How to Identify and Control Leafhoppers in Your Garden

Check leaf undersides for leafhoppers or shed skins before treating. Most garden sightings call for monitoring; row covers can help protect susceptible vegetables.

Leafhoppers are small, wedge-shaped insects that jump or dart away when disturbed. They can leave pale specks, bleaching, curled leaves, or stunted growth, but those symptoms alone do not confirm leafhoppers. Check the undersides of affected leaves for the insects or their shed skins before deciding whether to act. In many home gardens, monitoring is all that is needed.

How to identify leafhoppers

Adult leafhoppers are small, wedge-shaped insects with wings folded over the back. Many garden species are pale green, but their size and color vary. Nymphs are smaller, wingless, and may move sideways. When you tap or disturb an affected plant, adults and nymphs may jump or scurry away.

Look closely at leaf undersides and new growth for active insects and pale, shed skins. A white or pale stippled leaf by itself is not enough to diagnose leafhoppers; mites, thrips, lace bugs, plant bugs, drought, nutrient problems, and disease can cause similar symptoms. Compare the damage with the plant’s growing conditions, too.

UC IPM gives a length of roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch for adults found on turf. That measurement is specific to turf guidance and should not be treated as a size rule for every garden species. UC IPM’s home and landscape guide and the UC guide to leafhoppers in lawns describe identification in those respective settings.

What leafhopper damage looks like

Leafhoppers feed on plant tissues. Depending on the species and host, feeding may cause tiny pale or white spots (stippling), broader bleaching, distorted or curled new growth, yellowing, browning, or stunting. Potato leafhopper feeding can cause “hopperburn”: leaf tips or margins curl, turn yellow and brown, and become brittle.

Some species produce honeydew, which can support sooty mold. Damage varies, so a leafhopper sighting does not by itself show that a plant has a pathogen or that the insect is responsible for every symptom.

When leafhoppers need control

Most garden sightings do not require spraying. UC IPM says leafhoppers are often an annoyance or curiosity and generally do not need control in gardens and landscapes. Maryland Extension likewise generally does not recommend control on herbaceous annual and perennial plants. If the insects are few and the plant remains healthy, keep watch for fresh injury rather than treating on sight.

Some leafhoppers and sharpshooters transmit plant pathogens, including Xylella fastidiosa in certain host-and-strain combinations. That does not mean every leafhopper carries disease. UC IPM cautions that insecticides in gardens and landscapes generally are not effective at preventing diseases vectored by leafhoppers, because transmission can occur before an insect is killed. A routine spray is not a reliable disease-prevention measure.

A practical plan for managing leafhoppers

1. Confirm the pest and track fresh damage

  1. Inspect affected leaves, especially their undersides, and examine new growth for nymphs, adults, and cast skins.
  2. Disturb the plant gently and watch for insects that jump or move quickly.
  3. Check whether new injury is spreading. If signs are limited and the plant is healthy, continue monitoring.
  4. If the diagnosis is uncertain, symptoms are severe, or disease is a concern, ask a local extension office or plant diagnostic service for guidance.

2. Protect susceptible vegetables before insects arrive

A floating row cover can help keep leafhoppers off susceptible vegetables. Maryland Extension advises putting it in place as seedlings emerge or when transplants are planted. Check that insects are not already trapped beneath the cover. Crop requirements vary; covers may need adjustment or removal for flowering and pollination, so use local, crop-specific guidance. Maryland Extension’s home-garden guidance and UC IPM’s cucurbit guidelines provide relevant examples.

Manage weeds that may serve as alternate hosts, and preserve natural enemies. Spiders, lady beetles, lacewings, and other beneficial insects help suppress leafhopper populations.

  • GARDEN INSECT KILLER - Potassium salts of fatty acids weaken insects' outer shell, dehydrating them and killing on contact

3. Treat selectively if the infestation warrants it

For abundant early-season nymphs, UC IPM lists horticultural oil, insecticidal soap, or neem oil as options in some situations, applied thoroughly to green shoots and leaf undersides. Maryland Extension also lists registered insecticidal soap, horticultural oil, neem, or pyrethrum for large vegetable populations and notes that repeated applications may be needed. These are conditional source recommendations, not universal directions for every plant or garden.

Before using any product, confirm that its label permits use on the specific crop and site, follow all label directions and local rules, and take steps to protect beneficial insects. Contact sprays are less useful against mobile adults; insects may also reinvade after treatment. Avoid broad or repeated treatment unless the plant, population, and product label justify it.

Why advice varies by crop and region

Leafhopper species, host plants, local conditions, and production systems differ. Scouting thresholds reported for commercial crops are not universal treatment thresholds for home gardens. For a severe infestation, an unusual host, or suspected disease, seek local extension advice and use only products registered for your location and labeled for the intended use. Illinois Extension’s leafhopper information provides crop-management context; its commercial guidance should not be treated as a home-garden rule.
