It can be formally symmetrical or crisp and contemporary; the key is to plan the structure around the actual site, test it at full size and choose planting that suits both the conditions and the upkeep you can manage.
What geometric design can do for a garden
Geometry organizes paths, lawn, beds and focal points into a legible composition. A central axis, repeated rectangles, parallel lines or circular forms can create order without requiring every plant or feature to be mirrored. Balance can also come from arranging different heights, colors and masses so their visual weight feels even. Penn State Extension’s design principles describe repetition as a way to link elements and guide the eye; too much variety can feel chaotic, while too little can look uniform.
There are two useful starting points. A formal scheme tends toward symmetry, strong lines and clipped structure. A contemporary scheme can retain crisp geometry while allowing asymmetrical balance and a more architectural planting palette. Neither is inherently better: the right choice depends on the building, boundaries, fixed features and the time available for maintenance. The RHS notes that formal gardens can suit small urban spaces as well as larger gardens.
How to plan a geometric garden layout
1. Measure and map the existing site
Start with a measured plan rather than a preferred pattern. Sketch the house, boundaries, doors and windows, established trees, structures and other features that will remain. Record the garden’s actual shape—including irregular edges—and note where sunlight falls. Transfer the measurements to a scale drawing so the proposed layout can be checked before materials are ordered or construction begins.

The RHS garden-planning guide presents this approach from Adam Frost, a Garden Designer, Horticulturist and RHS Ambassador. A scale plan helps work out material quantities and makes it easier to revise a design before committing to built work.
2. Choose a geometric vocabulary
Pick one main form or organizing line, then use it to connect the garden’s parts. For example, a rectangle might shape a terrace and lawn, with parallel planting strips reinforcing the direction; a central axis might align a path, focal feature and beds. Repeating a small number of forms usually makes the design easier to read than introducing many unrelated shapes.

Decide how much symmetry the site can support. A formal plan can mirror beds or paths around an axis. If the house, boundary or existing trees make that impractical, keep the geometry but balance visual weight with different combinations of height, color and plant mass. This is asymmetrical balance, not a failure to achieve symmetry.
3. Draw the pattern, then mark it out
Draw complex planting patterns to scale before buying plants. For intricate shapes or small planting blocks, the RHS bedding-display guidance recommends graph paper. On the ground, use string to establish straight edges and a garden hose to test a curved border, following the RHS border guide.

View the outline from the places where the garden will actually be seen, such as the house or a seating area. Check that beds have enough room for their intended plants and that paths and other usable areas remain practical. Adjust the marks before cutting turf, building edges or ordering materials.
4. Repeat a few elements to create rhythm
Repetition helps the eye move through a design. Carry a small set of shapes, colors, materials or plant forms into more than one area: recurring rounded or columnar silhouettes, for instance, can connect separate beds. Contrast can add interest, but too many competing colors, forms or finishes can obscure the underlying pattern.

| Consideration | Formal symmetry | Contemporary or asymmetrical geometry |
|---|---|---|
| Visual effect | Mirrored order, often organized around an axis or focal feature. | Crisp structure with room to balance different forms and masses without mirroring them. |
| Fit with the site | Works when straight lines and a clear axis suit the house, boundaries and fixed features. | Can accommodate a less regular site while retaining a deliberate geometric framework. |
| Planting role | Clipped hedges and topiary can define borders or compartments. | Architectural plants can complement strong shapes and clean lines. |
| Upkeep to consider | Clipping and keeping edges defined take ongoing attention; topiary is rated moderate to difficult by the RHS. | Plant choice still determines pruning and other care; a crisp layout does not make every planting scheme low-maintenance. |
| Space and materials | Measure the actual layout and use a scale plan to establish dimensions, quantities and material needs before construction. | |
The distinctions reflect the RHS description of formal garden structure, its guidance on contemporary planting and Penn State Extension’s explanation of balance. Use them as design choices rather than rules that dictate one universally suitable style.

Choose structural plants for the site and your upkeep capacity
Formal structure: hedges and topiary
Clipped evergreen hedges can define borders or divide a garden into compartments, while topiary adds living geometric forms. The RHS formal-plant guidance identifies box as a classic hedge choice, but notes box blight and box tree caterpillar as reasons to consider alternatives such as yew, beech or holly. Check local suitability and current plant-health guidance before selecting a species.
The RHS defines topiary as training shrubs or trees, typically evergreens, into stylized forms; box, holly and yew are among its examples. Its moderate-to-difficult rating is a useful reminder that maintaining a precise living shape requires commitment.
Contemporary structure: architectural planting
Contemporary planting can emphasize distinctive form and strong silhouettes rather than clipped symmetry. The RHS contemporary-plant guide discusses bamboo as one example, while noting that its size and vigor vary and that it prefers sheltered, well-drained conditions. Treat those site requirements and the plant’s eventual scale as part of the design, not details to check after planting.
Check growing conditions before choosing
For every proposed plant, verify the light and soil conditions, mature height and spread, and care needs. The RHS border-planning guidance also points to the gardener’s available time for tasks such as pruning, staking, deadheading, lifting or dividing. A plan that looks geometric on paper will only remain legible if its plants can thrive in the site and be maintained at their intended size.
