How to Find Scaffold Training, Qualifications and Mentoring for Women in the UK

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme (CISRS), then use its regional directory to contact an approved training centre. CISRS is the UK industry-recognized competence scheme for scaffolders and access professionals. Your starting point may be a labourer role, college course, apprenticeship, pre-employment programme or trainee position, depending on your experience and local provision.

For women-specific support, contact the Women in Scaffolding Association (WiSA). WiSA provides visibility and connection for women in the trade, while a memorandum of understanding announced by the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC) and WiSA on 22 September 2026 sets out intended collaboration on mentoring, networking and professional development. The announcement does not publish a live mentee application process, so ask WiSA or NASC what is currently available.

What qualifications do you need to become a scaffolder?

There is no separate qualification standard for women. You follow the same competence pathway as any other scaffolder, with training and assessment matched to the work you will undertake. CISRS divides training into operative, supervisory and management, inspection, and awareness categories. Courses are delivered only by CISRS-accredited centres that have been audited and approved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The correct first step depends on your experience, intended work and whether an employer is supporting you. Someone with no site experience may begin as a scaffolding labourer or trainee, while an experienced operative may be ready for a higher CISRS stage or a specialist course. Confirm entry conditions with the centre before booking.

The main CISRS progression

Stage or option What it is for
Scaffolding labourer route An entry route for learning site duties and progressing toward operative training.
Trainee scaffolder Part 1 Initial operative training for a person beginning the scaffolding trade.
Trainee scaffolder Part 2 Further operative training after the first trainee stage.
Scaffolder NVQ Level 2 Competence qualification for scaffolding operations, normally supported by workplace evidence and assessment.
Advanced Scaffolder NVQ Level 3 Higher-level operative competence for advanced scaffolding work.
Supervisory and management training Preparation for coordinating work and leading others.
Inspection training Training for people who inspect scaffolds and related access arrangements.
System-specific training Training focused on a particular proprietary or modular scaffolding system where the job requires it.
CPD refreshers Continuing professional development to keep knowledge and competence current.

The sequence is not a universal timetable. A centre can explain which stages you can enter, what evidence is required and whether an employer must provide site experience. Ask how a course connects to a CISRS card or other documented competence outcome before paying a deposit.

How do I find scaffold training?

Use the official CISRS regional centre directory rather than relying on an unverified course advertisement. The directory is arranged by UK region and gives centre contact details and the CISRS courses each centre says it delivers. CISRS asks prospective learners to contact centres directly for further information.

  1. Identify your likely starting level. Write down any construction experience, current cards, previous scaffolding work, qualifications, driving access and the type of work you want. If you are new to sites, include whether you are looking for a labourer or trainee position.
  2. Open the CISRS regional centre directory. Shortlist centres you can realistically reach. A course that looks suitable on paper may be impractical if travel, shift patterns or accommodation make attendance difficult.
  3. Check the course route. Ask whether the centre currently delivers the specific stage you need: labourer, trainee Part 1 or Part 2, Scaffolder NVQ Level 2, Advanced Scaffolder NVQ Level 3, inspection, supervision, management, system or CPD training.
  4. Ask about the next actual start date. A centre directory shows course capability; it does not guarantee a current date, an open place or a course running in your preferred month.
  5. Confirm entry conditions and assessment. Ask what experience, documentation, practical evidence, medical information or employer involvement is required. Find out where practical assessment takes place and how workplace evidence is gathered.
  6. Request the complete cost and schedule. Ask what tuition, assessment, registration, travel, accommodation, protective clothing and reassessment charges are included. Prices and availability vary by centre and time, so do not treat a general advert as a current quote.
  7. Ask about work links. Some routes depend on an employer providing supervised site experience. Ask whether the centre works with contractors, advertises trainee vacancies or can explain how to secure the evidence needed for the next stage.
  8. Get the answer in writing. Keep the course name, level, dates, entry requirements, assessment arrangements, cancellation terms and expected card or qualification outcome.

