The most reliable way to grow sweet potato slips is to start a healthy, untreated sweet potato root in a shallow bed of moist, well-drained medium and keep it warm—roughly 70–85°F—six to eight weeks before outdoor planting. When shoots are about 6–10 inches long and have several healthy leaves, remove them carefully, root them if necessary, harden them off, and plant them only after frost danger has passed and the soil is warm.
Sweet potato slips are shoots produced by a mature storage root. Sweet potatoes are normally propagated from slips rather than ordinary seed, so the quality of the mother root matters: diseases, nematodes, and other problems can be carried into the next crop.

Before you begin: choose the right planting material
For the best chance of a productive food crop, start with a mature, firm sweet potato that has no soft spots, deep wounds, mold, rot, or suspicious discoloration. A root from a reputable nursery, specialty grower, or certified source is safer than an unknown grocery-store root.
Grocery-store sweet potatoes sometimes sprout successfully, but they may have been treated with sprout inhibitors. They also are not guaranteed to be disease-free or suited to your local growing season. If you use one, treat it as an experiment rather than a dependable source of planting stock.

Buy an edible variety if you intend to harvest roots. Ornamental sweet potato vines are selected primarily for foliage and should not be assumed to produce useful edible storage roots.
Soil propagation versus the water-in-a-jar method
There are two common ways to produce slips:
| Method | Best for | Advantages | Risks or limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shallow soil or sand bed | A serious crop or multiple slips | Better moisture control, good drainage, and lower continuous-submersion risk | Roots and shoots are less visible; the medium must be kept evenly moist |
| Water in a jar | A demonstration or a few slips | Simple and easy to observe | The submerged root can rot; stagnant water must be changed regularly |
For dependable propagation, use the shallow soil-based method. The jar method is useful, but keeping part of the mother root continuously submerged creates a higher risk of rot. If you use water, keep the foliage above the waterline and change the water regularly.

- Six to eight weeks before outdoor planting: Start the mother root in a warm, moist propagation bed.
- After shoots emerge: Move the container into strong light and improve spacing and airflow.
- At roughly 6–10 inches: Separate healthy shoots from the root.
- Before planting outdoors: Root detached slips if needed, then harden them off for about one to two weeks.
- After frost danger has passed: Plant into warm soil, water thoroughly, and protect young slips from wind or cold if necessary.
Under good conditions, slips commonly become usable in about six weeks. The actual schedule depends on variety, root condition, temperature, light, and humidity. Water-grown demonstrations may take roughly a month to produce shoots around 8–10 inches long, but this is not a promise for every root.
How to grow slips in a shallow propagation bed
1. Prepare the container
Use a shallow tray, propagation box, or other clean container with drainage holes. Add 2–3 inches of moist potting mix, clean sand, or another light, well-drained medium. Do not use a heavy, compacted soil that stays saturated.
A seed-starting propagation tray is convenient when you are starting several roots or want better control of drainage and spacing, but any clean, shallow container that drains freely can work.
2. Position the root
Lay the sweet potato horizontally and bury it about halfway. The upper portion should remain exposed. Avoid packing the medium tightly around the root; airless, saturated conditions encourage decay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Provide steady warmth
Keep the root and medium approximately 70–85°F. A target near 70–80°F is suitable for many home setups, while clean commercial slip beds may run around 80–85°F. The practical goal is consistently warm conditions without overheating or drying the root.
If your indoor space is cool, an optional seed-starting heat mat can warm the propagation medium. Use thermostat control when possible, or monitor the temperature closely. A heat mat is not mandatory, and it should never be used as a substitute for checking moisture and temperature.
Use a soil or compost thermometer if you are unsure whether the root or outdoor bed is actually warm enough. Measuring is more reliable than judging temperature from the air alone.
4. Control moisture
Moisten the medium before placing the root in it, then keep it evenly moist—not wet or waterlogged. Containers must drain freely. Excess water is the most common practical cause of a soft, foul-smelling mother root.

5. Give emerging shoots strong light
Place the container in a bright location. If natural light is weak, use supplemental lighting to prevent long, pale, weak shoots. General indoor seedling practice commonly uses 12–16 hours of light per day; treat that as a useful starting practice rather than a sweet-potato-specific requirement.
Warmth without adequate light often produces stretched growth. Once shoots appear, light and ventilation become increasingly important.
6. Improve airflow
Separate crowded shoots when practical and avoid trapping humid air around the foliage. Good airflow helps reduce disease pressure and keeps the leaves from remaining wet for long periods.
When and how to remove the slips
Remove shoots when they are about 6–10 inches long and have several healthy leaves. A transplant-ready slip may have four or five leaves and a healthy root system, although a rootless slip can also establish when planted into warm, moist soil.

