Install cement backerboard around a tub by fastening the panels to straight, adequately spaced framing, leaving the lower edge about 1/4 inch above the tub or shower lip, treating every joint with the board maker’s mortar and alkali-resistant mesh tape, and completing a compatible waterproofing assembly before tile. Cement board is a tile substrate, not a waterproof membrane by itself. The correct fasteners, joint materials, spacing, gap detail, membrane and plumbing transitions come from the installation guide for the exact board and waterproofing system you are using.

What the backerboard does—and what it does not do

Cement backerboard provides a rigid, tile-ready surface on tub-surround walls. It helps support the tile assembly, but the board alone should not be treated as the wet-area waterproofing layer. Waterproofing is a separate assembly decision involving the board, seam treatment, membrane or vapor-control method, tub flange detail, corners and pipe penetrations.

Some systems use a surface-applied liquid membrane over cement board. USG, for example, sells a separate liquid waterproofing and crack-isolation membrane for wet areas and describes two coats over rough substrates such as Durock cement board. That product-specific detail is not a universal instruction for every board or tub surround. James Hardie notes that a membrane or vapor control may be required by local code. Use one documented, compatible system rather than mixing instructions from unrelated products.

Before installation: confirm the assembly

Read the guide for the board you bought

Manufacturer instructions are not interchangeable. USG’s Durock guide and James Hardie’s Hardie Backer wall guidance both use 16-inch maximum stud spacing and 8-inch maximum fastener spacing, but their approved fasteners and joint materials differ. Check the current guide, the panel thickness, the framing type and the waterproofing manufacturer’s instructions before cutting a panel.

Inspect and reinforce the framing

  • Use straight, aligned framing so panels lie flat. James Hardie’s wall guidance describes 2-by-4 wood studs or 20-gauge metal studs, with studs no more than 16 inches on center.
  • Reinforce corners and any location where an edge, fixture or accessory must be supported. Panel edges that run parallel to framing need solid support.
  • Plan the layout so joints land on framing and four panel corners do not meet at one point. Staggering joints reduces a concentrated weak spot.
  • Confirm that the tub is solidly installed and that its flange or lip detail is known before placing the first panel.

Plan the lower edge and transitions

The panel must not sit on the tub or shower-pan lip. USG calls for a 1/4-inch spacer around the lip. James Hardie describes starting the board 1/4 inch above the floor, tub or shower board and caulking as directed. The exact detail depends on the selected product and waterproofing system, so use the specified dimension and sealant for that assembly.

Measure where the board will meet adjacent walls, the ceiling, the floor and the tub flange. Dry-fit panels so the lower edge remains at the required gap while the panel edges still land on framing. Do not force panel ends and edges together; USG’s guide says to fit them closely but not force them.

Compatibility matters at every interface: board to fastener, board to tape, tape to mortar, membrane to substrate, and membrane to tub flange and plumbing penetrations. A product that is acceptable for one manufacturer’s board is not automatically approved for another.

How do you install cement board around a bathtub?

  1. Verify the framing and layout. Check stud alignment, maximum spacing, corner backing and panel-edge support. Mark stud centers on the floor or ceiling so they remain visible after a panel is placed. Locate valves, showerheads, spouts and other penetrations from a measured reference.
  2. Measure and cut the panels. Transfer measurements carefully, allowing the specified 1/4-inch lower gap and the clearances required at corners and penetrations. Use the cutting method recommended by the board maker. Avoid creating a joint directly at a plumbing opening when the layout can provide a better-supported location.
  3. Position the first panel. Set its lower edge on a temporary 1/4-inch spacer above the tub or pan lip, or use the exact support detail in the selected guide. Keep the panel face flush and its edges on framing. Do not rest cement board on the tub deck or bend it over the lip unless the system specifically directs that detail.
  4. Fasten to the framing. Drive the specified fasteners at no more than 8 inches on center in the field and along supported edges, unless the product guide gives a different pattern. Set heads flush with the surface; do not overdrive them or break the board facing. Keep fasteners the manufacturer’s required distance from panel edges.
  5. Repeat the panel layout. Stagger joints where directed, maintain the lower gap, and support every edge. Fit adjoining panels closely without forcing them together. Check each panel for movement before proceeding.
  6. Treat the joints. Apply the specified mortar or adhesive, embed alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh tape, and tool the joint level. James Hardie specifies 2-inch high-strength alkali-resistant glass-fiber tape embedded in mortar. USG directs installers to fill joints with latex-fortified mortar or Type 1 organic adhesive and embed alkali-resistant mesh tape. Follow the exact product guide rather than combining these instructions casually.
  7. Detail corners, the tub interface and penetrations. Use the membrane manufacturer’s approved sealant, reinforcing fabric, corners and collars where required. The joint at the tub lip must remain part of the waterproofing assembly; do not assume ordinary painter’s caulk or exposed cement board makes the transition watertight.
  8. Apply waterproofing when required. Install the selected membrane or vapor-control layer at the thickness, coat count, coverage and cure times stated by its instructions. Treat seams, corners, fastener areas and plumbing penetrations exactly as that system requires. Local code may determine whether a surface membrane, a vapor retarder or another method is necessary.
  9. Allow the assembly to cure before tiling. The substrate must be stable, joints finished and membrane requirements complete. Do not cover a membrane or mortar before its stated cure time. For Hardie Backer, James Hardie’s article says to allow at least 24 hours before grouting; verify the current mortar, membrane and tile-product instructions before relying on that interval.
  10. Set the tile. Spread the specified mortar or adhesive with a notched trowel, press each tile into place with a slight twisting motion, and maintain the movement joints and perimeter clearances required by the tile assembly.

