How to Hook Up TV Ears: A Step-by-Step Guide for Enhanced TV Listening

Connect TV Ears correctly by matching the transmitter to your TV’s audio output, selecting PCM for optical audio, charging the headset, and troubleshooting common sound and range problems.

To hook up TV Ears, connect its transmitter to your television’s audio output, plug in the transmitter, charge the headset in its cradle, and turn the headset on. Optical connections usually work best on newer TVs, but 3.5-mm and red-and-white RCA connections are also common. If optical audio produces silence or static, change the TV’s digital audio format to PCM.

TV Ears is a product family, so the exact cables, charging method, pairing procedure, and range depend on whether you have an Original, Digital, Long Range, Bluetooth, Speaker, or Dual Digital system.

  • Original: Primarily designed for analog 3.5-mm or RCA audio outputs.
  • Digital or 5.8 Digital: Typically supports optical digital audio as well as analog connections.
  • Long Range: Designed for greater range and use through walls; pairing and secure-mode instructions differ from infrared systems.
  • Bluetooth: Uses Bluetooth-specific connection and pairing instructions.
  • Speaker: Uses a nearby speaker rather than, or in addition to, a headset.
  • Dual Digital: May support multiple receivers and has different coverage claims from standard Original and Digital systems.

Do not mix instructions from different product families. TV Ears provides model-specific manuals and quick-install guides on its support page.

What you need

  • The TV Ears transmitter and compatible headset or speaker
  • The correct audio cable
  • The supplied power adapter or approved power cable
  • The television remote
  • An optional HDMI ARC audio extractor if the TV has no usable audio output

Find the right TV audio connection

TV port Connection method Important consideration
Optical Out or Digital Audio Out Optical/TOSLINK cable Set digital audio output to PCM if there is silence or static.
3.5-mm Audio Out, AUX, or Headphone 3.5-mm-to-3.5-mm cable A headphone jack may mute or alter the TV’s built-in speakers.
Red-and-white RCA Audio Out 3.5-mm-to-RCA cable Match red to red and white or black to the other channel.
No usable audio output HDMI ARC extractor or a cable/satellite box output The extractor may require separate power and an HDMI cable.
Digital coaxial output Model-specific coaxial solution A round digital-coaxial jack is not the same as an optical jack.

The current TV Ears 5.0 Digital System is supplied with optical, 3.5-mm, and 3.5-mm-to-RCA connection options. Use only one audio connection initially so troubleshooting remains straightforward.

How to install TV Ears

1. Inspect the television’s audio output

Pause or turn off the TV and inspect the back or side for labels such as Optical Out, Digital Audio Out, Audio Out, Headphone, AUX, or red-and-white audio outputs.

Do not plug the transmitter into an ordinary HDMI input. HDMI can be used only as part of an ARC/eARC audio-extraction setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Position the transmitter

Place the transmitter on a stable, flat surface where it faces the normal seating area. TV Ears’ general guidance recommends positioning the transmitter approximately 3 to 5 feet above the floor; see the manufacturer’s speaker setup guidance for related placement information.

Standard Original and Digital systems use infrared transmission, so the headset needs a clear line of sight to the transmitter. Do not hide the transmitter inside a cabinet or behind the TV. TV Ears lists coverage of up to 600 square feet for Original and Digital systems and up to 2,000 square feet for Dual Digital. These are manufacturer coverage claims, not guaranteed room dimensions; walls, furniture, placement, and layout affect performance.

3. Connect power

Plug the supplied power adapter into the transmitter’s power socket, then connect it to a wall outlet or approved power source. Confirm that the transmitter’s power indicator illuminates.

Some newer speaker or Long Range products use USB or USB-C power rather than the older adapter arrangement. Follow the manual for your specific model and do not substitute a charger with unknown voltage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Connect one audio cable

Choose the connection that matches the TV port.

Optical connection

  1. Remove the protective caps from both ends of the optical cable.
  2. Plug one end into the TV’s Optical Out or Digital Audio Out port.
  3. Plug the other end into the transmitter’s Digital Input or Optical port.
  4. Align the plug with the jack and press gently until it is fully seated. Do not force it.

The plug should fit in a particular orientation and generally clicks into place. The official TV Ears 5.0 quick-install guide illustrates the correct cable position.

3.5-mm connection

  1. Plug one end of the 3.5-mm cable into the TV’s headphone or audio-output jack.
  2. Plug the other end into the transmitter’s analog input.
  3. Select the transmitter’s analog input if your model has an input selector.

If the TV speakers stop working, check the television’s sound settings. Some TVs automatically mute internal speakers when a headphone plug is inserted.