Questions to send a training centre

  • Which CISRS stage is appropriate for someone with my experience?
  • Is the course for tube-and-fitting scaffolding, a specific system, or both?
  • What is the next confirmed start date and how many places remain?
  • Do I need an employer or a current site placement before enrolment?
  • What practical and written assessments are included?
  • What workplace evidence must I collect for an NVQ?
  • What does the quoted fee include, and what costs are extra?
  • What happens if I need a reassessment or cannot attend one day?
  • Which CISRS card or documented outcome should I expect after successful completion?

Choose the entry route that fits your circumstances

The National Careers Service identifies four broad ways into scaffolding. They lead toward the same need for competence, but the balance between classroom learning, paid work and employer support differs.

Route Best fit What to check
College study Someone who wants structured learning before or alongside site work. Whether a relevant course is offered locally, how it connects to CISRS training and how practical experience is arranged.
Apprenticeship Someone seeking paid employment with planned off-the-job learning and assessment. Current vacancies, employer requirements, training provider, funding terms and the qualification or standard attached to the apprenticeship.
Join a company as a trainee scaffolder Someone who can obtain an employer-supported entry position. Who pays for training, how supervision works, the route to CISRS stages and whether the job provides enough varied evidence.
Join as a scaffolding labourer Someone new to the trade who wants to learn site routines before operative training. Whether the role has a defined progression plan rather than indefinite labouring, and when the employer expects formal training to begin.
Pre-employment training scheme Someone preparing for a first construction role or changing career. What the scheme actually provides, whether it includes a recognised outcome, and how it connects you to employers or an accredited centre.

Local provision changes. A route described nationally may not have a place near you this month, and an apprenticeship vacancy can close before you apply. Search current vacancies while contacting centres and employers rather than waiting for one route to appear.

Apprenticeship standards and current terms

Skills England lists the scaffolding apprenticeship standard as version 1.2, updated in 2023. That version date is useful when checking documents, but apprenticeship funding, employer participation and available places can change. Confirm the current terms with the training provider and employer before accepting an offer.

What HSE competence rules mean in practice

The Health and Safety Executive says workers must be competent for the scaffolding work they undertake and must receive training appropriate to the type and complexity of that work. A trainee must work under a trained and competent scaffolder. Supervision should reflect both the complexity of the task and the operatives’ competence.

That has several practical consequences:

  • A short introductory course cannot, by itself, make you competent for every scaffolding task.
  • You should not be left to carry out unfamiliar or complex work without suitable supervision.
  • Mentoring is valuable for encouragement, workplace learning and confidence, but it does not replace required training, assessment, qualification or competent supervision.
  • When moving from tube-and-fitting work to a system scaffold, inspection, design or supervisory duties, check what additional training and evidence are required.

Ask an employer who will supervise you on site, how competence is checked and what happens when a task exceeds your current training. A clear answer is a better sign than a promise that you will “pick it up” without a defined route.

How women-specific support can help

Women in Scaffolding Association

WiSA says it exists to change perceptions of women in scaffolding, showcase women already working on the tools, help women understand the career and its entry route, and work with contractors, training providers, industry organisations and suppliers.

Its homepage currently says that 19 women are known to be working on the tools in UK scaffolding. WiSA’s homepage was viewed on 13 October 2026. “Known to be” is important: this is WiSA’s own count, not an official census or an estimate of every woman in the industry.

WiSA founder Emerantia Claassen describes the purpose this way: “Our aim is simple: show more women that scaffolding is a credible career and support a working culture built on professionalism, competence, respect and shared standards.” The statement points to both visibility and standards: encouragement should sit alongside proper training and safe practice.

