A patio heater cannot run without using energy, so no fuel-burning or electric model can honestly guarantee an unchanged energy bill. The lowest-cost route is to make the space feel warmer without adding heater energy: choose sun and the warmest part of the day, reduce direct wind safely, and use suitable clothing or blankets. If those steps are not enough, a correctly placed radiant heater can warm the people and surfaces in a seating area rather than trying to heat all the outside air—but its electricity or fuel will add an operating cost.
This guide shows how to sequence those choices, estimate the cost of any heater you use, and install electric or LPG equipment without creating a fire, carbon-monoxide, electrical, or ventilation hazard.

What “without increasing your energy bill” really means
Open patios lose heat quickly. Wind carries warmth away, and there is no enclosure to hold a large volume of warmed air. Any appliance that burns fuel or draws electricity therefore adds consumption. The realistic target is comfort per unit of energy, not zero energy use.

A sunny seating position, a visit during the warmest hours, and clothing suited to the weather cost no additional energy. A windbreak can improve comfort by reducing direct wind, but it must be positioned so it does not block an appliance’s required ventilation or create a stability hazard.

When an appliance is necessary, radiant technology is usually a better match for an open patio than attempting to heat the surrounding air. Radiant output travels to people and objects in its path, so a heater aimed at an occupied seating zone can deliver useful warmth while leaving unoccupied areas unheated. That focus can reduce wasted output, but the appliance still has a measurable running cost.
Start with comfort changes that use no heater energy
Use the sun and the day’s warmest window
Move chairs to a location that receives direct sun and schedule outdoor use for the warmest part of the afternoon when practical. Walls, paving and other mass that have absorbed sunlight can feel warmer after sunset than exposed, shaded surfaces. Observe the site over a day so you know when each seating position receives sun; this is a layout decision, not a promise that the patio will remain warm after dark.
Block direct wind without closing off ventilation
Existing walls, fences and properly secured screens can interrupt wind across the seating area. A portable windbreak or privacy screen may help where the layout is suitable. Keep access routes clear, anchor the screen against gusts, and maintain every clearance and ventilation opening specified for a heater. Never wrap a heater, place it in a tent-like enclosure, or use a screen to turn an outdoor appliance into an indoor one.

Dress for the actual conditions
Insulating layers, a hat, gloves and a blanket over the legs can extend the time people remain comfortable without any appliance. Dry clothing matters: damp fabric conducts heat away from the body faster. These measures are especially effective when only a few people are seated, because you are warming bodies rather than an entire volume of outdoor air.
Why radiant heating suits an open patio
Convection heaters primarily warm air. Outdoors, that air is continually replaced by cooler air, particularly in wind. Radiant heaters instead emit infrared energy that is absorbed by people and objects in the beam. The seating area, rather than the whole patio, becomes the heating target.
A manufacturer installation manual explains the principle this way: “Radiant heaters work like the sun to emit radiant heat directly to the space to increase the comfort of the patio guests.” That is manufacturer guidance, not independent comparative testing, so treat the statement as an explanation of operation rather than a guaranteed efficiency or saving.

Radiant performance depends on aim, distance, mounting height, the heater’s coverage specification and wind. A powerful unit pointed away from the chairs can feel colder than a lower-powered unit correctly aimed at the occupants. Select coverage for the actual seating footprint and expect comfort to fall at the edges of the beam.
Compare the practical heater paths
| Option | How it delivers comfort | What adds to the bill | Key setup issue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passive sun, shelter and clothing | Retains or gains body and surface heat without an appliance | No heater electricity or fuel | Comfort varies with time, weather and safe shelter |
| Electric radiant heater | Directs radiant heat at people and objects in the seating zone | Electricity consumed while switched on | Outdoor-rated connection, stable mounting, cable protection and clearances |
| LPG radiant heater | Burns gas to produce directed radiant and convective heat | LPG consumed during operation | Outdoor ventilation, cylinder handling, wind shelter and manufacturer-approved canopy use |
| Air-source heat pump | Moves heat for building heating systems | Electricity used by the heat-pump system | Home-heating equipment is not automatically suitable for an open patio |
There is no universal cheapest heater. Outdoor temperature, wind, how sheltered the seating is, hours of use, the appliance’s input rating or fuel consumption, and your local electricity or LPG price all change the result. Compare those variables for your site instead of relying on a heater type alone.
Estimate the running cost before you buy or install
Electricity estimate
Find the heater’s input power in kilowatts (kW), not merely its marketing output. Multiply it by the hours you expect to run it and by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh):

energy cost = input power (kW) × runtime (hours) × electricity rate (currency/kWh)
For example, a 2 kW heater used for 3 hours consumes 6 kWh. At an electricity rate of 0.30 per kWh, the energy portion is 1.80 in the same currency. Your bill may also contain standing charges, taxes, delivery fees or tiered rates; this calculation estimates the appliance’s energy cost only. If the heater has multiple settings, calculate each setting separately and use the setting you actually expect to select.
LPG estimate
Use the appliance’s stated fuel consumption, usually expressed as mass or volume per hour, multiply by the planned runtime, and multiply by your current LPG price in the same unit. Include the cost of the fuel that remains unusable when a cylinder is exchanged and any delivery or rental charge. Do not substitute an indoor boiler’s efficiency figure for an outdoor heater’s consumption.