RCA connection

  1. Connect the red plug to the TV’s red audio output.
  2. Connect the white or black plug to the matching left-channel output.
  3. Connect the single 3.5-mm plug to the transmitter’s analog input.

Push each connector in fully. An RCA connection is suitable for an Original transmitter when the TV provides analog output. TV Ears describes the Original transmitter as intended for 3.5-mm or RCA sources, while a Digital transmitter is the appropriate choice for a TV that offers only optical audio.

5. Set optical audio to PCM

When using optical audio, open the TV’s sound menu and look for a setting similar to:

Settings → Sound or Audio → Advanced or Additional Audio Settings → Digital Audio Output Format → PCM

Choose PCM, Stereo PCM, or LPCM. Avoid Dolby Digital, Bitstream, or DTS when TV Ears produces static or no sound. Menu names vary by television brand, model, and software version.

TV Ears identifies Dolby Digital or DTS output as a common cause of static and silence during optical installation. PCM is particularly important when built-in streaming apps work differently from broadcast channels.

6. Charge the headset

Place the headset into the transmitter’s charging cradle. A charging light should appear when the headset is seated correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For current Original and Digital 5.0 headsets, TV Ears’ current product and support guidance recommends a 14-hour initial charge. Switch the headset fully off before placing it in the cradle; TV Ears warns that charging may fail if the volume control is left on. Owners of older models should follow the manual for that model, because charging instructions vary across the product family.

7. Test and adjust the headset

  1. Turn on the TV and play a program.
  2. Remove the headset from the charging cradle.
  3. Turn on the headset’s volume control.
  4. Raise the volume gradually.
  5. Adjust the tone control if your model includes one.
  6. Sit in the normal viewing position and check speech clarity.

When the TV’s audio output supports independent volume, the headset can often be set louder while other viewers listen through the TV at a different level. This depends on the output type and the television’s sound settings.

Special connection situations

The TV has only HDMI ARC or eARC

If the TV has no optical, RCA, or 3.5-mm output, TV Ears’ support guidance describes using an HDMI ARC audio extractor:

  1. Connect the extractor’s ARC input to the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC.
  2. Use an HDMI cable between the TV and extractor.
  3. Connect the TV Ears transmitter’s analog cable to the extractor’s red-and-white outputs.
  4. Power the extractor, often through USB.
  5. Select the appropriate TV audio output and test the headset.

The extractor may not include an HDMI cable. Some Samsung ARC installations can mute the TV’s internal speakers, so check the television’s behavior if other viewers must continue listening through the TV or a soundbar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TV has no audio output

Possible alternatives include:

  • Connect the transmitter to the audio output of a cable or satellite box.
  • Use an HDMI ARC extractor.
  • Use a suitable audio output from a soundbar, if the soundbar supports the required pass-through or output arrangement.
  • Choose a TV Ears model compatible with the ports available in the system.

A cable-box connection may carry cable channels but not audio from Netflix, Hulu, or other built-in smart-TV apps. For apps running on the TV, connect the transmitter to the TV itself whenever possible.

The TV speakers must remain audible

Optical or RCA output is often preferable when the television can send audio to both its internal speakers and TV Ears. A headphone jack may mute the speakers automatically, although this behavior is TV-specific rather than universal. If the speakers must remain active, check the TV’s audio settings or consider optical, RCA, a compatible soundbar arrangement, or an ARC extractor.

Using TV Ears with Netflix and other streaming apps

When broadcast channels work but Netflix or another built-in app is silent, the app may be outputting Dolby Digital or another format the transmitter cannot decode. Check all of the following:

  • The transmitter is connected to the television, not only to a cable or satellite box.
  • The TV’s digital audio output is set to PCM.
  • The optical cable is plugged into the TV’s output, not an input.
  • The transmitter is set to the correct input.

Troubleshooting TV Ears

No sound at all

  1. Confirm that the transmitter has power.
  2. Confirm that the headset is charged and switched on.
  3. Turn up the headset volume.
  4. Select the correct transmitter input.
  5. Check that the cable is connected to an audio output on the TV.
  6. Confirm that the TV is sending audio through that output.
  7. For optical connections, select PCM.
  8. If using a cable box, test a channel and a built-in TV app separately.
  9. Disconnect the transmitter’s cords for 10 to 20 seconds, reconnect them, and test again.

Static, crackling, or distorted sound

  • Optical format: Change Dolby Digital, DTS, or Bitstream to PCM.
  • Loose plug: Reseat the optical connector until it is fully inserted.
  • Blocked transmitter: Move it out from behind the TV or out of a cabinet.
  • Infrared interruption: Restore a clear line of sight.
  • Long Range interference: Follow the model’s secure-pairing procedure if supported.
  • Cable fault: Test the supplied cable or a known-good replacement.

