How to Inspect and Repair Roof Damage After a Drone or Aerial Impact

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a drone, aircraft part, balloon, or other airborne object strikes your roof, keep people off the roof and out of the falling-object area. Begin with safe observations from the ground and inside the building, preserve photos and a timeline, and arrange a qualified roof inspection when there is sagging, movement, exposed decking, widespread water, damaged penetrations, electrical danger, or unsafe access. A secured emergency cover can limit further rain entry, but it does not make an unstable roof safe. Permanent repairs should follow a fall-protection plan and be completed by trained workers or a qualified roofing contractor.

What to do immediately after an impact

  1. Clear the hazard area. Keep occupants, visitors, and workers away from the roof, eaves, skylights, and any place where loose material could fall. Do not climb up simply to take pictures.
  2. Look for urgent interior danger. If water is reaching light fixtures, outlets, wiring, or electrical equipment, keep clear of the wet area and have qualified electrical help isolate the hazard. Do not touch wet electrical components.
  3. Record the event. Note the date and time, weather, what was seen or heard, the object involved, witnesses, and any available flight information. Take original photographs and video from safe locations before debris is moved.
  4. Prevent additional water entry only if it can be done without roof exposure. A properly secured emergency tarp may be appropriate, but a steep, wet, fragile, or visibly moving roof requires a contractor or access equipment rather than a do-it-yourself climb.
  5. Arrange an assessment. A qualified inspector or roofing contractor should determine whether only the roof covering is affected or whether the underlayment, decking, framing, flashing, or penetrations also require work.

Why a drone strike can be more serious than it looks

An impact may leave an obvious hole in a shingle, tile, or membrane while also damaging layers that cannot be seen from the ground. A complete assessment considers each part of the roof assembly:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Roof covering: Missing, cracked, punctured, crushed, or displaced shingles, tiles, metal panels, or membrane.
  • Underlayment: Tears or displacement can allow water below the visible covering even when the surface appears nearly intact.
  • Decking: A puncture, split, delamination, or softened panel can reduce the surface’s ability to support workers and may be hidden beneath the covering.
  • Framing: A heavy or fast-moving object can crack, shift, or overload rafters and trusses. Sagging or movement is a reason to stay off the roof.
  • Flashing and penetrations: Chimneys, vents, plumbing boots, skylights, roof hatches, and mechanical penetrations are common leak paths after an impact.
  • Edges and drainage: Gutters, eaves, fascia, coping, and downspouts can be bent or detached, allowing water to reach walls or foundations.
  • Interior finishes and contents: Ceiling stains, active drips, wet insulation, damaged drywall, and odors can show that water has traveled beyond the impact point.

Do not assume that a roof is safe because the drone was small. The outcome depends on speed, weight, impact angle, roof material, and where the object struck. A visual inspection from a safe position can identify warning signs, but it cannot certify hidden structural capacity.

A safe inspection sequence

1. Survey the roof from the ground or a safe platform

Use a camera with zoom, binoculars, or a work platform that does not require stepping onto a suspect roof. Photograph the entire elevation first, then close views of the impact area. Include a fixed reference such as a vent, chimney, or roof edge so the location can be identified later.

  • Debris on the roof, in gutters, or on the ground
  • Distortion, sagging, separated joints, or any movement under wind
  • Damaged gutters, eaves, fascia, downspouts, or exterior wall finishes

Photograph debris before disposal when practical. Do not drag material across the roof or pull away a component that may be supporting another part of the assembly.

2. Inspect rooms below the impact

From inside, document ceiling stains, active drips, bubbling paint, damaged wall finishes, wet insulation, and any musty or burning odor. Follow water beyond the room directly below the strike; leaks can travel along decking, framing, insulation, and wall cavities. Place containers under drips only after checking that doing so does not bring you near energized electrical equipment.

3. Check an attic or crawl space only when access is safe

Use the existing access opening and stable walking surfaces. Look for daylight through a hole, cracked or displaced framing, wet sheathing, fresh debris, displaced insulation, and water trails. Do not step on ceiling drywall, crawl across suspect framing, or place weight on a member that is cracked, wet, or visibly moving. If the route cannot be reached without balancing on framing, stop and arrange professional access.

4. Obtain a qualified roof assessment

The inspector or roofer should identify the affected layers, test the limits of the damage without creating new hazards, and state whether the roof can be safely accessed. Ask for written findings that distinguish emergency protection from permanent work and identify any areas that must remain off-limits.

