Register first, then choose the route that matches your quantities: take small, regular loads to a participating flooring distributor, or arrange a collection from a premises or project site when you have larger volumes.
The scheme is not a general solution for every floor covering. Your waste must meet Recofloor’s specification, be separated correctly and be presented in the required bags and pallets. Checking the material, local drop-off rules and collection access before you book prevents rejected loads and avoidable disposal costs.

What Recofloor membership is
Recofloor is a UK take-back and recycling service for commercial waste vinyl flooring. It was founded by Altro and Polyflor following a WRAP-funded pilot. Resource Futures took on day-to-day programme management in November 2024. The service is aimed at businesses in the flooring and construction chain rather than householders.

Membership starts with registration. Once registered, a business can use the scheme’s drop-off or collection arrangements, receive scheme sacks or bulk bags, and obtain records of material collected. Those records can help with internal waste targets, client reporting and tender evidence.

Who can use it
Recofloor identifies flooring contractors, floor fitters, construction companies, flooring distributors, project managers and facilities managers as relevant participants. Contractors and fitters normally register and handle the physical waste. A project or facilities manager can specify Recofloor in a project’s waste plan, while the appointed contractor usually performs the segregation, storage and handover.
This distinction matters on multi-party jobs. Specify the scheme in the project documentation, but agree in writing who will supply sacks, keep the material clean, request a collection and retain the participation evidence.
Check that your vinyl is eligible
Do not treat the word “vinyl” as an automatic acceptance decision. Recofloor’s contractor guidance lists particular categories and excludes others. Separate material at the point of removal so unacceptable products do not contaminate an otherwise usable load.

Other manufacturers’ products may be accepted when the material meets the specification. That is narrower than saying every brand or every type of vinyl qualifies. If the backing, adhesive, screed or contamination is uncertain, ask Recofloor or the participating distributor before filling a bag.
Choose the route that fits your waste
There are two practical ways to use the service. The amount you generate, the category of vinyl and the distance to a participating distributor should drive the decision.

Use a distributor drop-off for small loads
Register as a drop-off site user and take eligible material to a participating flooring distributor. Recofloor says registered users can obtain clear sacks through the drop-off point or order them from the scheme. Ask the individual site what it accepts before travelling: participation does not mean every distributor handles every listed category at every location.
This route works well when installers return from several small jobs each week. Keep a simple log by site and material type, and do not combine uplifted flooring with clean offcuts unless the receiving location expressly allows that arrangement.

For a larger accumulation, register for a collection from your premises or the project site. Recofloor contacts the applicant to assess the location and agree the arrangements. The contractor guidance says a forklift is useful. If there is no forklift, the collection point must be accessible to the manufacturer’s pallet trucks.
A minimum of two bulk bags per collection is usually required. The FAQ gives a four-to-ten-working-day window after a collection request, but schedules and terms can change, so confirm the current timing when you book. Do not promise a client a removal date until the collection has been accepted and scheduled.

Registration is the starting point for both routes. Prepare the information below so the scheme can match your business with an appropriate route.

- Identify your business role and waste pattern. Note whether you are a contractor, fitter, construction company, distributor or project/facilities manager, and estimate the weekly or project-based amount of each vinyl category.
- Check the specification. Separate smooth, safety, LVT, loose-lay and qualifying uplifted smooth vinyl. Remove cushion- or felt-backed products and anything else outside the current guidance.
- Register through Recofloor’s membership process. Provide your business and contact details, the sites you use and whether you need distributor drop-off or a premises/job-site collection.
- Confirm the local operating arrangement. For drop-off, ask the participating distributor about accepted categories, sacks, opening times and intake limits. For collection, give the site address, access information, expected bag count and a contact who can release the waste.
- Obtain the correct containers. Use Recofloor clear sacks or bulk bags as directed. Do not substitute a generic bag when the receiving site requires a scheme container or a particular colour-coded stream.
- Book or deliver only after the load is ready. Keep the material dry, segregated and within the specification. For a collection, confirm the agreed number of bags and the available date before moving them to the loading point.
Prepare bags and pallets correctly
Recofloor’s bulk bags are colour-coded by waste category:
- Blue: safety offcuts.
- Green: smooth offcuts.
- Orange: qualifying uplifted smooth flooring.
- Yellow: LVT offcuts.
The contractor page describes each bulk bag as 1 cubic metre, holding around 80 square metres or 250–300 kg. These are approximate capacities supplied by Recofloor, not a guarantee that every type of flooring will reach the same area or weight. Follow the current label if it differs.
Place each bag securely on a standard 1,200 × 1,000 mm pallet. Keep the pallet stable, leave the collection point clear and ensure a vehicle or pallet truck can approach it. A bag that is overfilled, unstable or inaccessible can delay loading or lead to rejection.
Clear sacks and mixed-bin arrangements
Clear sacks are optional for offcuts in the arrangements described by Recofloor, but they are required for uplifted vinyl in certain mixed-bin drop-off arrangements. Clean offcuts and uplifted flooring must remain separate. Before using a mixed-bin service, ask the distributor exactly how the sacks should be tied, labelled and placed inside the bin.
What can go wrong, and how to prevent it
Contaminated or wrong-category material
Adhesive, screed, backing, wood, metal, carpet or general site rubbish can make a load unacceptable. Train installers to put offcuts straight into the correct coloured bag and to isolate uplifted flooring during removal. If a product has a cushion or felt backing, do not put it in a Recofloor bag.

