Choose a juniper for its mature size and shape, plant it in sun and well-drained soil, and water it regularly while it establishes. Once established, most junipers need little extra irrigation. The details vary by cultivar and climate, but avoiding persistently wet soil and pruning only into leafy growth are sound starting points.

Choose a juniper that fits the site

Junipers range from low groundcovers to spreading shrubs and upright trees. Their mature height and spread vary substantially, so use the named cultivar’s expected dimensions—not the size of the plant in its nursery pot—to decide where it belongs. UMass Extension groups landscape junipers by groundcover, spreading, and upright forms, which suit different roles in a garden: UMass Extension’s juniper guide.

Before buying, compare each candidate’s mature height and spread, growth habit, suitability for your local climate, and tolerance for your site’s soil and drainage. Consider the purpose, too: a low form for a slope, a spreading plant for groundcover, or an upright cultivar for a specimen or screen. Clemson Extension’s guide, revised February 12, 2026, gives cultivar-dependent size and hardiness information for the Southeast; those recommendations may not transfer directly to other regions: Clemson Extension: Juniper.

Find a sunny, well-drained planting spot

Full sun and well-drained soil are the safest general choices across the cited landscape guidance. Junipers can tolerate a range of soil types and pH, but persistent wetness is a recurring risk. Avoid sites where water regularly stands or where poor drainage keeps the root zone saturated. A profile of Japanese garden juniper likewise specifies full sun and well-drained soil and cautions that it does not tolerate wet soil: NC State Extension: Juniperus procumbens.

#1 Best Overall
Parsoni Juniper (2.5 Quart) Low-Growing Evergreen Shrub with Grayish Blue-Green Foliage - Live Outdoor Full Sun to Part Shade Plant
  • RESILIENT GROUNDCOVER: The Parsoni Juniper is an attractive evergreen ground cover packed with aromatic foliage that features hues of blue and green. On average a fully mature plant will reach 2-3' H x 5-6' in width depending on its growing conditions. The needle-like foliage gives this plant a feathery appearance from a distance and is a feature that has made this juniper plant so popular.
  • JUNIPER BONSAI: Considered a very hardy conifer, the Juniper is a non-flowering tree that makes an excellent choice for bonsai because it is so easy to prune and train. Although not a popular choice by bonsai enthusiast with the proper technique it does just as well as many other junipers. This Juniper is not cut in bonsai form, but you can shape it into a bonsai tree.
  • MAINTENANCE: Caring for the Parsoni Juniper is easy, but it requires the right environment to promote growth. The tree does well with wiring as it will bend into styles easily. Try not to remove all growing tips simultaneously when pruning, as the leaves may turn brown and the whole plant may decline. Instead, trim dense foliage areas with small, sharp pruning shears.
  • USDA ZONES: Parsoni Juniper is hardy in zones 4-8 and once mature is quite tolerant to drought conditions. During this period, water plants every 2-4 days and then once per week. Juniper plants live and thrive in heat, humidity, drought, polluted/urban environments, and salty coastal environments.
  • Sunlight Exposure: Full Sun To Part Shade

Conditions and water needs differ by species and region. UC IPM describes junipers as doing best in full sun to partial shade and notes that coastal California plantings need little water, while inland plantings may need some summer irrigation. It also cautions against lawn sprinklers: UC IPM: Juniper pest management guidelines. Treat these as regional guidance rather than a universal watering schedule.

Plant with mature spread and airflow in mind

Space plants according to the cultivar’s expected spread. Horizontal junipers are often planted too close together; crowding can create dense foliage and restrict air movement. Adequate spacing also helps foliage dry after rain or dew and can reduce the conditions associated with fungal disease. Clemson Extension discusses spacing and cultivar dimensions in its juniper guide.

For a container-grown juniper, loosen a dense root mass gently by hand or with a knife, set the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, and water thoroughly after planting. UGA Extension’s general regional guidance recommends watering thoroughly at planting and at least twice weekly during the first month to support establishment. Adjust that frequency for rainfall, soil drainage, temperature, and local recommendations rather than following it as a fixed rule: UGA Extension: Junipers in the Landscape.