How to tell whether the decking may be damaged

Roof decking is the structural surface beneath the underlayment and covering. Ground-level clues that warrant a professional assessment include a visible puncture through more than the outer covering, a sag or dip, a broken roof edge, fresh debris inside the attic, daylight where none existed before, wet or softened sheathing, and framing that is cracked, displaced, or separated. A new leak by itself does not prove decking failure, but it does establish that water has crossed a roof layer and needs tracing.

Do not confirm decking condition by walking over the area, pressing on it, or removing covering while standing on an uncertain surface. A qualified worker can expose a controlled inspection area from a safe position and decide whether a panel, rafter, truss, or connection needs repair. When the roof is steep, fragile, wet, or structurally uncertain, access equipment and a fall-protection system are part of the inspection—not optional additions.

Choose between a patch, temporary protection, and professional repair

The correct response depends on more than the size of the visible hole. Use the following decision framework with the inspector’s findings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor Limited patch or seal Temporary cover Professional repair or replacement
Structural integrity Only after the roof is confirmed sound and nonstructural Useful to limit rain while awaiting help; does not stabilize a roof Required for sagging, movement, damaged decking, framing concerns, or uncertain integrity
Extent and location One small, localized defect in an accessible area Any opening that can be covered from a safe position before weather arrives Punctured decking, multiple impact points, damaged penetrations, widespread displacement, or concealed damage
Water or electrical risk Not appropriate where active water reaches wiring or electrical equipment Can reduce additional rain entry after electrical hazards are isolated Needed for ongoing leaks, wet insulation, interior damage, or electrical involvement
Slope and access Only on a sound roof with safe access and suitable fall protection Use a contractor or access equipment for steep, wet, fragile, or unsafe roofs Required when access demands guardrails, scaffolds, an aerial lift, travel restraint, or a personal fall-arrest system
Speed before rain May stop a minor leak after safe confirmation Fastest way to limit additional water when installed without exposing someone to a fall Emergency service is appropriate when the opening is large, water is entering rapidly, or temporary measures cannot be secured
Documentation and warranty Record the exact materials and area repaired; an improvised patch may affect later warranty or claim review Photograph the cover and attachment method, and keep invoices Obtain a written scope, itemized estimate, completion photographs, and any workmanship warranty offered by the contractor
Total repair scope Surface-only work after inspection Short-term protection while the scope is determined Removal and replacement of covering, underlayment, decking, flashing, framing, or interior finishes as required

Installing emergency protection without creating a second accident

A tarp is a water-control measure, not a structural repair. Do not install one yourself if the roof is unstable, steep, wet, icy, fragile, or beyond a safe walking route. Have a qualified contractor use appropriate access equipment when the cover must be placed on the roof.

When a professional installs the cover, it should extend beyond the opening, direct water downhill, and be secured so wind cannot turn its edges into a hazard. Avoid fastening through an area that may contain damaged framing or concealed utilities. The installer should verify that the cover will not block drainage or detach onto people, vehicles, or neighboring property. Keep the tarp in place only until permanent work is completed; inspect it from the ground after severe weather rather than climbing up to adjust it.

When a small patch is reasonable

Minor patching is appropriate only when all of these conditions are met:

  • The roof covering and supporting surface are otherwise sound.
  • There is no sagging, movement, exposed or damaged decking, or widespread moisture.
  • Access is safe without stepping on suspect material.
  • The repair can be completed with the fall protection and training required for the work.

A patch may involve replacing a limited covering piece or sealing a small flashing defect, but the exact material and method must match the existing roof system. If the impact damaged a penetration, seam, or concealed layer, surface sealant alone can hide the problem while water continues below. Have the completed area photographed and described in the repair record.

When professional repair is the only sensible option

Use a qualified roofing contractor or structural professional when the impact punctured or displaced decking, damaged framing, affected a skylight or other penetration, caused more than a localized leak, or left the roof’s integrity uncertain. Professional work is also the appropriate choice for steep or fragile roofs and for any task that requires specialized fall-protection equipment.

A sound repair scope should identify the damaged layers, the area to be removed, replacement materials, flashing and water-management details, interior drying or finish work, and the method for protecting occupants during construction. Keep the scope and final invoice with your photographs and dated log. Local building codes, permit rules, lease terms, and insurance policies may add requirements that are not covered by a general roof inspection.

