How to Install Gaskets on Electrical Outlets to Reduce Drafts

A foam gasket can reduce drafts at the outlet cover-plate gap. Learn how to fit one safely and when the leak needs a broader assessment.

A foam outlet gasket fits between the receptacle and its cover plate, where it can reduce airflow through the narrow plate-to-wall gap. It will not seal every possible leak around an electrical box or wiring. Before removing a cover plate, switch off the circuit and verify the outlet is de-energized with a voltage tester; if you are unsure how to do that safely, call a qualified electrician.

What an outlet gasket seals—and what it does not

The gasket sits between the receptacle and cover plate. It addresses airflow at that interface, not openings behind the plate or elsewhere in the wall. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America air-sealing guide recommends foam gaskets between electrical outlets or switches and their cover plates.

If air continues to come through after fitting a gasket, the leak may be around the electrical box, cable openings, or another wall penetration. Those locations call for a broader assessment and potentially different materials or work; a cover-plate gasket is not a substitute for sealing them.

How to fit a foam gasket at the cover plate

  1. Identify the drafty outlet. Note where you feel airflow. ENERGY STAR’s DIY inspection guidance includes removing an outlet cover to inspect the wall opening and advises checking for power with a voltage tester before beginning.
  2. De-energize and verify. Turn off the correct circuit at the breaker, then use a voltage tester to confirm the outlet is not energized before working near it. Follow the tester’s instructions. If you cannot confidently identify the circuit or verify that power is off, stop and get qualified help.
  3. Remove the cover plate. Unscrew it carefully. Do not remove or alter the receptacle wiring for this gasket installation.
  4. Place the gasket. Fit a correctly sized foam gasket over the receptacle so it lies between the receptacle and the cover plate. The cited guidance supports this location but does not specify a universal gasket model, thickness, or brand; follow the gasket maker’s directions.
  5. Refit the plate. Reinstall the cover plate without forcing it or overtightening its screw. If it will not sit properly, do not compress or cut the gasket in a way that leaves the receptacle exposed; remove it and check fit, or ask an electrician.
  6. Restore power and check. Once the plate is secure and tools are clear, turn the circuit back on. If you still notice airflow, investigate the possibility of leakage around the box or other wall openings rather than adding more gasket material at the plate.

When the leak needs a broader fix

The Department of Energy’s Building Science Education guidance distinguishes plate gaskets from air-sealing the electrical box. For wall-mounted boxes, it recommends gasketed, airtight boxes or sealing openings in standard boxes and sealing the box to the drywall. Any sealant must be compatible with adjoining surfaces and meet applicable fire and air-barrier requirements. Because the work involves electrical components and code requirements, have an electrician or qualified home-energy professional assess uncertain conditions.

If there are any problems with our products, Please contact us and we will be happy to provide you with after-sales service.
  • Draft only at the plate edge: a removable foam cover-plate gasket is the limited fix described here.
  • Airflow from box or cable openings: the gasket may not reach the leak; box-level sealing or an airtight box may be needed, using code-appropriate materials.
  • Unclear source or safety concern: arrange a professional assessment. ENERGY STAR recommends a comprehensive home energy assessment to locate hidden leaks and potential safety issues; air sealing can also affect combustion appliances and indoor air quality in some situations.

Stop and call an electrician if you see a problem

Do not treat a gasket as a repair for a loose, damaged, hot, or discolored receptacle, or one whose cover plate is difficult to refit. Stop if the outlet condition is uncertain and have it checked. A draft gasket is not an electrical safety device or a tamper-resistant receptacle; ESFI says tamper-resistant receptacles should only be installed by a licensed electrician. See ESFI’s tamper-resistant receptacle guidance for that separate safety topic.

The cited official guidance does not establish a particular energy-savings amount for an outlet gasket or show that one foam type or brand performs better than another. Treat it as a small air-sealing measure for one specific gap, not a guaranteed solution to whole-wall drafts.
