the entrance or parking Sign design, permission and checks after each phase Site remains reachable but visibility is poor Location, arrow direction and wording
Dated route map and written directions Customers do not understand a detour or walking route Map creation and verification by vehicle and on foot Several approaches or a changed pedestrian path Closed streets, turns, entrance and parking
Delivery, pickup or remote service Travel time or inability to reach the site Scheduling, staffing, equipment and service-area limits Products or services can be handled away from the premises Availability, delivery window and coverage area
Adjusted or extended hours Congestion or restricted arrival times Staff scheduling, security and cost review Customers can shift the time of a visit Opening hours and appointment systems
Focused offer or event Awareness or lack of a reason to make the trip Budget, promotion, staffing and measurement Access is workable and an incentive supports a real goal Offer terms, date, access message and capacity
Neighbor collaboration Fragmented information or reduced area traffic Coordination time and agreed messaging Several nearby businesses face the same phase Shared route facts and event details

Troubleshoot common failures quickly

The published route is blocked unexpectedly

Call the project contact, verify the safe alternative, update the website, listing, social channels, voicemail and door notice, and tell anyone with an appointment. Keep the old message archived internally so staff can identify which customers may have received it.

Customers arrive but cannot see where to park

Walk the final approach from each direction, identify the decision point where people hesitate and request an approved sign or a clearer private-property notice. Add a written landmark to the map and ask an employee to meet arrivals temporarily if safety allows.

Staff give different answers

Designate one person to approve access information. Issue a dated one-page brief, remove superseded copies and require staff to check the same project update before answering an unusual route question.

Deliveries are refused at the usual entrance

Ask the contractor for the permitted loading point and time, give that information to every supplier and confirm the vehicle dimensions they can accept. If the route cannot handle a shipment, reschedule or change the delivery method before the truck arrives.

Visits fall even though access remains open

Check whether customers know the business is open, whether the map reflects their actual approach and whether a timing or parking barrier remains. Use call notes and missed-appointment reasons to choose between clearer wayfinding, adjusted hours, delivery or a modest targeted offer instead of assuming a larger discount is required.

Know what local guidance cannot guarantee

Agency and municipal recommendations are general. They do not guarantee that a road, driveway, sidewalk or parking area will remain open, that an agency will provide individual business signs, that your business qualifies for compensation or grants, or that any marketing tactic will preserve revenue. Access, sign permissions, right-of-way rules, support programs and timing are location-specific. Confirm them with the responsible agency, municipality, contractor or business liaison before promising customers a route.

With a verified phase plan, one current set of directions, permitted wayfinding and operations matched to the actual obstacle, you can make the decision to visit easier even when the road outside is changing.
