Shasta daisies (Leucanthemum × superbum) grow best in a sunny, well-drained bed. Deadhead faded flowers, avoid constantly wet soil, and divide clumps when they lose vigor.
For a reliable, long-flowering daisy in a home landscape, grow Shasta daisy (Leucanthemum × superbum) in full sun and freely draining soil. It is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial, commonly suited to USDA Zones 5–9, but it does not tolerate permanently wet ground—especially through winter.

This guide is specifically about Shasta daisies. “Daisy” is a broad common name: English daisies, Gerbera daisies, and oxeye daisies have different needs. Identify a wild or self-seeding daisy before planting it; oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare) is distinct from Shasta daisy and is invasive in some regions.

- Sun: Aim for at least six hours of direct sun daily for the heaviest bloom. In very hot, dry locations, light afternoon shade can be useful.
- Soil: Use soil that retains some moisture but drains readily. Drainage matters more than exceptionally rich soil.
- Winter conditions: Do not plant in a bed that remains soggy after normal rain or over winter. Move the planting to a raised or better-drained area instead.
- Space: Check the label for the named cultivar’s mature width. Shasta daisies can range roughly from 1–4 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide, so spacing based on the nursery pot is often too close.
How to plant Shasta daisies
- Prepare a sunny, well-drained planting area and remove competing weeds.
- For a nursery plant, dig a hole wide enough for the root ball and set the plant at the same soil level it had in its container. Do not bury the crown deeply.
- Backfill, firm the soil lightly, and water thoroughly to settle the roots.
- Leave room around each plant for its mature spread so foliage can dry after rain and the clump remains easy to inspect.
Growing from seed: Shasta daisy seeds are a practical choice for starting a planting. Follow the seed packet’s sowing depth, timing, and temperature directions. Seed-grown plants are appropriate when the goal is to establish Shasta daisies generally; buy a named plant when you want a specific height, flower form, or other cultivar trait. A tall cultivar may benefit from a perennial plant support, but staking is not necessary for every Shasta daisy.

Watering: establish roots, then avoid wet feet
Water new plants as needed while they establish. Once rooted in the ground, water in response to dry weather and the soil rather than following a fixed weekly schedule. Containers dry faster than in-ground beds, and rainfall, heat, soil texture, and wind all change watering needs.
The important limit is overwatering. Constantly wet soil encourages fungal problems and root decline. If the bed stays wet, improve the planting location or drainage rather than adding more water.
Season-long care for more flowers
Deadhead individual blooms as they fade. Removing spent flowers encourages additional bloom and reduces unwanted self-seeding. After the main flush of flowers, cut the spent flower stems back to the basal leaves if the foliage remains healthy. This can help the plant direct energy into its crown and may extend the useful life of a plant that can be somewhat short-lived.

For seasonal cleanup, local climate should guide the exact timing. Some gardeners cut stems down in autumn; others leave the plant until winter cleanup and cut stems to the ground then. Remove diseased-looking debris from the planting area rather than leaving it around the crown.
Do not assume Shasta daisies need a routine fertilizer program. Good sun, drainage, and reasonable soil conditions matter more. If growth is poor, use a soil test and local extension guidance to identify whether nutrients are actually limiting.
Divide clumps to renew them
Shasta daisy clumps can become less vigorous with age. Division every two to three years is a useful starting expectation, though the plant—not the calendar—should make the decision. Divide crowded, declining clumps in early spring or late summer.

- Lift the clump and inspect roots and the crown.
- Keep healthy, vigorous sections with roots attached.
- Discard obviously rotten or diseased material; do not share it.
- Replant divisions promptly at their original depth in prepared, well-drained soil and water them in.
Division is the best way to renew an established named plant. Seed is also a valid propagation method, but seedlings may not preserve every characteristic expected from a selected cultivar.
Diagnose common problems before treating
| What you see | Likely first check | Useful response |
|---|---|---|
| Few flowers | Too little direct sun | Evaluate shade before adding fertilizer; move or open up the site if practical. |
| Decline after winter | Wet, poorly drained soil | Correct drainage or relocate to a raised, drier planting area. |
| Yellowing, wilting, or soft/dark roots | Root rot or another root problem | Stop treating it as ordinary drought stress. Inspect roots, reduce excess moisture, and address drainage. |
| Leaf damage or discoloration | Aphids, leaf miners, mites, or leaf-spot disease | Inspect closely, improve airflow, keep foliage and soil from staying wet, and remove suspect debris. |
| Sudden persistent wilt | Root disease or verticillium wilt | Identify the issue before dividing, sharing, or treating the plant. |
Potential problems include aphids, leaf miners, mites, leaf spots, stem rots, verticillium wilt, and root rot. Excess soil moisture and poor drainage favor Pythium root rot. Start with inspection and cultural corrections rather than preventive pesticide use.
If a pesticide is warranted after identifying the pest, use only a product currently labeled for the exact ornamental plant, pest, and jurisdiction, and follow its label exactly. Registrations and directions vary by place and can change.

Climate limits matter
Zone ratings are a guide, not a promise of identical performance everywhere. In central and south Florida, summer heat commonly causes Shasta daisies to be grown as annuals rather than long-lived perennials. For local planting windows, cultivar choices, and overwintering expectations, consult a nearby extension service or reputable local nursery.

Divide a clump when it becomes crowded or less vigorous. Every two to three years is a common renewal interval; early spring or late summer are suitable times.
Can I sow any wild daisy in my garden?
Oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare) is not the same as Shasta daisy and is invasive in some areas. Identify the plant and check local invasive-plant guidance first.
The Bottom Line
Shasta daisies reward a well-drained, sunny landscape bed with repeat bloom and straightforward care. The most important decision is the site: a plant that has room, sunlight, and dry-draining roots is far easier to maintain than one placed in wet soil.