Use clean hands and clean snips or a knife. Separate the shoot with a clean twist or cut, taking care not to tear or crush the stem. Discard any shoot or section of mother root that is soft, foul-smelling, severely discolored, or visibly diseased.
For commercial-style beds, disease-management guidance favors cutting slips above the soil line rather than pulling up shoots with soil and attached roots. This reduces the chance of moving soilborne pathogens and nematodes. In a clean home setup, the key priorities are clean tools, a healthy root, clean medium, and avoiding damaged tissue.
Rooting detached slips
There are two practical options:
Water rooting
- Place only the lower portion of the slip in a clean container of water.
- Keep all leaves above the water.
- Change the water regularly rather than allowing it to become stagnant.
- Transplant once roots are visible and the outdoor bed is ready.
Water rooting makes development easy to see, but a slip should not be left indefinitely in stagnant water. Prolonged water culture is not the goal; it is simply a convenient way to encourage roots before planting.
Potting-mix rooting
Insert the lower stem into moist, sterile or clean potting mix. Keep the mix lightly and evenly moist, provide strong light, and avoid saturation. This method avoids moving a water-grown slip into soil later and can be useful when outdoor planting is still several days away.

Rooted slips generally reduce establishment risk, but rootless slips can be planted directly if soil and weather are warm enough. Bury the lower stem while keeping the leaves above the soil.

Harden slips before transplanting
Indoor-grown slips need gradual acclimation. Over approximately one to two weeks:
- Begin outdoors in a sheltered, shaded or filtered-light location for a short period.
- Increase outdoor time a little each day if the slips remain upright and healthy.
- Gradually introduce brighter sunlight.
- Protect the plants from strong wind, cold nights, and sudden temperature changes.
- Move them back indoors or under cover if conditions become unsuitable.
Putting tender slips directly into full sun and wind can cause wilting or leaf scorch even when the roots are healthy.
When to plant sweet potato slips outdoors
Plant after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Sweet potatoes are warm-season plants and may be damaged by temperatures below about 50°F. Use your local last-frost date as a starting point, but check actual soil conditions rather than relying on a calendar date alone.

- Raised beds or ridges that warm and drain quickly.
- black plastic mulch for earlier warming and weed suppression.
- Clear plastic where soil heat is the main limitation, managed carefully to prevent excessive heat or plant contact.
- Floating row cover for temporary protection from cool conditions or a light frost.
- Dark containers or black grow bags placed in a warm, sheltered location.
- A south-facing or otherwise protected microclimate.
These measures extend the useful growing season, but they do not make sweet potatoes frost-hardy.
Prepare the planting site
Choose full sun and loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Loosen the soil at least 6 inches deep so storage roots can enlarge without encountering compacted layers. Raised beds approximately 8–10 inches high provide additional drainage and room for root development.
Use a soil test before applying fertilizer or large amounts of amendments. Incorporate recommended amendments into the upper 6 inches rather than automatically adding fertilizer.
Avoid high-nitrogen feeding. Too much nitrogen can produce impressive vines and leaves while reducing storage-root development. Large foliage is not proof that the crop will yield well.

If your bed needs a fertility check, a garden soil test can help determine whether amendments are needed before planting instead of relying on guesswork.
Planting technique and spacing
- Make a hole or trench deep enough to cover the rooted portion or lower stem.
- Set the slip so the leaves remain above the soil.
- Firm soil gently around the buried stem.
- Water immediately after planting.
- Space plants about 12–18 inches apart, depending on variety and available space.
- Leave approximately 36–48 inches between rows where possible.
Sweet potato vines can spread substantially. Crowding may reduce airflow and make harvesting more difficult, while excessive spacing uses more ground without necessarily improving yield.
Watering after transplanting
Keep the root zone consistently moist during the first week or two while slips establish. Check the soil rather than watering automatically: it should not be left bone-dry, but it should also not remain saturated.
Once established, sweet potatoes tolerate some drought. Maintain reasonably even moisture during root development, then moderate irrigation as harvest approaches. Heavy late-season watering or large swings in moisture can contribute to cracking.
Mulch and season-long care
Mulch helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Organic mulch can be useful after the soil has warmed. Plastic mulch can warm the soil and improve early growth, but monitor the planting area so the material does not overheat the stems or foliage.
Keep weeds under control while plants are small. Once vines spread, they shade much of the soil, but weeds that compete early can reduce establishment and yield.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Disease and pest prevention
The highest-value prevention step is to begin with healthy, disease-free roots or slips. Sweet potato scurf, black rot, root-knot nematodes, and viral diseases may be introduced or spread through infected planting material, contaminated soil, attached roots, or dirty tools.
- Buy certified or disease-free planting material when possible.
- Clean propagation containers and tools before use.
- Do not plant questionable or visibly diseased slips.
- Rotate planting locations rather than repeatedly growing sweet potatoes in the same contaminated soil.
- Avoid repeatedly planting related host crops where soilborne pests are suspected.
- Remove and dispose of badly diseased material; do not use it to produce more slips.
Do not apply a commercial fungicide or pesticide schedule automatically to a home garden. If treatment becomes necessary, identify the problem first and follow the current product label and local extension guidance for your location and crop.

