For a suitable low-voltage DC circuit, check the equipment’s + and − markings first. If the wires are unmarked, a properly rated digital multimeter set to DC voltage can identify their relative polarity. In household AC wiring, do not look for “positive” and “negative”: identify conductors by function—line, neutral, and equipment ground—and do not use a polarity check to decide whether wiring is safe to touch.
First determine whether the circuit is DC or AC
Positive and negative describe polarity in direct-current (DC) circuits. Alternating-current (AC) premises wiring is described by conductor function: line or ungrounded, grounded conductor (commonly called neutral), and equipment grounding conductor. These terms are not interchangeable. In particular, ground is not another name for DC negative, and neutral is not positive or negative.
For US construction wiring, OSHA’s 1926.404 wiring-design requirements prohibit reversing designated polarity by attaching a grounded conductor to the wrong terminal or lead, and restrict grounding terminals to grounding purposes. OSHA’s 1926.405 wiring-methods requirements call for conductors to be distinguishable as grounded, ungrounded, or equipment grounding conductors. These are US construction requirements, not a universal residential color chart.
Check DC equipment markings before using a meter
Look for plus and minus signs on the power source, device, connector, or wiring diagram. The IEC symbol reference from Philips maps + to positive polarity and − to negative polarity; the DC symbol identifies direct-current equipment or terminals. Follow the equipment documentation if its markings are unclear.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.

Wire color can be a clue only when you know the applicable convention and the equipment documentation confirms it. Color conventions vary by device, location, and wiring history, so insulation color alone does not prove polarity or conductor function.
Use a digital multimeter to check suitable DC wires
If a low-voltage DC pair is unmarked, a correctly rated digital multimeter can measure voltage across the two points and show their relative polarity. Check the circuit’s expected voltage, the meter and lead ratings, and both manuals first. This is not an instruction for probing household mains wiring, a panel, or an unfamiliar circuit.

- CONVENIENT FEATURES: Test lead holders on the back of the meter, kickstand and optional magnetic hanger (Cat. Nos. 69445 or 69417) for hands-free operation
- Confirm the circuit and meter are appropriate. Identify the source and expected voltage. Verify that the meter and leads are rated for that circuit and that the instructions allow the measurement.
- Select DC voltage. Choose the DC voltage setting; on many meters the symbol is a solid line over a dashed line.
- Check the lead sockets. Put the black lead in COM and the red lead in the voltage input, commonly marked V or V Ω. Do not use the current input jack to measure voltage. Fluke warns: “Placing test probes in A or mA inputs and then measuring voltage will create a short in the measurement circuit.”
- Measure across the pair. Touch one probe to each measurement point without letting the probes bridge conductors. Fluke’s procedure for known polarity is to connect black to the negative test point and red to the positive test point.
- Read the sign. A positive displayed value means the red probe is at the more positive point relative to the black probe. A negative sign means the probes are reversed relative to the meter’s display convention. Swap them to confirm.
- Finish safely. Remove the probes and follow the meter’s instructions.
A reading identifies relative polarity at the points measured. It does not establish that an unknown circuit is de-energized or safe to handle. For Fluke’s meter guidance, see How to Measure DC Voltage with a Digital Multimeter.
Do not use an AC tester to identify DC polarity
A non-contact voltage tester can be a screening tool for some AC voltage situations, but it does not determine which of two DC wires is positive. OSHA’s 1991 field-service memo also notes that non-contact tracers are not effective for determining voltage on wires inside metal conduit or tubing. A polarity measurement and a determination that a circuit is safe are different tasks.

When to stop and get qualified help
- The wiring is household AC, in a panel, or otherwise unfamiliar.
- You cannot establish the circuit type or expected voltage, or the meter or leads are not clearly rated for it.
- The device markings and documentation do not let you identify a suitable low-voltage DC measurement point.
Do not use an ordinary polarity check to decide that unknown or mains wiring is safe. For household wiring or an unfamiliar circuit, use a qualified electrician.
