Majesty palm (Ravenea rivularis) grows best in bright filtered light, consistently—but not constantly—moist soil, warm temperatures, good humidity, and a container that drains freely. It is a tropical palm that can be demanding indoors: a dark corner, dry air, irregular watering, cold drafts, or waterlogged soil can quickly lead to brown tips, yellow leaves, pests, or root problems.
Give it a bright position near an east-facing window, or several feet from a bright south- or west-facing window behind a sheer curtain. Water thoroughly when the upper layer of potting mix has started to dry, empty excess water, and protect the palm from temperatures in the low 40s°F. With stable conditions and gradual adjustments, an indoor majesty palm can reach approximately 5–10 feet, although growth is slower indoors than outdoors.

Majesty palm is native to Madagascar and naturally occurs in habitats associated with rivers and streams. Outdoors in a suitable tropical climate it can become a large tree, but plants sold for homes are usually container-grown. Indoor specimens are commonly sold as multiple young palms in one pot for a fuller appearance. The species itself is solitary, so a crowded retail pot may contain several separate plants rather than one naturally clumping palm.

Common names are sometimes used inconsistently, and majesty palm is not the same plant as areca, parlor, kentia, or sago palm. If you are ready to buy, compare listings for a correctly identified majesty palm plant rather than assuming every marketplace listing is accurately labeled.
1. Choose the right light
Place the palm in bright filtered or indirect light. An east-facing window is often a convenient choice because it provides bright morning light without the harshest afternoon exposure. Near a south- or west-facing window, use a sheer curtain or position the plant far enough from the glass that intense midday rays do not strike the leaves directly.

“Indirect light” does not mean a dark hallway or distant corner. Majesty palm needs more light than forgiving palms such as parlor palm or kentia palm. Inadequate light can produce weak growth, yellowing, poor water use, and greater pest pressure. If the palm is several feet from a window or the room is shaded for much of the day, supplemental fluorescent or LED plant lighting can help. An indoor plant grow light is an option when the available window light is insufficient, but it should supplement—not replace—appropriate watering and humidity.
Rotate the container slightly every week or two so growth is not pulled permanently toward the window. Do not make a sudden move from shade to full sun. Leaves adapted to indoor filtered light can scorch when exposed abruptly to intense sunlight.
Moving a majesty palm outdoors
During warm weather, the palm can spend time on a shaded or sheltered patio or balcony. Wait until nighttime temperatures are reliably above approximately 50°F, then acclimate it gradually:
- Start in bright shade protected from wind for a few days.
- Increase exposure gradually over one to two weeks, avoiding abrupt full sun.
- Monitor the pot closely because wind, heat, and outdoor light can increase water loss.
- Bring it indoors before cold nights, frost, or a sharp temperature drop.
The 50°F transition point is a practical general guideline, not a guarantee. A recently purchased, drought-stressed, or otherwise weakened plant may need a more gradual transition. Avoid placing the container where heavy rain can leave the mix saturated.
2. Keep the soil evenly moist, not wet
Water when the upper portion of the potting mix has begun to dry, then soak the root ball thoroughly until water runs from the drainage hole. Let the excess drain completely and empty the saucer or decorative cachepot. The roots should never sit in standing water.
Do not water by a fixed weekly schedule. A palm in bright light and a warm room may need water more often than one in winter low light. Pot size, soil composition, humidity, temperature, and root density all change how quickly the mix dries. Test the mix with a finger, or use a digital soil moisture meter if judging moisture is difficult. The important point is to check the root zone rather than watering automatically.

Signs of too little water
- Brown or crispy tips and margins
- Curling, drooping, or dry-looking fronds
- Leaf shedding after repeated severe drying
- A pot that feels unusually light and mix that has pulled away from the sides
Rehydrate a very dry plant gradually and thoroughly. Water once, allow it to drain, and check the mix again rather than leaving the container submerged. If the mix has become hydrophobic and water runs straight down the sides, several slow applications may be needed to wet the root ball evenly.
Signs of too much water
- Mix that stays heavy and wet for many days
- Progressive yellowing despite frequent watering
- Wilting while the soil is still wet
- A sour smell, poor drainage, or soft deteriorating roots
Overwatering is usually a problem of watering frequency, poor drainage, or an oversized container, rather than simply the amount poured on one occasion. Stop watering until the mix has begun to dry, confirm that the drainage hole is open, and remove standing water immediately.
3. Provide humidity without sacrificing airflow
Majesty palm prefers higher humidity than many homes provide, particularly in winter heating or during constant air-conditioning. Dry air can cause brown tips and may encourage spider mites.