Harvest and curing
Harvest before the soil freezes. Many gardeners wait until foliage begins to yellow or a light frost damages the leaves, but do not leave roots in freezing soil.
Dig carefully with a Trowel or spading fork. Sweet potato skins bruise and cut easily, and wounds accelerate decay during storage.
After digging, cure the roots in a warm, humid, ventilated environment so minor injuries can heal and eating quality can improve as some starches convert to sugars. Recommendations vary by variety and setting: some extension guidance describes roughly one to two weeks around 80°F, while other guidance recommends a shorter, warmer, humid curing period. The exact household setup is not universal, so prioritize warmth, humidity, ventilation, and protection from direct sun or freezing temperatures.
Pro-level equipment checklist
You do not need specialized equipment to grow slips. The essentials are healthy planting material, warmth, moisture control, light, and frost-free timing. These tools can make the process easier:
- Disease-free sweet potato root or purchased edible slips.
- Shallow propagation tray or clean container.
- lightweight potting mix or clean sand.
- Thermostat-controlled seed-starting heat mat when indoor temperatures are too cool.
- Soil or compost thermometer.
- Clean water container for optional slip rooting.
- Supplemental grow light if natural light is weak.
- Clean snips or knife.
- Row cover, black or clear plastic mulch, or grow bag for cool climates.
- Trowel or spading fork for planting and harvest.
Troubleshooting sweet potato slips
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Mother root becomes soft or foul-smelling | Excess water, poor drainage, or decay | Improve drainage, reduce saturation, discard rotting material, and restart with a clean root. |
| Shoots are long and pale | Insufficient light | Move them into stronger light or add supplemental lighting. Avoid adding more heat without adequate light. |
| No sprouting | Root was chilled, treated with an inhibitor, damaged, or kept too cool | Try a mature untreated root and maintain consistently warm conditions. |
| Large vines but few storage roots | Excess nitrogen, insufficient warmth, or too short a season | Use soil-test-based fertility, improve soil warmth, and choose a variety suited to the local season. |
| Slips wilt after transplanting | Inadequate hardening, cold soil, wind, or insufficient establishment water | Harden gradually, wait for warmer soil, provide temporary protection, and water consistently. |
| Roots crack near harvest | Heavy late irrigation or rainfall | Moderate watering late in the season and harvest before freezing conditions. |
Quick decision guide
- Starting only a few plants? A jar can work, but a shallow soil bed gives better control and less rot risk.
- Starting in a cool house? Measure the medium temperature and consider a monitored heat mat.
- Growing for food rather than decoration? Choose an edible variety and verified planting material.
- Living in a short-season climate? Start six to eight weeks early, warm the soil, use protection, and select an early or locally adapted variety.
- Seeing lots of leaves but few roots? Check nitrogen, warmth, planting date, and season length before adding more fertilizer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I grow sweet potato slips from a grocery-store sweet potato?
Yes, a grocery-store root may sprout, but it may have been treated with a sprout inhibitor and is not guaranteed to be disease-free or productive. For a dependable food crop, use a reputable or certified source.
Do sweet potato slips need roots before planting?
No. Rooted slips are easier to establish, but rootless slips can root directly in warm, moist soil. Plant only after frost danger has passed and the soil is warm.
How long does it take to grow sweet potato slips?
Plan on starting about six to eight weeks before outdoor planting. Under suitable conditions, slips often become usable in roughly six weeks, though variety, temperature, light, and root condition can change the schedule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy are my sweet potato slips pale and stretched?
They are probably not receiving enough light. Move them to stronger light or provide supplemental lighting, while avoiding excessive heat without adequate light.
Can ornamental sweet potato vines be used to grow edible sweet potatoes?
Do not assume so. Ornamental cultivars are selected mainly for foliage, while edible varieties are selected for storage-root production and quality.
The Bottom Line
Start with a healthy edible root, use a shallow well-drained propagation bed, maintain approximately 70–85°F and even moisture, and provide strong light after shoots emerge. Remove healthy 6–10-inch slips carefully, root them if needed, harden them off over one to two weeks, and transplant after frost danger has passed into warm, loose, well-drained soil. The combination of clean planting material, controlled moisture, warm soil, modest fertility, and careful timing is what separates dependable sweet potato production from a few attractive vines.