What the NASC–WiSA announcement does and does not establish

On 22 September 2026, NASC announced that it and WiSA had signed a memorandum of understanding. The organisations said they would collaborate on recruitment, retention and career progression initiatives, including mentoring, networking and professional development.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The announcement establishes an intended partnership, not a published participant application route. It does not say whether a formal mentoring scheme is open now, how a prospective or early-career scaffolder should apply, or what eligibility criteria would apply. Contact WiSA or NASC directly and ask:

  • Is there currently a mentoring programme for women considering scaffolding or already in training?
  • Are places available to prospective entrants, trainees, qualified operatives, supervisors or all of these groups?
  • Is there an application form, waiting list, event or introductory call?
  • How are mentors matched, and how often do they communicate?
  • Is participation free, and are travel or event costs involved?
  • Can the organisation point you toward an accredited training centre or employer as well?

Build a practical plan from first enquiry to qualification

1. Define the work you want to do

Decide whether your immediate goal is to work on the tools, gain a first site role, inspect scaffolds, supervise teams or progress toward management. You do not need to choose your entire career at the start, but your goal affects the first course and the employer you seek.

2. Map your starting evidence

List site experience, previous training, cards, qualifications and any work at height or access-related duties. Be accurate. A centre can place you more safely when it knows what you have and have not done.

3. Contact several regional centres

Use the CISRS directory to compare nearby providers. Ask identical questions about route, specialism, dates, assessment, workplace evidence, total cost and progression. Comparing the answers is more useful than choosing solely by the first advertised price.

4. Secure supervised experience

5. Add women-focused connection

Contact WiSA with a concise introduction: your location, experience, target CISRS stage and the type of support you need. Ask about current networking, mentoring or introductions, while continuing the formal training and job search.

6. Keep a progression record

Save enrolment documents, assessment results, employer evidence, feedback and dates for refresher training. This record helps you explain your experience when applying for the next CISRS stage or a new role.

Specialisms and progression after initial training

CISRS progression can extend beyond basic operative work. With experience and further training, the National Careers Service identifies possible directions including advanced scaffolding, design, site safety inspection, coordination, construction management and running a business.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Specialist choices should follow the work available in your area and the competence you can demonstrate. Tube-and-fitting and system scaffolding may involve different equipment, methods and training. Inspection, supervision and management add responsibilities that require their own preparation; they are not automatic consequences of time served.

  • Whether refresher or CPD training is needed to keep your knowledge current.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing an unapproved course

A course can sound relevant without being a CISRS-accredited route. Check the provider in the official directory and ask exactly what recognition or card outcome follows completion.

Assuming a directory listing means immediate availability

A centre may deliver a course without having a place on the next intake. Confirm dates, capacity and the current fee directly.

Treating labouring as a qualification plan

Labouring can be a valid entry route, but ask for a progression conversation and a target date for formal training. Without that, you may gain site familiarity without moving toward operative competence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing mentoring with certification

A mentor can explain the trade, help you prepare for workplace situations and provide encouragement. Only the appropriate training, assessment, qualification and competent supervision establish competence for the work.

Assuming women need a different standard

WiSA’s position is that women should train and qualify through the recognised industry pathway. Seek support that improves access and belonging without accepting lower standards or unclear assessment.

Relying on old apprenticeship information

The Skills England standard identified here is version 1.2 with a 2023 update. Verify current funding, vacancy and employer terms before relying on an older listing or discussion.

A decision checklist before you enrol or accept a job

  • I know which CISRS stage or entry route I am asking about.
  • The provider is listed as a CISRS-accredited centre.
  • I have a confirmed date, place, entry requirement and written price.
  • I understand whether an employer or workplace evidence is required.
  • I know whether the work is tube-and-fitting, system scaffolding or another specialism.
  • I know who will supervise me and how supervision will match the task.
  • I have asked WiSA or NASC about current mentoring or networking access rather than assuming a scheme is open.
  • I understand what qualification, card or documented competence outcome follows successful completion.

The most reliable route is therefore practical and specific: identify the CISRS stage, contact approved regional centres, compare the real conditions of each route, secure supervised workplace experience where needed, and use WiSA or the NASC–WiSA connection for women-focused support. Keep the formal competence pathway and mentoring pathway distinct, because both matter but they do different jobs.