The most dependable solution is raising humidity for the room with a cool-mist room humidifier. Grouping plants together can also create a slightly more humid local environment. A pebble or expanded-clay tray may help when the container sits above water, but the pot must remain above the waterline; its drainage hole should never be submerged.
Recommended Free Tools
Misting leaves may wet the foliage temporarily, but it does not reliably maintain room humidity. Constantly wet leaves in stagnant air are not a substitute for proper ventilation. Keep some gentle air movement around the plant and avoid placing it in a sealed, humid enclosure.
4. Use a draining container and suitable mix
Use a moisture-retentive but well-drained indoor potting mix. A general indoor medium can work if it does not remain saturated; adding a coarse drainage component such as sand may be appropriate when repotting, depending on the existing mix. The target is a root zone that holds moisture while allowing air to reach the roots.
Most importantly, choose a container with an open drainage hole. If the current pot has no drainage or water collects inside a decorative cover, move the palm to a pot with drainage hole and keep the decorative container as an outer cachepot only if excess water can be emptied easily.
A dramatically oversized pot is risky. Its larger volume of damp mix may dry too slowly, increasing the likelihood of root rot. Majesty palm can tolerate being somewhat root-bound, so do not repot merely because a calendar says it is time.
5. Repot carefully
Repot in spring or during active growth when possible. Repot only when roots have filled the container, drainage has deteriorated, the mix has broken down, or the plant is repeatedly drying out because the root ball has become extremely crowded.
- Select a container only modestly larger than the current one.
- Prepare a well-drained indoor medium before removing the palm.
- Slide out the root ball and disturb the roots as little as practical.
- Set the palm at the same depth; do not bury the trunk or compress the mix excessively.
- Water thoroughly, let the container drain, and empty the saucer.
- Keep the plant in stable light and temperature while it recovers.
Palms can be sensitive to root disturbance. A roughly two- to three-year interval is sometimes used to refresh the potting mix, but a larger established plant may need repotting less often. Condition of the roots and mix matters more than the date.
Do not apply routine fertilizer immediately after repotting. Allow the plant to settle, and wait approximately six to eight weeks before feeding a newly potted palm unless the potting product label specifically provides different instructions.
6. Fertilize modestly during active growth
Feed during active growth, generally spring through summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Use a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to its label. For a actively growing houseplant, a half-strength balanced feed every two to four weeks can be reasonable, but majesty palm often needs fewer applications than enthusiastic feeding schedules suggest.

Never heavily fertilize a dormant, recently repotted, drought-stressed, or severely pest-damaged plant. Excess fertilizer can build salts in the mix and cause brown or burned leaf tips. If fertilizer injury is suspected, stop feeding and flush the container thoroughly with clean water if drainage is good. Do not use repeated flushing on a container that cannot drain freely.

7. Prune and clean the fronds correctly
Remove a completely dead brown frond at its base with clean, sharp pruners. Do not remove a mostly green frond just because a few tips are brown: the living tissue is still contributing energy to the plant.
For appearance, trim only the brown tissue, following the natural shape of the leaf and leaving a narrow brown edge rather than cutting into green tissue. This improves appearance but does not cure the cause of browning. Check humidity, watering, fertilizer, roots, light, and temperature before pruning repeatedly.
Wipe dust from the upper and lower leaf surfaces with a damp cloth. Support the frond while cleaning and avoid sharply bending the long leaf stems. Do not use leaf-shine products; they can damage palm foliage and make pest inspection more difficult.

Common majesty-palm pests include spider mites, mealybugs, scale, aphids, and whiteflies. Inspect weekly or twice weekly, particularly on leaf undersides, along midribs, around leaf bases, and where fronds meet the stems.
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Fine stippling, bronzing, or delicate webbing | Spider mites, especially in warm, dry air |
| White cottony material | Mealybugs around leaf bases and joints |
| Small fixed bumps or sticky honeydew | Scale |
| Small flying insects or clusters on tender growth | Whiteflies or aphids |
At the first sign of infestation, isolate the palm from other plants. Wash the foliage with a gentle stream of water and physically remove visible insects. For a continuing infestation, insecticidal soap or horticultural oil may be suitable only if the label permits use on palms and indoor plants. Test a small area first, follow the label exactly, provide ventilation, and do not treat a drought-stressed or heat-stressed plant. Repeated applications may be necessary because some pests or eggs survive a single treatment.
Improving humidity can make conditions less favorable for spider mites, but humidity alone will not eliminate an established infestation.
Diagnosing brown tips, yellow leaves, and other problems
Brown tips or margins
Brown tips commonly result from low humidity, inconsistent watering, root damage, excessive fertilizer, cold drafts, or inadequate light. Inspect the plant before changing several conditions at once:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Feel the mix at several points below the surface.
- Check whether water drains freely and whether the saucer is emptied.
- Review recent fertilizer applications.
- Look for drafts from doors, windows, air-conditioning outlets, radiators, fireplaces, and furnace vents.
- Inspect for spider mites and other pests.
Once damaged, brown tissue will not turn green again. New growth is the best indicator that the correction is working.
Yellow leaves
One older lower frond gradually yellowing may be normal aging. Widespread or rapidly increasing yellowing is more concerning and can reflect low light, underwatering, overwatering, root stress, low humidity, or nutrient imbalance. Do not automatically add more water or fertilizer. First determine whether the mix is dry, saturated, or poorly drained.