Fastener and spacing requirements by example

Instruction source Framing and spacing Approved fastener examples Joint treatment
USG Durock installation guide Wall studs 16 inches on center; wall fasteners 8 inches on center Wood framing: 1-1/2-inch hot-dipped galvanized roofing nails or 1-1/4-inch Durock tile backer screws. Steel framing: 1-1/4-inch Durock screws. Latex-fortified mortar or Type 1 organic adhesive with alkali-resistant mesh tape
James Hardie wall guidance Studs no more than 16 inches on center; fasteners no more than 8 inches on center Corrosion-resistant roofing nails or Backer-On screws at least 1-1/4 inches long Mortar with 2-inch high-strength alkali-resistant glass-fiber tape

These values illustrate why the board’s own guide controls the installation. They are manufacturer-specific instructions, not a replacement for structural requirements, local code or the complete waterproofing assembly documents.

How far above the tub should backerboard sit?

Use the gap stated by the selected board system; the examples in the manufacturer guidance are 1/4 inch above the tub, pan or floor. The board should stop above the lip rather than sit on it. The waterproofing detail then bridges or seals that transition as specified. Keep the gap consistent, support the panel while fastening, and use only the compatible sealant or membrane treatment named by the system.

Do you need to waterproof cement board before tiling?

Cement board itself is not the waterproof membrane. In a tub surround, follow the project’s wet-area design and local code to determine the required membrane or vapor-control layer. If the design uses a surface-applied liquid membrane, apply that product over the prepared board in the specified coats and thickness, including its treatment for joints, corners and penetrations. USG’s liquid membrane information describes two coats for rough substrates such as Durock and for horizontal applications, but that information applies to that product and does not establish a universal method.

Do not tile until the waterproofing layer has reached the required coverage and cure. A board with taped seams but no required membrane is not automatically a watertight tub surround.

Cutting and installation safety

Cutting cement board can create respirable crystalline-silica dust. USG advises avoiding dust inhalation, working in a well-ventilated area and using the protective equipment specified for the product, including an appropriate respirator and eye and skin protection. Consult the current safety data sheet and local requirements before cutting. Use dust-control practices rather than dry-cutting in an occupied bathroom, and keep other workers and occupants away from the cutting area.

Common problems and how to correct them

The panel is touching the tub lip

Remove or reposition it so the required gap is restored before fastening. A panel bearing on the lip can transfer movement into the tile and leaves no room for the specified waterproofing transition.

Screws are overdriven or the wrong type

Replace damaged fasteners and reset sound fasteners flush. Drywall screws, unapproved lengths and fasteners that do not resist corrosion can compromise the board or the wet-area assembly. Use the exact fastener family and length listed for the board and framing.

A joint has no tape or the tape is ordinary drywall mesh

Remove loose or incompatible material, then retape with the specified alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh embedded in the approved mortar or adhesive. Ordinary drywall tape is not a substitute for the cement-board system.

Edges or corners move when pressed

Stop before tiling. Add the required backing or correct the framing and fastening so every panel edge is supported and the assembly is rigid. Do not expect mortar or tile to stabilize a loose panel.

The membrane, sealant and board come from unrelated systems

Check each manufacturer’s compatibility statement and installation sequence. If the products are not documented as a compatible assembly, select a complete system or obtain written technical guidance before covering the work.
