How to Improve Indoor Ventilation and Air Quality at Home

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Improve indoor air by reducing pollution at its source, ventilating with outdoor air when conditions are suitable, and using filtration for pollutants a filter can capture. Fix moisture problems directly. No single ventilation rate or air cleaner suits every home: building design, local requirements, outdoor conditions and equipment compatibility matter.

Start by reducing pollution at its source

Source control is usually the most effective first step and can cost less than increasing ventilation, which may add energy costs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) puts it plainly: “Usually the most effective way to improve indoor air quality is to eliminate individual sources of pollution or to reduce their emissions.” EPA: Improving Indoor Air Quality

Common indoor sources include cooking, cleaning products, tobacco smoke, building materials and furnishings, occupants’ activities, moisture, and soil gases such as radon. Outdoor pollution can also enter a home. Reduce or remove the source where possible; for example, avoid indoor smoking and follow product directions when using paints, cleaners or other materials that release fumes.

For work that generates dust or fumes—such as painting, sanding or soldering—work outdoors when practical. Otherwise, increase ventilation if it is safe and outdoor conditions are suitable. A cleaner cannot compensate for an ongoing source that can be removed or controlled.

Ventilate with outdoor air when conditions allow

Opening windows and doors can bring outdoor air inside, while kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans can remove pollutants and moisture near where they are produced. Check that an exhaust fan actually vents outdoors. Exhausting indoor air also draws replacement air into the home.

Use outdoor-air ventilation selectively. Do not open windows or increase outdoor-air intake when outdoor pollution or smoke is high, humidity is excessive, weather is extreme, or doing so would be unsafe. If outdoor air is unsuitable, rely on source control and appropriate filtration until conditions improve.

Some homes have mechanical systems designed to supply outdoor air. A heat-recovery ventilator (HRV) can exchange indoor and outdoor air while reducing the conditioning burden of incoming air. A typical residential forced-air heating or cooling system does not necessarily bring outdoor air into the home; circulation through a furnace or air-handler filter is not the same as ventilation.

Ventilation rates depend on the building and location

EPA’s home ventilation FAQ cites ASHRAE Standard 62.2-2016, which recommended 0.35 air changes per hour, but not less than 15 cubic feet per minute per person, for residential buildings. This is a benchmark attributed to that 2016 edition—not a universal current code requirement. Applicable local codes, later standard editions, building design and combustion equipment can change what is required. For a project involving a new or altered ventilation system, check local requirements and have the design evaluated for the specific home.

Choose filtration for the pollutant you need to address

Air cleaners can reduce some airborne particles, but no filter removes every pollutant. Filtration supplements source control and ventilation; it does not replace either. Match the equipment to the contaminant, room or system, and maintenance you can sustain. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home explains these limits and selection factors.

For particles: size a portable cleaner to the space

For particle removal, compare a portable cleaner’s clean air delivery rate (CADR) with the room size. A higher CADR can handle more particles and larger spaces. Of the common CADR ratings, the tobacco-smoke rating is the relevant one for smaller particles. In an open-plan area, account for the full space; allow for higher ceilings as well.

  • Remarkable Filtration: Featuring an advanced filtration system, the air purifier effectively removes airborne particles (such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke ). When activated, this air cleaner can refresh the atmosphere in a space up to 2400 sq ft / 223 m² every 30 minutes, ensuring you enjoy a fresh and comfortable air quality throughout the day in your home or office. (Note: For significant amounts of pet hair on floors or fabric surfaces, we recommend use other cleaning products.)
  • 3-Stage Advanced Filtration: Our air filter combines a high-efficiency purification filter with 3 layers to can effectively filter out the impurities in the air. This high-performance system delivers thorough air purification, creating a healthier living environment for you and your loved one. (Note: The filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 6 months, and must not be cleaned with water or other liquids.)

Higher fan speeds and longer operating times generally filter more air, but noise can affect whether people keep a unit running. Consider noise, airflow obstruction, likely run time and replacement-filter needs alongside coverage. A portable HEPA cleaner is a reasonable category to consider for particles, but its suitability depends on its rated coverage and CADR.

For gases, odors and VOCs: look beyond particle CADR

Particle CADR does not measure removal of gases, odors or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For those pollutants, look for activated carbon or another absorbent filter specifically designed for gas removal. There is no widely used rating system for gas removal, and a substantial amount of carbon is important. Replace filters as directed; a particle-focused cleaner without an appropriate gas filter should not be assumed to remove fumes or odors.

For central HVAC: use only a compatible filter

Choose the highest-rated replacement filter your heating or cooling system can accommodate without restricting airflow. EPA says filters rated MERV 13 and above must demonstrate at least 50% removal efficiency for the smallest particles tested. That rating does not mean every system can safely use such a filter. Check the equipment manufacturer’s guidance or ask a qualified HVAC professional before changing to a higher-resistance filter.

Avoid air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone. An ENERGY STAR label indicates energy efficiency, not air-cleaning effectiveness.

Address moisture and mold at the source

EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. If you find mold or notice a musty odor, identify and fix the water or moisture problem, then clean the mold. An air cleaner may collect some airborne mold-related particles, but it will not stop water intrusion or resolve the dampness causing growth.

Use a practical order of operations

  1. Identify likely sources. Consider cooking, cleaning, smoke, materials and furnishings, dust-producing work, moisture and pollutants entering from outdoors.
  2. Reduce or remove what you can. Control emissions at the source before relying on a larger fan or air cleaner.
  3. Exhaust locally and ventilate selectively. Use outdoor-vented kitchen and bathroom fans; open windows or increase outdoor-air supply only when outdoor conditions and safety allow.
  4. Choose filtration for the remaining problem. Use CADR and room size for particles, a suitable gas filter for gases or VOCs, and an HVAC filter compatible with the system.
  5. Maintain the controls. Replace filters as directed, keep exhaust paths usable, and correct leaks or other moisture sources rather than treating their symptoms.

People spend about 90 percent of their time indoors on average, according to an EPA factsheet published in July 2025. That makes it worthwhile to consider indoor air as part of home upkeep, but it does not establish a specific health effect or ventilation design for any one household. EPA: Factsheet: What Is Indoor Air Quality?

These recommendations are for household readers in the U.S. Commercial buildings and complex HVAC systems need building-specific interpretation. Houseplants have not been shown to remove significant quantities of pollutants in ordinary homes or offices, so they are not a substitute for source control, ventilation or suitable filtration.