Fall protection and worker training

OSHA identifies guardrails, scaffolds, aerial lifts, travel-restraint systems, and personal fall-arrest systems as possible controls for roof work. Selecting among them requires a hazard evaluation, suitable anchorage and equipment, worker training, and a rescue plan. OSHA’s residential roof-repair guidance states: The employer shall provide a training program for each worker who might be exposed to fall hazards.

The cited OSHA low-slope-roof definition uses a maximum slope of 4 in 12. A roof at or below that slope is not automatically safe: openings, edges, weather, fragile materials, debris, and the impact damage itself still require controls. An OSHA interpretation dated March 2, 2010, warns that combining inspection activities can distract an inspector and increase the risk of falling 40 feet to a lower level. That is why taking photographs is not a justification for entering an uncertain roof area.

Build documentation that separates impact damage from pre-existing conditions

Photographs and a timeline help show what changed. Preserve the original files rather than relying only on edited or compressed copies. A useful record contains:

  • Wide and close photographs of every affected roof elevation, interior room, attic area, gutter, and penetration
  • Video or photographs of active water, moving components, and debris before cleanup
  • Date, time, weather, witness names, and a description of the impact
  • Drone or flight details available from the operator, plus any incident or law-enforcement number
  • Maintenance records, prior inspection reports, and photographs showing the roof’s condition before the event
  • Contractor inspection notes, estimates, permits when applicable, invoices, and completion photographs
  • A dated repair log recording temporary covers, water removal, drying, and each permanent repair

FEMA inspection material explains that an inspection considers whether the exterior, including the roof, is structurally sound; it is not the same service as insurance adjusting. Maintenance records and pre-existing roof problems matter when separating impact damage from earlier deterioration. Give the adjuster and contractor the same dated evidence, and identify uncertainty rather than attributing every old stain or worn area to the drone strike.

Does the drone incident have to be reported to the FAA?

Under 14 CFR 107.9, the remote pilot in command of a small unmanned aircraft must report a qualifying accident to the Federal Aviation Administration within 10 calendar days. The criteria include serious injury, loss of consciousness, or property damage above the regulatory threshold. For property damage, the 2022 amendment provides an exception when repair cost does not exceed $500, or when a total loss has a fair-market value of no more than $500.

The reporting duty is tied to the remote pilot and the federal rule; a property owner should not assume that the operator has reported merely because the operator promised to do so. Preserve the impact evidence and ask the pilot for confirmation of any required report. Local authorities, airport rules, state law, or an insurer may impose additional reporting or notice requirements.

Should you call an insurer or a roofer first?

Handle immediate hazards first. If water is near electrical equipment, obtain qualified electrical assistance; if the roof is sagging, moving, or shedding material, keep clear and request emergency roof or structural help. When the property is safe to document, arrange an inspection so the damage can be contained and its scope identified.

Notify your insurer according to the policy’s notice requirements and keep the claim number with the repair file. Ask whether the insurer wants to inspect before non-emergency materials are removed. Do not delay a necessary temporary measure that prevents additional damage, but photograph the condition before and after it is installed and retain every invoice. Coverage, deductibles, depreciation, and responsibility for the drone are policy- and fact-specific; neither a contractor’s estimate nor an FAA report by itself guarantees payment.

Common problems and the safer response

No hole is visible, but water appears later

Water may be entering at a displaced flashing, seam, or penetration and traveling before it reaches the ceiling. Record the timing and location of each drip, then have a professional trace the path. Do not seal the interior stain without finding the exterior entry point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The tarp shifts or fills with water

Keep people away from the roof and the area below it. From the ground, photograph the condition and call the installer or an emergency contractor. Climbing up in wind or rain to tighten a cover can create a greater hazard than the original leak.

The roof looks old, so responsibility is disputed

Use dated maintenance records and pre-impact photographs to identify pre-existing wear. Keep impact observations separate from older deterioration in the estimate and repair log. A qualified inspection can describe which components are consistent with a new strike and which are not.

The roof cannot be reached safely

That is an access decision, not a reason to take a risk. Request a contractor who can provide a suitable scaffold, lift, guardrail, travel-restraint, or fall-arrest arrangement and explain the rescue plan before work starts.

The drone operator will not cooperate

Preserve your own evidence, obtain witness details, and follow the applicable insurance and local reporting process. The FAA rule places the qualifying accident report on the remote pilot in command, but the property owner should still document the damage and avoid making assumptions about liability.