TV Ears’ Long Range manual describes a Secure mode that can manually pair up to two receivers and may help with cutting out or popping. That procedure does not apply to every TV Ears model.

The headset cuts out

For Original and Digital infrared systems, remain within the transmitter’s line of sight, move the transmitter higher and forward-facing, and remove furniture or other obstructions. For Long Range products, reduce distance and obstructions, then pair the headset again according to its manual if necessary.

The charging light does not appear

  • Switch the headset completely off.
  • Confirm that the transmitter has power.
  • Reseat the headset in the correct cradle.
  • Check that the charging contacts or metal pins are clean, straight, and undamaged.
  • Make sure the headset is resting in the correct position.

TV Ears says the cradle should illuminate when the headset is properly seated and identifies bent charging pins as a possible cause of failed charging.

The headset is too loud or too quiet

  • Adjust the headset volume, not just the TV volume.
  • Reposition the ear tips so they form a comfortable seal.
  • Clean or replace dirty or worn tips.
  • Reduce the volume if sound is uncomfortable.

TV Ears says ear-tip position can substantially affect perceived volume and recommends replacing Slide Tips approximately every 30 days for hygiene and performance. Actual replacement frequency depends on use.

It works in one room but not another

Standard Original and Digital systems use infrared transmission and require line of sight. They are not designed to behave like a whole-home wireless system. Long Range models are intended to work over greater distances and through walls, but their setup and pairing requirements are different. Manufacturer coverage figures should be treated as estimates affected by room layout and obstructions.

Model-specific exceptions

Long Range systems

Long Range systems use a different transmission approach from infrared Original and Digital products. They are the better fit when line-of-sight limitations are unacceptable, but use the supplied manual for power, receiver pairing, Open or Secure mode, and troubleshooting instructions.

Bluetooth models

Bluetooth TV Ears products may require pairing with the television or transmitter. Do not assume that a Bluetooth procedure applies to an Original or Digital infrared system.

Speaker systems

A speaker system can be positioned close to the listener and may be preferable for someone who dislikes a headset. Follow the speaker system instructions for its transmitter, power, and audio connections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hearing comfort and safety

Start at a low volume and increase it only as much as needed for clear speech. TV Ears markets some products with specifications such as “up to 120 dB”; that is a manufacturer specification, not a safe listening recommendation. Avoid prolonged exposure to very loud sound.

TV Ears’ Voice Clarifying Circuitry and speech-frequency descriptions are manufacturer claims, not evidence that the system treats hearing loss. Persistent difficulty understanding speech, sudden hearing changes, ringing, pain, or a need for consistently extreme volume warrants advice from a qualified hearing professional. TV Ears should not be treated as a substitute for prescribed hearing aids or a hearing evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

Can TV Ears work with a smart TV?

Yes, provided the TV has a compatible audio output or is used with an appropriate ARC extractor. For built-in streaming apps, connect to the TV itself and select PCM for optical audio.

Do TV Ears require Bluetooth?

No. Many Original and Digital systems use a dedicated transmitter and do not require Bluetooth pairing. Bluetooth models are a separate product type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is there static with optical?

Change the TV’s digital audio output from Dolby Digital, DTS, or Bitstream to PCM, then reseat the optical cable.

Can two people use TV Ears?

Only when the transmitter and receivers are designed to support multiple compatible receivers. Check the exact model manual rather than assuming any second headset will work.

Can I use TV Ears with a soundbar?

Possibly. The soundbar must provide a compatible audio output or pass-through arrangement. Test whether the soundbar continues to send audio to both the TV Ears transmitter and the household speakers.

Why did connecting the headset mute the TV?

A headphone output may automatically mute the TV’s internal speakers. Try the TV’s speaker settings or use optical or RCA if simultaneous listening is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I connect TV Ears to a cable box?

Yes, if the box has a compatible audio output. This may not carry audio from apps running directly on the TV.

How long should I charge the headset?

For current Original and Digital 5.0 headsets, TV Ears’ current guidance says 14 hours for the initial charge. Older models may specify a different time.

What if my TV has only HDMI?

Use an HDMI ARC audio extractor connected to the TV’s ARC or eARC port, then connect the extractor’s analog outputs to the transmitter.

Do infrared TV Ears work through walls?

Standard Original and Digital infrared systems require line of sight. Long Range products are designed for use through walls and have different setup instructions.
