To grow lavender from seed, sow in spring in small pots or a tray of peat-free seed compost, follow the seed packet’s directions for any cold treatment, and keep the compost lightly moist while you wait. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) gives genus-level guidance of cold, moist stratification, light covering and a germination temperature of 13–18°C (55–64°F); germination can take up to 90 days. Once seedlings are established, give them full sun and sharply draining soil.

1. Decide whether seed is the right propagation method

Lavender grows from seed, but seedlings raised from a cultivar may not match the parent plant. Seed is a good choice if you want to raise several plants or enjoy variation. If you need a new plant to retain the characteristics of a particular lavender, choose a cutting instead: the RHS says cuttings produce plants identical to the parent.

Seed can also take patience. The RHS lists up to 90 days for germination, so it is not the best route if you need a plant quickly.

2. Check the seed packet and plan the cold treatment

Start with the directions for your particular seed. Cold, moist stratification is the RHS’s general guidance for Lavandula, but treatment and sowing instructions can vary by seed type. For harvested lavender seed, the RHS recommends four weeks of cold stratification. Its guidance for the named strain ‘Blue Spear’ instead specifies three weeks of prechilling and surface sowing. Do not treat either duration as a universal rule.

3. Prepare pots or a seed tray

  1. Choose small pots or a seed tray with drainage holes.
  2. Fill with peat-free seed compost and moisten it evenly so it is damp, not waterlogged.
  3. If using seed collected from your own plants, gather dry seedheads in late summer, store the seed over winter, and sow in spring, following the applicable cold-treatment guidance.

The RHS recommends small pots or trays and peat-free seed compost for spring sowing. Clean containers with drainage help prevent the compost from staying saturated.

4. Stratify and sow the seeds

Apply the cold treatment specified for your seed. For the general RHS approach, use cold, moist stratification; the RHS harvested-seed guide specifies four weeks, while ‘Blue Spear’ has a three-week prechill. Then sow according to the packet: general RHS guidance is to cover seed lightly, while ‘Blue Spear’ is surface-sown. Press seeds gently into place and avoid burying them deeply.

5. Keep conditions steady and wait

For genus-level guidance, the RHS gives a germination temperature of 13–18°C (55–64°F) and a possible wait of up to 90 days. Utah State University Extension also describes lavender germination as slow. Keep the compost lightly moist rather than wet, and do not assume that a tray has failed simply because nothing appears in the first few weeks.

6. Grow seedlings on in sun and fast-draining soil

After seedlings are established, grow them in a bright, sunny position and transfer them to a site with free-draining soil. Lavender needs full sun; damp, heavy soil raises the risk of root rot. Where garden soil drains poorly, a raised bed or container offers a practical alternative. Avoid keeping young plants persistently wet.

What do you need to start? Lavender seed and time to raise seedlings. A suitable parent plant from which to take a cutting.
How long should you allow? The RHS lists up to 90 days for germination. The cited RHS guidance establishes fidelity to the parent, but does not state a propagation timeframe.
