For most indoor dracaena, aim for bright, indirect light, let the soil surface dry before watering, and use a pot with drainage. The details depend on the species: corn plant (Dracaena fragrans) and dragon tree (D. reflexa var. angustifolia) differ in leaf shape, growth habit, and response to light and water.
Which dracaena do you have?
“Dracaena” names a genus, not one uniform houseplant. Two common indoor types are the cane-form corn plant, Dracaena fragrans, and the narrow-leaved dragon tree, D. reflexa var. angustifolia. Cultivars also vary in foliage color and light response.

North Carolina State Extension describes indoor dracaenas broadly as ranging from about 2 to 10 feet tall, depending on the plant and growing conditions; that range is not a prediction for an individual specimen. A corn plant may form tall canes, while a dragon tree has a more shrub-like branching shape. Choose care based on the plant’s conditions and growth rather than assuming every dracaena has the same needs.

Bright, indirect light is a reliable target for many common indoor dracaenas. North Carolina State Extension recommends bright to moderate filtered light for D. fragrans; UC IPM says dracaenas generally prefer bright indirect light but can tolerate lower light. In dimmer conditions, growth may slow and foliage may become less robust or lose some color.

Avoid moving a plant abruptly from a dim spot into strong direct sun, which can scorch leaves. If you want to increase its light, do so gradually. Keep it away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
How often should I water my dracaena?
Water when the soil surface has dried rather than on a fixed weekly schedule. North Carolina State Extension offers the top inch of soil as a practical guide; Clemson Extension advises waiting until the surface feels dry to the touch. When it is time, water thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Do not leave the pot standing in water.
How quickly the mix dries depends on light, temperature, pot size, and growing medium. Check the soil before watering, and expect to water less often when growth and water use slow in winter. A pot with drainage holes helps prevent water from collecting around the roots.

What soil, pot, and temperature does dracaena need?
Potting mix and repotting
For common indoor D. fragrans, a standard commercial houseplant mix in a pot with drainage holes is suitable. More generally, use a mix that holds some moisture but drains and aerates well. Clemson Extension flags dracaena’s fluoride sensitivity and advises against soils with a high proportion of perlite.
Repot when roots emerge from the drainage holes or the plant begins lifting out of its pot. UF/IFAS lists a pH of 6.0–6.5 in commercial production guidance; home growers do not need to measure pH to follow the basic care routine.
Temperature and humidity
Normal warm household conditions suit indoor dracaenas. Recommendations vary by setting and species: Clemson Extension gives daytime temperatures of 60–70°F and nights about 10°F cooler, while North Carolina State Extension says D. fragrans grows best at 70–80°F and advises keeping it above 50°F if possible. These are not one precise optimum for every dracaena. Avoid chilling, drafts, and sudden temperature swings.

Low indoor humidity is one reported cause of brown tips on corn plants, so a humidifier may help in a dry heated room. Brown tips have other possible causes too; misting is not a universal fix.

Fertilizing
During active growth, use a houseplant fertilizer according to its label. Reduce or pause feeding when growth slows. Too much fertilizer can burn leaf tips and margins, according to Clemson Extension. UF/IFAS gives fertilizer guidance for commercial production and interiorscape work; those rates should not be treated as household instructions.
Pruning and propagation
If a stem becomes long and bare, Clemson Extension recommends cutting it at the height you want; new leaves can appear. Tip or stem cuttings are practical ways to propagate dracaena. Air layering and cane cuttings are also used, particularly with larger plants or in commercial production.

Why are my dracaena leaves turning brown or yellow?
Brown or yellow tips and margins can have several causes, so check the plant’s conditions rather than treating the color alone. Start with water quality: North Carolina State Extension reports sensitivity to salts, chlorine, and fluoride, and Clemson Extension specifically describes fluoride injury. Also consider fertilizer buildup, low humidity—especially for D. fragrans—and whether watering and drainage are appropriate. Filtered or rain water may help when water quality is contributing, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Change one factor at a time where possible.
Sunken or dry patches may follow excessive sun exposure. Move the plant out of harsh direct light and trim damaged tissue if you wish; trimming is optional and will not reverse damage already present.

Clemson Extension lists temperature changes, drafts, excess water, poor drainage, and heavy insect infestations among possible causes of sudden leaf loss. Inspect the plant and its growing conditions before settling on one explanation.

How do I check for pests?
UC IPM lists mealybugs, spider mites, thrips, and scale among pests associated with dracaena. Inspect stems and the undersides of leaves, identify the pest, and then choose a treatment suited to it.
Is dracaena toxic to cats or dogs?
North Carolina State Extension classifies dracaena as toxic if cats or dogs ingest it, while describing the poison characteristics as low severity. Keep the plant and fallen leaves out of reach of pets that chew foliage. If you suspect a pet has eaten it, contact a veterinarian or an animal poison-control service.
