The tree provides support—not food—and the orchid does not penetrate it like a parasite. Water needs during establishment depend on rainfall, humidity, exposure, and the orchid itself.
Choose an orchid that suits the site
Not every orchid is suited to life outdoors on a tree. First check whether yours is an epiphytic type and confirm its light and temperature needs from the plant label or a local orchid specialist. Orchid groups differ, and requirements can vary among species and hybrids.
As broad guidance, the American Orchid Society (AOS) suggests vandas for sunny sites and oncidiums, phalaenopsis, and cattleyas for dimmer light. UF/IFAS Extension describes phalaenopsis and oncidiums as shade-preferring, and dendrobiums, vandas, and cattleyas as needing more sun. Treat these as starting points, not universal rules.
Assess the tree and mounting position
Match the orchid’s preferred light to the spot on the trunk or limb. Notice whether it gets morning or afternoon sun and whether the tree loses its leaves, since seasonal changes can alter exposure. AOS lists oaks, citrus, bottlebrush, palms, and schefflera as possible host trees. Rough bark may help roots grip, but AOS notes that it is not essential.

- 🌱 TOTALLY UNIQUE: Handcrafted in the Northeastern villages of Thailand, these style of hanging baskets are beautifully designed for both form and function. The dark natural wood color is created from soaking the reeds and allowing them to dry. This time honored process is essential as it naturally finishes the baskets appearance.
- 🌱 SKILLFULLY CRAFTED: Thai orchids are world renown and this “Siam style” basket has been used for ages as the best way to nurture draping floras. As these baskets are dried a faint hint of the charred scent is innate to the fabricated cane sedge.
- 🌱 HAND WOVEN: Individually handcrafted and designed to endure daily use, these multi-functional plant hangers adorn the garden walls and entrance ways to many Thai Temple gardens and are functionally designed to allow water to drain even if drenched in a monsoon rain. The metal hanger will fade to an oxidized patina over time that will also match the color of the dark reeds.
- 🌱 BASKET SIZE: Container radius at widest point is 4 inches and the length is approximately 14 inches top to bottom (reeds vary slightly, as they are not mass produced) not including the metal hanging hook, which can be adjusted. These are ideal for smaller plants, orchids, vines, floras, cuttings that can be directed rooted in the soil or with a 3 inch diameter plant pot
- 🌱 EASY CARE, SIMPLE TO CLEAN: Rinse with water and these beautiful decor baskets are quick to air dry in the sunlight. Please note that; as these handmade hanging baskets are individually constructed, there may be slight variations in color shade and/or may contain common blemishes that occur naturally during each rendition of the drying process.
Consider access to water as well as light: a sheltered or dry position may need more supplemental watering than one exposed to regular rain and humidity. A tree is a suitable anchor only if the orchid can tolerate the local climate, including winter cold. AOS describes outdoor tree growing in tropical and subtropical regions and some mild coastal areas; plants in colder areas may need winter protection.
Mount the orchid when roots can establish
Whenever possible, attach the orchid as root activity begins, often near its usual repotting time. Timing varies by species: some orchids produce roots at different points in the year, and many can root through much of the year. A warm period may help establishment, but use the plant’s own growth pattern as your guide. AOS discusses differing root-emergence timing in Cattleya skinneri and Cattleya bowringiana.

- Classic and attractive square shape
- Provides excellent drainage
- Handcrafted, natural wood basket
- Brand: Sun Bulb
- Remove the pot and growing medium. Gently free the roots so they can be positioned against the tree.
- Place the orchid at its root base. Hold it near the point where roots emerge and spread the roots against the bark. Keep new root tips touching the bark.
- Secure the plant so it cannot shift. Use a flexible tie, such as cotton string or a soft synthetic plant tie, to hold the orchid steady without constricting it.
- Check the tie as the plant grows. Loosen synthetic ties if they begin to restrict growth, then remove them once the roots hold the orchid in place. Cotton string can also be used as an attachment material.
For direct tree mounting, place the orchid against the bark rather than adding a pad of moss or other moisture-retaining material beneath it. AOS cautions that such a pad can keep the surface too wet and encourage rot. Mounted orchids in other settings may have different moisture needs.
Water and monitor the orchid while it establishes
Pay particular attention to moisture during the first months, while roots are attaching. AOS suggests misting with a hose or directing a sprinkler line into the tree; UF/IFAS advises supplementing moisture during dry spells according to the orchid and observed conditions. There is no reliable single watering interval for all species, trees, and climates. Use rainfall, humidity, exposure, and the plant’s condition to guide watering rather than following a fixed calendar.

- Can be displayed indoors or outdoors, hanging or standing on a surface. A set of these baskets filled with your favorite ochids looks really good hanging under a terrace or standing on a table
- Suitable for many types of orchids. To secure small orchids in these baskets first insert the mesh in the bottom of the basket. Then add a well-draining potting mix like bark chips or coconut husk. For orchids with large roots insert the roots through the gaps between the wooden slats
Once established, the orchid may still need periodic water and fertilizer. The amount and frequency depend on the orchid and its growing conditions.

When pruning the host tree, avoid cutting or knocking the orchid and its roots. If your local winter conditions exceed the orchid’s cold tolerance, arrange protection or choose a different growing location; the species or hybrid name and local climate determine what is suitable.
