Plant a ginkgo in full sun and well-drained soil, allow room for its mature size, and expect slow early growth. If you want to avoid the pungent fruit produced by female trees, choose a correctly identified named male cultivar rather than an unsexed seedling.
Choose a site with room for a large tree
Ginkgo is a long-lived landscape tree, not a compact shrub by default. Mature-size estimates vary by profile: the University of Florida IFAS gives a typical height of 50–75 feet and spread of 50–60 feet, while the Royal Horticultural Society lists a height above 12 metres and a spread of 4–8 metres. Treat these as estimates, not guarantees; local conditions and cultivar affect the eventual form.

Before planting, consider overhead wires, buildings, paths, and other trees. If space is limited, look for a named cultivar with a narrower or more compact habit, and confirm its expected size with a reputable local nursery.

Choose a sunny location with soil that drains well. Ginkgo tolerates a broad range of soil types, including urban and compacted soils, but adaptability does not mean it thrives with waterlogged roots. The RHS summarizes its growing conditions as: Grow in well-drained soil in full sun.
#1 Best Overall
- 1. Grow Your Own Ginkgo Tree – Includes 10 premium Ginkgo biloba seeds for planting. Also known as Maidenhair Tree, this long-living ornamental tree is valued for its unique fan-shaped leaves and beautiful golden fall color.
- 2. Heirloom Non-GMO Seeds – High-quality, non-GMO tree seeds suitable for home gardens, yards, landscaping projects, and bonsai growing. Great for gardeners who enjoy growing rare and unique trees from seed.
- 3. Cold Stratification Recommended – For best germination results, soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours, then cold stratify in moist sand or peat moss for 6–8 weeks before planting.
- 4. Adaptable and Easy to Grow – Ginkgo trees can thrive in full sun to partial shade and prefer loose, well-drained soil. Once established, they are drought tolerant and suitable for many climates.
- 5. Ideal for Outdoor Planting – Perfect for backyard gardens, landscape borders, park-style plantings, and tree collections. Mature trees provide shade, seasonal color, and an attractive natural appearance.
Keep the root zone adequately moist while the tree establishes, then adjust watering to rainfall, soil, and weather. There is no single schedule that fits every site. Avoid overwatering and poorly drained locations. UF/IFAS also recommends keeping turf several feet away from the trunk during establishment.
Plant carefully and allow time to establish
Ginkgo transplants readily, though young trees may establish slowly. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes it as a tree that “transplants readily, and is easy to establish.” That does not mean it will put on rapid growth immediately: UF/IFAS notes that some trees grow extremely slowly for several years after planting before growth picks up.

- Unique fan-shaped leaves that add a distinctive look to your landscape
- Beautiful golden-yellow foliage in the fall that creates a stunning visual display
- Tolerant of a wide range of soil types and urban conditions and known for its air-purifying qualities
- Long-lived tree that can thrive for decades with minimal care
- Symbol of strength and longevity, making it a meaningful addition to any garden
- Check the site: confirm there is room for the selected tree’s mature height and spread, and that water drains away rather than pooling.
- Plant according to the nursery’s directions: set the tree at the appropriate depth and backfill with the site soil. Water it in to settle the soil around the roots.
- Support establishment: provide moisture as needed without keeping the soil saturated, and keep turf several feet from the trunk.
Growth is generally slow, so do not judge the tree’s long-term health by a few years of modest top growth alone. Local conditions, transplant stress, and the individual tree all matter.
Select a cultivar for size, shape, and fruit
Ginkgo is dioecious: individual trees are male or female. Female trees produce seeds with fleshy outer coverings that drop in autumn and smell unpleasant. If that fruit and odor would be a problem near a walk, patio, or entrance, choose a named male cultivar and confirm the cultivar identity with the seller. A seed-grown tree may not reveal its sex until it fruits, which UF/IFAS says can take 20 years or more.

Prune lightly, especially while young
Ginkgo needs little routine pruning. While the tree is young, limited structural pruning can help establish one central leader and remove competing branches. Later, prune only when needed to remove dead, damaged, or poorly placed limbs. Virginia Cooperative Extension advises pruning in spring; avoid topping or heavy routine shaping. For a mature tree or a limb that could be hazardous, consult a qualified local arborist.

- This is one of the first trees to change colors in the autumn months. While other trees are still green, the Ginkgo transitions to a fluorescent yellow.
- The Ginkgo biloba is often call a "living fossil". Considered one of the oldest living types of trees. It is a very long lived tree.
- Its growth rate is considered slow to moderate. Trees are either male or female, with only females producing seed-bearing fruits. The trees are easy to propagate from seed.
- Ginkgo Biloba like to have plenty of water. It likes sun but will tolerate some shade. Pest and disease free, and ignored by deer.
- Place the seeds in the refrigerator to cold stratify for one to two months. When the stratification period is over, remove the seeds and lightly sand the seed coats—not too much, just enough to allow water to penetrate. Place them in a bowl of water and let sit for 24 hours. The next day,Plant the seeds very shallowly - just cover them with sand. Place the pots indoors in a light area but out of direct sunlight, and keep the soil moist but not wet.
Know the common problems and seed warning
Serious pest and disease problems are uncommon in the cited horticultural profiles. UF/IFAS reports no serious pests or diseases, while the RHS describes ginkgo as generally pest-free and notes rare susceptibility to honey fungus. These general descriptions are not a diagnosis if a particular tree is declining.

The RHS warns that ginkgo seeds are harmful if eaten and toxic to pets, and recommends protective equipment when handling them. Keep this warning specific to the seeds; the cited guidance does not establish that every part of the tree carries the same risk.
