Then compare the best match with a reliable plant reference. Treat a photo result as a clue, not proof, especially before making decisions about toxicity or whether a plant is safe to eat.
Start with any label or care information
Before using an app, check the nursery tag, pot label, or care card that came with the plant. A partial name or handwritten note can narrow the search; keep it as a lead until the plant’s visible features support it.
Photograph the plant so its features are visible
Take one clear, close photograph of the plant, then add close-ups of typical leaves and flowers if it has them. Avoid relying on a distant shot or an image where leaves overlap heavily. NC State Extension advises: “A successful identification from a photo requires a good, clear, close-up photograph of the plant, especially of the flowers and the leaves.” Its guidance was updated August 21, 2025. NC State Extension’s plant-identification guide also notes that a phone’s location data being enabled can affect whether identification succeeds.
If you use Pl@ntNet, its service accepts up to four images for one plant. Pl@ntNet’s World flora page states that its selection includes 84,690 species; that is the service’s stated catalogue selection, not a count of houseplants or a measure of identification accuracy.

Record several features, not just leaf shape
Before searching, describe what you can see. Note the plant’s overall growth form, leaf shape and arrangement, stem details, and flowers if present. These combined observations help you judge whether a suggested name fits. A single leaf feature is not enough to reliably identify every houseplant.
Montana State University Extension’s plant identification basics explains foundational identification methods that can be used alongside an app, field guide, or dichotomous key.

Use a photo tool to generate candidate names
Try a phone feature such as iPhone Look Up or Google Lens, or a free plant-identification app such as iNaturalist or PlantNet, which NC State Extension lists among possible tools. The result is a starting point: available tools can return candidates, but the sources cited here do not establish a houseplant-specific error rate or rank these tools by accuracy.
Verify the suggested name against another reference
Compare the candidate’s description and additional images with your plant. Check leaf arrangement, stems, growth habit, and flowers where available; note any clear mismatch rather than forcing the identification. Where possible, use a second reference that is independent of the tool that suggested the name.

Coverage matters. Pl@ntNet uses selected floras and says it may direct users to another flora when the current one does not contain the plant. NC State Extension also cautions that books and guides may have incomplete or geographically limited coverage. If you choose a houseplant identification book or illustrated guide, check that it covers the plants and region relevant to you.
Be cautious when identification affects safety
Montana State University Extension notes that plant identification matters because some plants are toxic. Do not treat a photo match as proof that a plant is safe for people or pets, and do not eat an unidentified plant. When a possible exposure or other safety concern is involved, use an appropriate expert or poison-control resource rather than relying on an app result.

What a photo identification can—and cannot—tell you
A clear photograph and several matching features can help narrow down a plant’s name, but the available sources do not establish a general accuracy percentage for identifying houseplants from photos. Location information, image quality, and the tool’s flora coverage can all affect whether it returns a useful candidate. Once you have a well-supported name, use a care reference such as Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s houseplant care guide for follow-on care information.