Turn the estimate into a usage plan
- Heat only when people are present; switch the appliance off when the seating area is empty.
- Use the lowest setting that keeps the occupied zone comfortable rather than heating a whole patio.
- Shorten warm-up time by placing chairs in the radiant pattern before switching on.
- Record actual hours for a week and compare them with your estimate; wind and changing temperatures can alter how long you need the heater.
Placement and installation: a safe, efficient sequence
- Map the seating zone. Mark where people sit, where doors open and where children or pets may pass. The heater should aim at this occupied area, not at a boundary, roof or empty garden.
- Read the appliance manual before choosing the mount. Confirm whether the model is approved for wall, ceiling, pole or freestanding installation and note the required height, tilt and clearances. Do not copy a mounting angle from another model.
- Check the exposure. Wind can deflect radiant output and destabilize freestanding equipment. Select a naturally sheltered position or an appropriate windbreak that still allows the ventilation the manual requires.
- Keep combustible materials away. Respect the specified distances from curtains, awnings, timber, plastic furniture, plants and stored fuel. Do not place items above or below an electric heater unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that arrangement.
- Provide a stable base or sound fixing. Anchor a freestanding unit against tipping and use fixings rated for the wall or ceiling structure. A decorative surface is not automatically strong enough to carry an appliance.
- Route services safely. Keep electrical cables out of walking paths, standing water and pinch points. For LPG, keep the cylinder upright and protected from impact, with the regulator and hose arranged exactly as specified.
- Test before regular use. With the area clear, run the heater briefly, verify that controls work, look for abnormal odor, heat damage, flame instability or cable warming, and shut it down immediately if anything is wrong.
Electric patio-heater safety
Electrical Safety First warns that outdoor electric heaters must not be used indoors and that objects should not be placed above or below them. Use only a model approved for outdoor use in your region, with the protection, plug, socket and residual-current protection specified by the manufacturer and local rules. An indoor extension lead or an unprotected socket can introduce shock and fire risks even when the heater itself is weather-rated.
- Keep the plug, connection and controls dry and above areas where water can collect.
- Inspect the cable, plug, housing and mounting before each season and after severe weather.
- Do not cover the heater while it is hot, energized or still connected.
- Switch off and unplug equipment before cleaning, moving or changing its angle.
- Stop using the unit if insulation is cracked, the outlet overheats, a breaker trips repeatedly or the heater behaves erratically; have the fault assessed by a qualified person.
LPG patio-heater safety
Liquid Gas UK guidance limits LPG patio heaters to outdoor use. Keep the appliance in a ventilated location, shelter it from strong wind without enclosing the combustion area, and use a canopy only when the manufacturer permits it and exhaust can escape freely. Combustion consumes oxygen and produces hot gases; a roof, side wall or improvised screen can allow dangerous concentrations to build up.
- Check the hose, regulator, cylinder connection and seals for damage before every use.
- Follow the appliance instructions for cylinder size, upright orientation and connection; never improvise adapters.
- Keep cylinders away from ignition sources, drains and locations where escaping gas could collect.
- If you smell gas, turn off the cylinder if it is safe, extinguish flames, leave the area and follow your supplier’s emergency guidance. Do not operate electrical switches in the suspected gas cloud.
- Allow the appliance to cool before covering or storing it, and store cylinders according to local fire and gas rules.
Do not repurpose heat-pump efficiency claims for a patio
The U.S. Department of Energy says heat pumps can reduce electricity used for building heating by up to 75% compared with electric resistance heating. ENERGY STAR says qualifying air-source heat pumps can deliver up to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy they consume. Those figures describe home-heating systems under their qualifying conditions; they do not establish that a portable patio heater will deliver the same ratio or leave a household bill unchanged.
A heat pump can be sensible for an enclosed room designed for it, but an open patio has continuous air exchange and different installation, drainage and weather-protection requirements. Treat a heat pump as a building-heating decision, not a shortcut around the operating cost and safety rules for outdoor spot heating.
Troubleshoot poor comfort before buying a larger heater
The heater runs, but people still feel cold
- Check that the beam actually reaches the chairs; adjust the approved tilt or seating position.
- Look for crosswinds carrying warmth away and improve shelter without blocking ventilation.
- Confirm that the unit’s rated coverage matches the number of seats and mounting height.
- Use warm layers and a blanket so the appliance can run for less time.
The bill is higher than expected
- Recalculate with the heater’s input rating, real runtime and current tariff rather than an advertised maximum or a guessed rate.
- Check whether multiple heaters are operating simultaneously or being left on between uses.
- Reduce the heated footprint and operating hours before increasing power.
- For LPG, verify the stated consumption and the price paid per unit of fuel, including delivery charges.
The appliance trips, overheats or becomes unstable
Switch it off and disconnect it if safe. Repeated electrical trips, hot plugs, damaged cables, flame irregularity, gas odor or a leaning mount are stop-use conditions, not adjustment opportunities. Follow the manual and arrange qualified electrical, gas or structural help as appropriate.
A decision checklist for a lower-cost patio
- Can the outing move into sun or the warmest part of the day?
- Can existing walls or a safely anchored screen reduce direct wind?
- Can clothing and blankets provide enough personal warmth?
- If not, which occupied zone needs heat, and what coverage does the appliance specify?
- What are the local electricity or LPG rates, and what does the input or fuel-consumption rating produce for your planned hours?
- Does the proposed location meet every clearance, mounting, cable, cylinder and ventilation requirement?
- Will you switch the appliance off whenever the seating area is empty?
Following that order gives you the best chance of keeping additional energy use small while staying honest about the trade-off: a heater can make an outdoor space more comfortable, but it cannot do so for free.