Reddish-brown patches after cold exposure
Cold injury can cause reddish-brown dead areas after exposure to temperatures around the mid-40s°F or lower. Keep the palm away from cold glass, exterior doors, and drafts. Tropical palms should be protected from temperatures below approximately 40–45°F; move the plant indoors before frost is possible.
Wilting in wet soil
Wilting while the mix remains wet can indicate root-zone stress rather than thirst. Confirm drainage and inspect the roots if the problem continues. Healthy roots are generally firm; damaged roots may be dark, soft, or foul-smelling. Remove severely damaged portions with clean tools and repot into fresh, well-drained mix only when necessary, because additional root disturbance also stresses the palm.
Can majesty palm be propagated?
Yes, but propagation is not a quick method of producing a large plant. Seed propagation is possible, while division is the practical method when a retail pot contains several genuinely separate young palms.
Before dividing, confirm that the container holds multiple individual plants with separate stems and separable root systems. Do not cut a single palm trunk in half or aggressively sever roots to manufacture divisions. Division is stressful, so undertake it only when the plants can be separated with reasonable root systems intact. Pot each division into a suitably sized draining container, water thoroughly, and provide stable warmth, humidity, and filtered light while it recovers.
Outdoor growing and hardiness
In most of the United States, treat majesty palm as a tropical container plant. North Carolina Extension lists it for USDA Hardiness Zones 10a–11b. In those warm zones it may be grown outdoors in a sheltered location, but even there it benefits from protection from wind, sudden cold, and abrupt exposure to intense sun.
In colder regions, grow it outdoors only during the warm season and bring it inside before cold injury is likely. Inspect for insects before moving it indoors, and acclimate it back to indoor light gradually where possible. Outdoor containers dry faster and can also become waterlogged during prolonged rain, so check the mix rather than relying on indoor watering habits.

Majesty palm is native to Madagascar and has conservation concerns associated with habitat decline, declining mature palms, and seed collection. Conservation categories can change, so an older assessment should not automatically be presented as the current Red List status. Buy from a reputable nursery or supplier able to identify the plant and provide cultivated stock. Do not assume an ordinary retail specimen is wild-collected unless that is documented.
A practical majesty-palm care schedule
- Weekly or twice weekly: Check the upper mix for moisture, inspect leaf undersides and leaf bases, and rotate the container slightly.
- When the mix begins to dry: Water thoroughly, allow complete drainage, and empty the saucer or cachepot.
- During spring and summer growth: Feed modestly according to the fertilizer label, avoiding repeated heavy applications.
- Monthly: Wipe dust from the foliage, check for scale and webbing, and confirm that drainage remains clear.
- Spring: Repot only if the roots are crowded or the mix has degraded; introduce outdoor exposure gradually after nights are warm.
- Before autumn cold: Inspect for pests and bring the plant indoors before cold injury is likely.
Before you buy or repot: a simple supply checklist
The essentials are not exotic: a correctly identified majesty palm, bright filtered light, a draining container, suitable indoor mix, and a way to maintain adequate humidity. A well-draining potting mix and a container with a drainage hole are more useful than an oversized decorative planter. In a dry room, a humidifier is generally more reliable than occasional misting. A moisture meter is optional; finger-testing the mix is free and works when done consistently.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I water a majesty palm?
There is no reliable universal weekly schedule. Check the upper portion of the potting mix and water thoroughly when it has begun to dry. Let excess water drain and empty the saucer. Bright, warm conditions may require more frequent watering than a cool, dim winter room.
Can majesty palm tolerate low light?
Not well. It may survive temporarily, but low light can cause weak growth, yellowing, poor water use, and more pest pressure. Give it bright filtered light or use supplemental plant lighting.
Why are the tips of my majesty palm turning brown?
Low humidity, inconsistent watering, excessive fertilizer, root damage, cold drafts, inadequate light, and pests can all contribute. Check the root-zone moisture, drainage, fertilizer history, location, and leaf undersides before changing several conditions at once.
Should I mist my majesty palm?
Misting can temporarily wet the leaves but is not a dependable way to raise room humidity. A humidifier, plant grouping, and suitable airflow provide more consistent conditions. Avoid stagnant air and constantly wet foliage.
Can a majesty palm grow outdoors?
Yes, seasonally in many regions and year-round only in suitably warm climates. It is generally listed for USDA Zones 10a–11b. Acclimate it gradually to outdoor light, protect it from wind and cold, and bring it indoors before frost or cold nights.
Is majesty palm safe for cats and dogs?
The ASPCA lists Ravenea rivularis as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. Eating plant material can still cause gastrointestinal upset, and accurate identification matters.
Can I divide a majesty palm?
Only if the pot contains multiple separate palms with separable root systems. Do not split a single trunk or cut roots aggressively. Division is stressful and should be done conservatively.
The Bottom Line
Majesty palm is not a low-light, drought-tolerant houseplant. Give Ravenea rivularis bright filtered light, warm stable conditions, higher humidity, lightly moist but well-drained soil, and careful protection from cold and standing water. Diagnose brown or yellow foliage by checking the whole growing environment—not by automatically watering more.
