Grow Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ in bright, indirect light, water thoroughly only after the soil has dried slightly, and keep it away from cold drafts and harsh afternoon sun. Adjust watering to the plant’s growth and the soil’s condition rather than following a fixed weekly schedule.
What Ficus Tineke needs
Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ is a variegated cultivar of the rubber plant, an ornamental evergreen commonly grown indoors in temperate climates. Its leaves are green with cream or pale-yellow areas. Most available care guidance is for Ficus elastica generally, rather than tested specifically on ‘Tineke’.
Indoor rubber plants are described as ranging from about 2 to 10 feet when trained or supported; North Carolina Extension also lists ‘Tineke’ as capable of reaching up to 13 feet. These are context-dependent size descriptions, not a prediction of how tall a houseplant will become. North Carolina Extension’s Ficus elastica profile provides these cultivar and plant details.
Where to place it: light and temperature
Choose a spot with bright, indirect light or partial shade. Protect the leaves from harsh afternoon sun, which can be too intense. Keep the plant in a stable location: rubber plants do not do well with drafts or cold temperatures, and frequent moves are not recommended by North Carolina Extension.

A Minnesota Master Gardener response gives a general range of at least 75–100 foot-candles and a preferred range of 200–500 foot-candles for Ficus elastica. Treat those figures as extension guidance, not as a cultivar-specific laboratory threshold. The same response notes that light availability varies by placement; a consistently bright spot out of direct afternoon sun is a practical starting point. The Ask Extension response was published October 18, 2020.
North Carolina Extension gives a temperature greater than 55°F for outdoor cultural conditions. That figure should not be treated as a tested universal indoor minimum for every home or for ‘Tineke’; the useful indoor precaution is to avoid cold exposure and drafts.

How to water without keeping the soil wet
Water deeply, then allow the soil to dry slightly before watering again. The goal is soil that is neither persistently wet nor left completely dry for long periods. Let excess water drain away, and never leave the pot standing in water. Use the soil’s condition and the plant’s growth to decide when to water instead of relying on a calendar interval.
- During spring and summer: Check the soil regularly and water when it has dried slightly, accounting for how quickly the pot dries in its particular location.
- During fall and late winter: Reduce watering as growth slows or the plant is dormant. Indoor conditions still matter, so check the soil rather than stopping watering on a fixed date.
- After watering: Empty any water collected in the saucer or outer pot so the roots are not left sitting in it.
North Carolina Extension describes Ficus elastica as tolerant of dry soil but also warns against overwatering. Minnesota Master Gardeners similarly advise deep, infrequent watering and less frequent watering in winter than in spring and summer. These are compatible: avoid both persistently wet soil and prolonged, severe dryness.

Why leaves may yellow or fall
Some older, lower leaves turning yellow and dropping is described as normal. More widespread leaf loss can be associated with overwatering, a temperature drop, or cold drafts, according to North Carolina Extension. A single dropped leaf does not establish the cause.
Check the growing conditions together before changing care: feel the soil, confirm that water can drain, consider recent cold exposure or drafts, and inspect the leaves and stems for pests. Brown edges, spots, or leaf drop cannot be reliably diagnosed from appearance alone using the available cultivar-specific guidance.

Routine maintenance, pruning, and pests
Wipe dust from the leaves with a damp, soft cloth or sponge. This keeps the foliage clean without needing a specialized product.
Pruning changes the plant’s shape. Pruning main branches can encourage a bushier habit; leaving them unpruned tends to produce a taller, narrower, tree-like form. Cuts can release sap, so protect the surrounding surface and handle pruned material carefully.

Inspect for mealybugs, scale, and spider mites, which North Carolina Extension lists as potential pests. If the plant is losing leaves, include pest inspection alongside checks for wet soil, poor drainage, cold, and drafts rather than assuming one cause.
Can you propagate Ficus Tineke?
North Carolina Extension lists layering and root cutting as propagation strategies for Ficus elastica. Its profile does not give a step-by-step method specific to ‘Tineke’, so those options should be understood as general rubber-plant guidance rather than a verified cultivar-specific protocol.
Is Ficus Tineke safe around pets?
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control page is a general plant database, but its available page text does not establish a plant-specific toxicity classification or symptoms for Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’. If a pet may have eaten any plant and you are concerned, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control using the ASPCA Rubber Plant page for its general guidance.
