A portable HEPA air cleaner can filter airborne dust in the room where it runs; a central HVAC filter can filter dust in air moving through a compatible forced-air system. They can be used together. Choose a portable cleaner by its dust clean air delivery rate (CADR) for the room, and choose an HVAC filter by its MERV rating only after confirming the system can handle it. Neither option removes dust already settled on surfaces.
How the two options differ
| Decision | Portable HEPA air cleaner | Central HVAC filter |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | The room or area where the unit is placed. | Air circulated through the home’s central system. |
| When it filters | While the cleaner is running. Higher fan speed and longer operating time move more air through its filter. | While the HVAC system operates. Running its fan more often can increase filtration, with practical and energy implications. |
| What to check | Dust CADR suited to room area, ceiling height, noise, and replacement-filter requirements. | MERV rating, exact filter dimensions, and compatibility with the system’s fan and filter slot. |
| Main limitation | Requires placement and operation, and primarily serves its room or area. | Requires forced-air equipment and suitable airflow; filtration depends on system operation. |
HEPA and MERV are not interchangeable ratings. HEPA describes particle-capture efficiency at a specified size; MERV compares HVAC filter capture across particle-size ranges. Neither rating by itself tells you how quickly a whole room will be cleaned. EPA’s HEPA explanation and its MERV rating guide explain the distinction.

Choosing a portable HEPA cleaner for a room
Start with the room’s floor area and the cleaner’s dust CADR, not the word “HEPA” alone. CADR reflects how much filtered air the unit delivers; a highly efficient filter in a low-airflow device may not clean a room as quickly as a higher-CADR unit. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home gives estimated minimum dust CADRs for an 8-foot ceiling:

|---|---|
| 100 sq. ft. | 65 cfm |
| 200 sq. ft. | 130 cfm |
| 300 sq. ft. | 195 cfm |
| 400 sq. ft. | 260 cfm |
| 500 sq. ft. | 325 cfm |
| 600 sq. ft. | 390 cfm |
These are EPA estimates from its 2018 guide, not guarantees. Higher ceilings may call for a higher CADR. If the area is open to adjoining spaces, a rating based only on one room’s floor area may not represent the full space the cleaner needs to serve.

- Check the product’s stated dust CADR and the area it is intended to serve.
- Consider whether the noise at a useful fan speed will let you run it as often as needed.
- Check how the model’s filter is replaced and the manufacturer’s replacement guidance; filters are model-specific, so confirm compatibility before buying replacements.
- Avoid ozone-generating cleaners. EPA identifies ozone as a lung irritant and cautions that some air-cleaning technologies may emit it.
Choosing an HVAC filter without overloading the system
For a central forced-air system, EPA recommends MERV 13, or the highest rating the system’s fan and filter slot can accommodate. Do not assume every furnace or air handler can use MERV 13: check the equipment manual and filter dimensions, and ask the manufacturer or an HVAC technician if compatibility is unclear. A filter that restricts airflow beyond what the equipment can handle is not a safe upgrade simply because its MERV rating is higher.
At MERV 13, EPA reports average capture efficiencies of at least 50% for particles from 0.30–1.0 µm, 85% for 1.0–3.0 µm, and 90% for 3.0–10.0 µm. Those figures describe average filter performance in the listed particle ranges; they are not a promise that the filter removes those proportions of all dust throughout a home. See EPA’s MERV table and Indoor Air Filtration guidance.

Use the exact size specified for the equipment, install it in the correct direction, and replace it according to the system or filter instructions. A dirty or overloaded filter will not work well. The HVAC filter only filters air when the system moves air through it; operating the fan more continuously can increase filtration but also has energy and operating considerations.
What filtration can—and cannot—do about dust
Both approaches act on airborne particles that pass through their filters. Dust that has already settled on floors, shelves, furnishings, or other surfaces still needs ordinary cleaning. Filtration is therefore most useful as one part of dust management, alongside reducing sources and ventilating with clean outdoor air when conditions permit.

EPA says a HEPA filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles at 0.3 microns, including dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria. That is a filter-efficiency figure at a particular particle size, not a claim that a purifier removes 99.97% of dust from a room or home. Airflow, device operation, and whether particles reach the filter also matter. EPA notes that no air cleaner or filter eliminates all indoor air pollutants; filtration complements source control and clean-air ventilation. See the EPA HEPA explanation and its consumer guide.
When to use one—or both
Choose a portable cleaner when
- You want filtration focused on a particular occupied room or area.
- You do not have central forced-air HVAC, or your system cannot accommodate a higher-efficiency filter.
- You can select a sufficient dust CADR and operate the unit regularly.
Choose an HVAC filter upgrade when
- Your home has central forced-air equipment that circulates air through a filter.
- You want filtration across the air the system moves, rather than only in one placed room.
- The equipment can accommodate the chosen MERV rating and correctly sized filter.
Use both when
You want room-level filtration in a priority space as well as filtration of air circulated by a compatible central system. They serve different coverage patterns, so one does not make the other redundant. Continue normal cleaning for settled dust and follow the operating and replacement guidance for each device.

Sources and limits
EPA does not certify or recommend specific air-cleaner or filter brands or models. The agency also describes evidence about health-study results as limited and not consistently noticeable, so filtration should not be presented as a guaranteed health treatment. Its technical summary, Residential Air Cleaners: A Technical Summary, third edition (2018), provides further context on residential particle filtration.