Too few bags for a collection
Because two bulk bags are usually the minimum, a single partly filled bag may not qualify for a scheduled collection. Accumulate material safely, use a participating drop-off for smaller quantities, or ask Recofloor whether the current minimum has changed.
Poor access
Tell the scheme about gates, height restrictions, loading bays, gradients and working-hour limits. Arrange a forklift where practical. Without one, the bags must be positioned where the manufacturer’s pallet trucks can reach them. Never place a pallet behind parked vehicles or in an area that requires manual carrying across a live site.
Extra or unbooked bags
Collections are arranged around an agreed quantity. Additional bags, insecure pallets or material outside the specification can cause loading problems or disposal charges. Count and inspect the bags before the vehicle arrives; request an amended booking if the quantity has changed.

Recofloor says joining is free and that small drop-offs are free. Its homepage advertises potential savings of up to 70% compared with landfill or skip costs. That is a Recofloor claim, undated on the homepage and accessed in 2026, not a guaranteed saving for every contractor.

Your result depends on the amount and type of waste, local skip or landfill prices, travel to a distributor, labour for sorting, pallet handling and the agreed collection terms. Use Recofloor’s current calculator and obtain the applicable terms before changing a site’s waste budget. Compare the full cost, including storage space and transport, rather than comparing only a headline disposal price.

Why a free membership can still require planning
- Someone must identify eligible vinyl and keep excluded materials out.
- Separate bags and pallets occupy storage space until a drop-off or collection.
- Installers need instructions so that waste is not mixed during a rushed uplift.
- Large collections need a suitable loading point and a person available at the agreed time.
- Project records should match the weights and collections actually recorded by the scheme.
Evidence for clients, tenders and reporting
Recofloor records collections and weights, allowing members to track performance and set waste targets. After a first collection, members receive a Certificate of Commitment. Members can also request statement letters showing participation or material collected.
Those documents may support sustainability reporting, environmental-award applications, BREEAM-related evidence and tenders. They demonstrate participation or recorded material; membership alone does not guarantee certification, BREEAM points, an award or a contract. Keep the certificate, statements, collection dates and project references in the same file as your waste-transfer records.
When membership is a good fit
Joining is a sensible step when your business regularly handles the specified commercial vinyl categories, has a nearby participating distributor or can stage at least two bulk bags, and can control segregation on site. It is less suitable as a default answer for household flooring, cushion- or felt-backed products, mixed flooring waste or a site with no safe storage and no vehicle access.

- Use another route for excluded material rather than risking contamination of an eligible load.
Site checklist before you register or book
- List each vinyl product and identify its backing.
- Separate smooth, safety, LVT, loose-lay and qualifying uplifted smooth flooring.
- Remove cushion- and felt-backed vinyl and other non-conforming waste.
- Decide whether your normal quantity is a drop-off load or at least two collection bags.
- Check the nearest participating distributor’s acceptance rules.
- For collections, measure access and plan forklift or pallet-truck movement.
- Use the colour-coded bags and secure every bag on a 1,200 × 1,000 mm pallet.
- Confirm the current booking window, quantity and terms.
- File certificates, statements, weights and collection dates for the relevant project.
The practical verdict
Everyone in flooring should not interpret the slogan as “every floor covering belongs in Recofloor.” The useful conclusion is narrower and more actionable: UK businesses that generate the specified commercial vinyl waste should register, then select the drop-off or collection route that matches their volume and local logistics. Correct sorting, safe bagging, pallet placement and confirmed site rules determine whether membership delivers a smooth recycling service and credible evidence for clients.
