Grow a moth orchid (Phalaenopsis) in bright, filtered light and warm, stable conditions. Water when its potting medium needs it, then let excess water drain; roots should not stay soggy. Repot into fresh orchid medium when the old medium breaks down or roots need attention. These basics help keep the plant healthy, though no care routine can guarantee a rebloom.

What light does a moth orchid need?

Choose a bright spot with filtered light. An east- or west-facing windowsill is a useful starting point; protect the leaves from strong direct summer sun, which can scorch them. Keep the plant away from heaters and cold drafts. Artificial lighting can also work for many Phalaenopsis.

The Royal Horticultural Society’s Phalaenopsis growing guide provides further placement and care guidance.

How often should you water a moth orchid?

There is no single watering interval that fits every home. The RHS suggests weekly watering during the growing season as a general guide, but the medium may dry at a different rate depending on the pot, season, temperature, light and indoor conditions. Check the medium and roots, and adjust rather than following a rigid year-round calendar.

Surprise Moth Orchid Plant - Phalaenopsis - 2" Pot - Easy House Plant
  • Proper name: Phalaenopsis
  • Bright indirect light with temperatures above 60 degrees F.
  • Bloom colors will vary, with no customizations and may not be in bloom at time of shipment.
  • 2" pot
  • Garden & Patio
  • Water thoroughly enough to wet the medium.
  • Let all excess water drain away; do not leave the pot standing in runoff.
  • Avoid persistently wet roots, which may rot, and roots kept so dry that they shrivel.
  • As growth slows and light levels fall, the plant may use less water.

The RHS explains the risks of both overly wet and overly dry roots in its Phalaenopsis growing guide and moth orchid overview.

What temperature suits a moth orchid?

Keep the plant warm and avoid drafts and abrupt temperature changes. The RHS gives general guide ranges of 19–30°C (66–86°F) by day and 16–19°C (61–66°F) at night. These are horticultural recommendations, not a guarantee that a plant will flower at a particular temperature.

When should you repot a Phalaenopsis?

Repot when the medium has broken down or the plant’s roots need attention, rather than relying on a fixed calendar. Use an open, orchid-specific medium that drains freely and leaves air around the roots; ordinary houseplant compost is not a substitute. Bark-based orchid mix is one suitable option.

  1. Remove the plant from its pot and inspect the roots.
  2. Remove soft, rotted roots.
  3. Arrange the healthy roots over fresh orchid medium in a pot that drains freely.

The RHS guide to indoor orchids discusses bark-based medium, and the American Orchid Society’s Phalaenopsis culture sheet covers root care during repotting. A draining orchid pot can be useful, but no particular specialized pot style is required.

Should you fertilize a moth orchid?

During active growth, the RHS recommends light, regular feeding with an orchid fertilizer. Follow the directions on the product label rather than guessing a dose. Feeding is secondary to suitable light, watering and healthy roots; fertilizer cannot compensate for problems with those basics. The American Orchid Society’s general orchid care guidance also emphasizes balancing light, air, water, medium and fertilizer.

How do you get a moth orchid to flower again?

Start with steady care: suitable light, warm conditions, watering that avoids persistently wet roots, and healthy growing medium. For a large, healthy plant that has not flowered for some time, the RHS suggests trying a cooler location for roughly a month, lowering the temperature by about 5°C (8°F). This may help some plants, but it does not guarantee a flower spike or set a rebloom timetable.