Juniper Blue Pacific - 30 Live Plants - Drought Tolerant Cold Hardy Evergreen Ground Cover
  • Wonderful, low spreading form makes a superb groundcover, group planting or single specimen. Dense blue-green foliage gives this selection a handsome appearance and is best when not pruned, but rather left in its natural form. A notably heat tolerant variety.
  • This popular, fast-growing evergreen maintains its dense, ocean blue-green foliage year-round. Its needles are dense and shorter than other junipers with a low-trailing growth habit spreading 2-3 feet (6 inches tall).
  • This easy-to-grow evergreen needs a regular water schedule to ensure the growth of a mature root system. After the mature root system is established, watering is needed occasionally, except during a drought, watering is needed regularly. Prune once or twice a year around the edges in order to keep the middle of the plant full.
  • Very hardy, and a very, very popular choice in landscapes across the country - might very well be the most widely used juniper for groundcover applications.
  • Best performs as groundcover, seashore planting, planter boxes, and draped over walls.

Water during establishment, then adjust

Newly planted junipers need regular watering while their roots establish. Water deeply enough to wet the root ball and surrounding soil, then let drainage and conditions guide the next watering. Do not keep the soil continuously wet: excess water can harm junipers, and poor drainage is a recurring concern in extension guidance.

After establishment, many junipers need little supplemental irrigation. Let rainfall, soil, exposure, cultivar, and regional climate determine whether to water. UC IPM’s California guidance distinguishes coastal from inland conditions, while UGA and Clemson provide broader establishment and landscape advice; none supports one watering calendar for all gardens.

Fertilize sparingly

Established junipers do not universally require supplemental fertilizer. Clemson Extension describes fertilization as generally minimal once plants are established. A fertilizer rate given for a regional publication should not be treated as a necessity for every garden; soil conditions and local guidance matter.

Prune selectively, not into bare wood

Junipers may not produce new growth from bare, old branches. UMass Extension warns that new growth will not sprout from branches left without needles. Avoid cutting healthy foliage back to large bare branches, since those areas may remain bare.

Thin selectively by removing a branch at its origin or cutting it back to a side branch that still has foliage. Knowing the cultivar’s natural shape can reduce the need for corrective pruning later. Formal hedge shearing is a special case: UMass suggests shearing in early spring and again in early summer, but that timing is not a universal schedule for every cultivar or climate.

Investigate browning before treating

Browning or dieback alone does not identify the cause. Junipers can be affected by water deficit or excess, drainage problems, pests, and diseases, and the likely issues vary by region and plant. UC IPM lists pests including aphids, bark beetles, scales, spider mites, sawflies, and miners, as well as twig blights, rusts, and root and crown rot. Clemson’s Southeast guide includes bagworms, twig borers, juniper scale, webworms, tip blights, and cedar-apple, quince, and hawthorn rusts.

  • Creates a dense, silver-blue carpet that beautifies landscapes year-round with minimal effort.
  • Perfectly suited for rock gardens, slopes, and borders, enhancing outdoor spaces with texture and color.
  • Exceptionally drought-tolerant, making it a top choice for eco-friendly and low-water garden designs.
  • Offers a robust ground cover solution, effectively minimizing erosion and suppressing weed growth.
  • Adaptable to a variety of conditions, including sunny and partially shaded areas, for versatile landscaping.

Start by checking the planting site and recent care: note whether soil stays wet, whether irrigation reaches the foliage, and whether the plant is crowded. Wet or poorly drained soil is associated with root rot in NC State’s juniper profiles: Japanese garden juniper profile and Pfitzer juniper profile. Penn State’s twig blight guidance highlights the value of airflow that lets foliage dry quickly after dew, rain, or sprinkler irrigation: Penn State Extension: Juniper twig blight.

If symptoms persist or spread, seek a reliable local diagnosis instead of assuming a particular pest or disease from browning alone. Local extension guidance is especially useful because disease and pest lists differ by place and species.
